Gauteng policeman arrested for attempted murder of girlfriend after allegedly setting her house alight

A Gauteng policeman has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his girlfriend by setting her house alight at Lyden village in Polokwane, Limpopo, on Thursday. Police arrested the 46-year-old sergeant attached to Olievenhoutbosch police station on Friday. A preliminary report suggests he arrived at his girlfriend's house at about 2.30am and became angry when she didn't respond to him knocking on the door. He is then alleged to have set fire to the curtains, which resulted in the two-roomed tin house burning down. She was injured in the fire but was rescued by her neighbours, who summoned the police and an ambulance. The policeman was traced and will appear in the Mahwelereng magistrate's court on Monday. Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe commended the rapid response. TimesLIVE

Two dead in foiled cash-in-transit heist shootout

Police in the country have arrested three suspects and fatally wounded two others in two separate incidents, following their alleged involvement in cash-in-transit (CIT) heists. Two suspects were killed during a shootout after foiling a CIT heist in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, 3 July. A multi-disciplinary intelligence-led operation led to the arrests of two other men for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and attempted murder. Investigations revealed that one of the arrested men is a former employee of a private security company. Police received intelligence about a planned heist and deployed officers to monitor and patrol the area. They spotted a Mercedes-Benz vehicle with four occupants and tactically approached it. However, as the police officers approached the vehicle, they came under fire from the suspects. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition from the scene. In a separate incident in Limpopo on Tuesday, 2 July, one suspect was arrested, and a getaway vehicle was recovered. This followed a brazen cash-in-transit robbery attempt. Three armed suspects allegedly approached a cash-in-transit vehicle collecting money from a hardware store. The suspects, wielding pistols, confronted security personnel at gunpoint and disarmed a guard who was carrying a cash case. As a result, a shootout ensued between the suspects and security guards. The suspects then fled the scene. CASH-IN-TRANSIT SUSPECTS REMAIN AT LARGE Police warned that three suspects remain at large and consider them armed and extremely dangerous. They believe the suspects fled in a white Volkswagen Golf 6 with Gauteng registration plates. 'The swift response by our integrated law enforcement teams demonstrates our commitment to combating violent crime and protecting our communities. We will not rest until all perpetrators are brought to justice,' said Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe Police urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution if they encounter the suspects. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS App. IS ENOUGH BEING DONE TO TACKLE ORGANISED CRIME IN SOUTH AFRICA? Alleged repeat offender caught smuggling stolen car at Beitbridge

A coordinated anti-smuggling operation in Limpopo resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man and the recovery of a stolen white Toyota Corolla Cross valued at R400,000. The suspect was allegedly attempting to smuggle the vehicle across the Beitbridge Port of Entry. On 23 June 2025, the Provincial Tracking Team and partner law enforcement agencies acted on intelligence that a stolen car from Gauteng was en route to the border. Eventually, surveillance units located the vehicle on the R521 near Vivo in the Mara policing area and intercepted it. Investigators confirmed that someone reported the Toyota Corolla stolen over the weekend from the Brooklyn policing area in Pretoria. Officers arrested the suspect at the scene. Police revealed that they arrested the same suspect in April 2024 for smuggling a stolen Toyota Hilux GD6 to Musina. The Polokwane Magistrate's Court had released him on bail, and the Polokwane Regional Court scheduled his next appearance for 28 July 2025. However, the Senwabarwana Magistrate's Court will hear his case on 25 June 2025. He will face a charge of possessing a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Authorities expect to revoke his existing bail after he allegedly committed the same offence again, violating his bail conditions. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the operation's success, further highlighting the value of inter-agency collaboration in disrupting cross-border vehicle smuggling. Village residents living in fear of criminals

Violent crime has gripped Malamulele, where residents fear for their lives as armed criminals continue to terrorise homes and families. Residents of Malamulele near Giyani in Limpopo are living in fear of gun-wielding criminals who attack them in their homes. Recently, community members protested and accused the police of not doing enough to arrest the criminals, who recently shot and killed a 20-year-old young man and raped his 17-year-old sister in Malamulele Extension B. They fled the scene with stolen property including a cellphone, laptop, chainsaw, TV, bicycle and grinder collectively valued at R36 300. Many more housebreakings in Malamulele Authorities said there were many more housebreaking cases reported in the area. Yesterday, Limpopo police provincial commissioner LieutenantGeneral Thembi Hadebe, together with transport and community safety MEC Violet Mathye, visited the area to assess the progress made so far in the fight against crime. 'Crime-related incidents prompted the deployment of multidisciplinary forces in the area to stabilise the situation. The area has experienced a spate of violent crime, including house robberies and other violent incidents in which several homes were targeted,' Hadebe said. 'We have deployed more officers in Malamulele after realising that crime is on the rise. We have relaunched the Community Policing Forum (CPF) at some of the crime hotspots to make sure that they assist in the fight against crime. 'We are appealing to the community members to join the police as reservists and to be part of the CPF,' he said. Residents under siege Hadebe said the police were doing well to address the situation at Malamulele and neighbouring villages. Several residents who spoke to The Citizen confirmed that they were under siege and they were even afraid to go out on the street at night. 'Things are out of hand here, the crime rate in our area is too high and we are being attacked every day by armed criminals,' said a resident who asked not to be named. Rampant crime started when police started fighting illegal mining He alleges that most of the criminal activities are committed by foreign nationals and the locals who were involved in illegal mining. 'Since the police interrupted their illegal mining projects, they started to commit crime and terrorise the community members.' Another resident, a single mother, said it was hard for them because every night she feared that they might be attacked by criminals.
