Tamil Nadu government urges Centre to release Keeladi excavation report
In the light of fresh research findings by a university in England on Keeladi archaeological site, the Tamil Nadu government, on Sunday (June 29, 2025) said the study highlighted the antiquity of the Tamil culture. It urged the Union government to release the report of the archaeological excavations conducted in Keeladi by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu (who holds the archaeology portfolio) said he was filled with great pride and happiness over the research conducted by Liverpool John Moores University in England. It studied the skulls excavated from Keeladi and reconstructed the facial features of ancient people who lived around 2,500 years ago, 'once again highlighting the antiquity of Tamil culture and civilization to the world,' the Minister said.
'Though the Union BJP government has deceitfully tried to suppress the history and heritage of Tamils, constructive scientific findings and the historical evidence emerging from the Keeladi excavations continue to defeat the Union government's unjust and denials. I urge the Union government to at least now release the Keezhadi research report,' Mr. Thennarasu said.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin too took to the social media to say: 'The way of life detailed in Sangam literature now stands scientifically validated through the findings at Keeladi.'

First phase of census to begin in April 2026
The Centre has asked states and Union territories to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of administrative units before December 31 this year, when they will be considered final for the census exercise, first phase of which will begin on April 1, 2026. A census official collects information from a household in Guwahati in 2011.(File/AP) In a letter dated June 27 to all states and UTs, registrar general and census commissioner of India Mritunjay Kumar Narayan said that for the census, all villages and towns are divided into uniform enumeration blocks and for each block, an enumerator is assigned to avoid any miss or repetition during the population count. 'From April 1, 2026, the Houselisting Operation, the appointment of supervisors and enumerators and the work division among them will be done, and on February 1, 2027, the Census of the population will begin,' Narayan said in his letter to chief secretaries of all states and UTs. 'It is important that once enumeration blocks are finalised, boundaries of administrative units are not changed.' The registrar general further asked the chief secretaries to direct all departments 'to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of municipal corporations, revenue villages, tehsils, sub-divisions or districts before December 31'. 'The states/UTs should ensure that no changes should be made in the boundaries of administrative units between January 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027, during which Census exercise will take place. Any changes in the existing boundaries must be intimated to Census directorates in the states and UTs and Registrar General of India by December 31, 2025. For Census 2027, boundaries of administrative units will be frozen on December 31, 2025,' the letter added. To ensure a fair workload for enumerators, an administrative unit is divided into manageable sections for the census called 'blocks'. A block is a clearly defined area within a village or town on a notional map for census purposes. These are termed houselisting blocks (HLBs) during houselisting operations and enumeration blocks (EBs) during population enumeration and serve as the smallest administrative units for the census. According to the letter, the houselisting operations for the census will begin from April 1, 2026, marking the start of the first phase of the decadal exercise. 'Before that, the appointment of supervisors, enumerators and work distribution among them shall be done with cooperation from states and district administration,' the letter said. Earlier this month, the office of registrar general of India (ORGI) in a notification announced that the 16th census, which will also include caste enumeration, will be carried out after a gap of 16 years in 2027, with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country. The much-delayed census will be completed by March 1, 2027. Officials have said that while data collection would be over by March 1, 2027, the entire exercise to collate the data and publish it will take two to three more years. On preparatory activities already done, officials said all states have already constituted census coordination committees (CCCs) under the respective chief secretaries. 'As the Census exercise was originally to take place in 2020, ORGI had already written to states/UTs for forming CCCs in April 2019,' an official said, adding the committees have various departments such as revenue, local administration, municipal corporations, rural development and panchayats, planning education, etc for conducting and monitoring different phases of census. The pre-test for census — which is conducted prior to each census encompassing all facets to check feasibility of all questions, methodologies, logistics arrangements, processing of data, etc — was also done in 2019. The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has said that the 16th census will see involvement of about 3.4 million enumerators and supervisors. Besides, around 130,000 census functionaries would be deployed for the exercise. The ministry further said that the upcoming census 'will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications' and 'provision of self-enumeration would also be made available to the people'. The census will be conducted in two phases. In phase one or houselisting operation, housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. Subsequently, in the second phase or population enumeration, the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected.

Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the Maharashtra govt under him took the historic decision of setting up three national law universities (NLUs)—at Mumbai, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—to settle the debate over its location nearly a decade ago. He pointed out that no state in the country has such an arrangement, Fadnavis highlighted the role played by then CJI Sharad Bobde as well as CJI Bhushan Gavai, then with the Nagpur bench of Bombay HC, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and himself in chalking out a plan for bringing Maharashtra NLU to Nagpur. Statistics Day celebrated to commemorate birth anniversary of Prof PC Mahalanobis
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): In recognition of the remarkable contributions made by Professor (Late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis to the field of statistics and economic planning, the Government has designated his birth day, June 29, as Statistics Day. The primary objective of celebrating this Day is to raise public awareness, particularly among the younger generation, about the pivotal role of statistics in policy formulation for national development, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation said in a release on Sunday. As per the release, the celebration for the 19th Statistics Day was held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi on Sunday. The theme for 19th Statistics Day was '75 Years of National Sample Survey', highlighting the enduring legacy and impact of the National Sample Survey in strengthening the statistical system of the country. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Rao Inderjit Singh, the Chief Guest of the event, in his address, paid tribute to Prof Mahalanobis and highlighted the significance of the dual milestone; the celebration of Statistics Day and the 75th year of the National Sample Survey (NSS). He spoke about the transformation of the statistical system through the use of technological tools for real-time data monitoring. He emphasised the need for methodological reforms such as updated sampling techniques, integrated survey frameworks, and harmonisation with international standards. He expressed the commitment of the ministry for inclusive engagement through consultations and capacity-building initiatives with State Governments. Union Minister lauded MoSPI's transparent and inclusive approach and urged the statistical community to support the national vision of a transparent and ever-improving National Statistical Office. He concluded by appreciating the dedication of statisticians and field functionaries of the ministry, as per the release. Delivering the welcome address, Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI, reflected on the NSS's remarkable journey and its evolution into one of the world's most robust and trusted statistical systems. Dr Garg highlighted the various reforms undertaken during this journey, which started in 1950. Time reduction in publication of survey results and availability of data at more granular level with higher frequency, digital transformation undertaken in various work sphere from data collection through CAPI to its Dissemination through eSankhyiki portal having more than 135 million records, a dedicated data visualisation section on the website for demystifying the complex data, mainstreaming of alternative data sources including administrative statistics in the official statistics system were some of the reform initiatives. Dr. Garg emphasised in his welcome speech. He also mentioned that MoSPI's focus on data dissemination through technology has changed the paradigm of data-driven policymaking en route to Viksit Bharat. Dr Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, Chairman of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), in his address, mentioned the history of the Indian Statistical system and the valued contributions of Dr PC Mahalanobis to its development. He congratulated MoSPI for their efforts in modernising the Statistical system and thereby supporting data and evidence-based policy making. He underscored that statistical agencies can greatly contribute to other areas of governance, such as creating a uniform methodology for normalising scores in various online competitive exams and validating online voting. Such an initiative will create public trust in the government and will facilitate smooth governance. Approximately 700 participants, including Senior officers from central ministries and Departments, State and UT Governments, representatives from international organisations such as UN agencies, and other key stakeholders, attended the event.
