Per capita income in Tamil Nadu has surpassed the national average and even registered a two-fold growth than what was witnessed during the AIADMK rule in the state, Chief Minister M K Stalin claimed on Wednesday. "Another achievement in the long list is Tamil Nadu has secured the second place among the states with a per capita income of Rs 1,96,309. This achievement reflects the success of the Dravidian model's visionary plans, industrial development, efforts to attract investments and public welfare schemes," Thennarasu said on 'X'. In the last year of the last (AIADMK) regime, 2020-21, the per capita income of Tamil Nadu was only Rs 1.43 lakh. Under the DMK rule, the per capita income increased to Rs 1.96 lakh in 2024-25, with an average growth of 8.15 per cent in the last four years as against only 4.42 per cent growth from 2016-17 to 2020-21 of the previous regime. Such a high average growth rate is a testament to the successful Dravidian Model of governance. On the national front, the national average per capita income in 2024-25 was only 1.14 lakh. The national average growth rate for the last decade from 2014-15 to 2024-25 was only 57 per cent. "But, to everyone's surprise, the growth rate achieved by Tamil Nadu is 83.3 per cent. This was possible because of the government of the Chief Minister Stalin, focused on economic progress, focusing on the welfare of the people," the Finance Minister stated. He called for measures to sustain "the same enthusiasm," and move even faster towards a one trillion US dollar economy under the present leadership.

Epigraphy museum to come up in Madurai
Madurai: Finance minister Thangam Thennarasu on Sunday said that a dedicated museum focusing on epigraphy and inscriptions will be set up at the World Tamil Sangam in Madurai. This was revealed to The Times of India on the sidelines of a two-day conference organised by Archaeological Society in Madurai. Addressing archaeologists and scholars at the conference, Thennarasu stressed the need to accord equal importance to the study of inscriptions and coins alongside archaeological excavations. "We often speak about excavations, but inscriptions carry the voice of history. Epigraphy must receive the same attention," he said. Thennarasu also announced that a national conference on epigraphy and inscriptions will be organised in Tamil Nadu in Jan 2026. "The govt has sanctioned ₹30 lakh for the event," he said. Asked about the open-air museum being developed at Keeladi, he said the ₹18 crore project is nearing completion and would be inaugurated before year-end or in early Jan. He said the state govt recently raised the excavation budget from ₹5 crore to ₹7 crore following discussions in the Assembly. He added that thematic museums are being planned at heritage sites like Thirumalai Nayak Palace in Madurai to provide immersive experiences to visitors. Thennarasu assured activists and members of the public from Pudukottai who met him that a proposal to set up a museum at Porpanaikkottai, where important archaeological findings from the Sangam era have been unearthed since 2021, will be seriously considered. "The demand for establishing a museum there is completely valid and will definitely be taken into consideration," he said. Excavations at the site have revealed culturally significant findings, drawing parallels with sites like Keeladi. However, the second phase of excavation has now concluded and the pits have been closed. The minister released a commemorative book titled Thisaiyayiram, honouring veteran epigraphy scholar S Rajagopal at the event. Archaeologist and secretary of 'Pandiya Naatu Varalatru Aiyvu Mayam' C Santhalingam, and state archaeology department assistant director V P Yathees Kumar were also present.

Tamil Nadu Government to conduct national conference on epigraphy: Minister Thangam Thennarasu
'A national conference on epigraphy and inscriptions is soon to be conducted in Tamil Nadu,' said Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu. Releasing a book 'Thisaiyayiram,' on epigraphy scholar S. Rajagopal during an event conducted by Archaeological Society in Madurai on Saturday (July 19, 2025), Mr. Thennarasu said that following several discussions in Legislative Assembly the fund allocated for excavation was raised from ₹5 crore to ₹7 crore. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu urges RBI to withdraw new restrictions on gold loans 'In addition to archaeology, the State Government was also keen on focussing on inscriptions and museums,' he added. 'A revival of the interest in archaeology in recent years could be attributed to the inception of museums and excavations sites,' he said. 'Moreover, in the last 10 to 15 years period, youngsters' interest in archaeology, excavations and its related subjects, has increased multifold, thanks to social media platforms and various forums,' he noted. Centre's desire is to treat Tamils as secondary citizens, says Thangam Thennarasu Mr. Thennarasu stated that the forums taking up the complex, technical subjects of history to the public in laymen's subject was an important development in the field. He pitched the government's idea of coming up with thematic museums in places such as Thirumalai Nayak Palace to provide the public with a holistic experience of the inscriptions and its history. T.N. people will teach BJP-led Centre a lesson over Keeladi, says Thennarasu
Contending that the Union government seeking the opinion of a retired archaeologist over the Keeladi excavation had 'exposed its true intent', Tamil Nadu Minister Thangam Thennarasu urged the Centre to revise its position failing which the people of the State were prepared to teach a lesson in the upcoming Assembly election. In a social media post, Mr. Thennarasu (also holding the archaeology portfolio) charged that the retired archaeologist from whom the Union government had sought opinion had in fact made contentions that were 'far from truth' over the third round of excavations. Insisting the Union government to change its stance over the issue, the Minister further cautioned: 'If not, the people of Tamil Nadu are waiting to teach appropriate lesson through the upcoming Assembly election.' Mr. Thennarasu also condemned the ruling BJP at the centre for its alleged 'unjustified anti-Tamil stand'. In Keeladi issue, the Chief Minister had exposed the Union government's actions attempting to diminish the antiquity of Tamils, the Minister said.

Tamil Nadu government urges Centre to release Keeladi excavation report
In the light of fresh research findings by a university in England on Keeladi archaeological site, the Tamil Nadu government, on Sunday (June 29, 2025) said the study highlighted the antiquity of the Tamil culture. It urged the Union government to release the report of the archaeological excavations conducted in Keeladi by the Archaeological Survey of India. Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu (who holds the archaeology portfolio) said he was filled with great pride and happiness over the research conducted by Liverpool John Moores University in England. It studied the skulls excavated from Keeladi and reconstructed the facial features of ancient people who lived around 2,500 years ago, 'once again highlighting the antiquity of Tamil culture and civilization to the world,' the Minister said. 'Though the Union BJP government has deceitfully tried to suppress the history and heritage of Tamils, constructive scientific findings and the historical evidence emerging from the Keeladi excavations continue to defeat the Union government's unjust and denials. I urge the Union government to at least now release the Keezhadi research report,' Mr. Thennarasu said. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin too took to the social media to say: 'The way of life detailed in Sangam literature now stands scientifically validated through the findings at Keeladi.'
