Thom Browne Opens New Doors on NYC's Upper East Side
Thom Browneis staking a larger claim on New York City's Upper East Side. Just a short walk away from its 72nd Street flagship, the American designer (and chairman of the Council for Fashion Designers of America) has just cut the ribbon on an all-new store dedicated exclusively to his leather goods and footwear. Located at 898 Madison Avenue, the shop is designed to be a 'focused, intimate space' highlighting the label's best accessories, including, of course, the Hector Bag and all its animalistic successors. Alongside bags shaped like bunnies, whales, and pigs, the store's shelves are stocked with Thom Browne's signature classic baguette bags, which come in pebble grain leather, navy tweed, and pearl-studded iterations. Elsewhere, Mr. and Mrs. Thom Bags sit firmly next to footwear, like the imrpint's heritage trainers, signature brogues, and wingtip heels, as 'objets d'arts in this jewel-box gallery.' Leave it to Hector to draw a crowd. Thom Browne's dachshund was rendered in a bright green topiary stationed on 72nd Street, drawing the curiosity of casual passersby. The troupe of people dressed in coordinating seersucker was another clear sign that something was afoot on the Upper East Side block on Wednesday: the opening of two new Thom Browne boutiques, including a store dedicated to accessories, on Madison Avenue. Guests included recent Emmy nominees Walton Goggins and Tramell Tillman, who both attended the Met Gala with Thom Browne in May, and Cristin Milioti; Christine Baranski and her 'The Gilded Age' costar Louisa Jacobson; 'Materialists' director Celine Song, and Jack Innanen. 'I love everyone's red accents,' said Ella Emhoff, a red handbag slung on her arm, as she took stock of the sartorial theme throughout the room. Everyone, naturally, was dressed in their Thom Browne best, including the man himself. ' It's nice to finally be in the neighborhood,' said Browne, holding court throughout the evening. 'It's an idea I've had for a long time. I live around here, so it's just nice to get this store together.' Coups of Champagne and trays of ice cream — served in Thom Browne-branded cups — were eagerly accepted as guests made their way around the intimate boutique. Goggins, dressed in a blue and white seersucker suit, paused to browse a rack of clothing upon arrival. The 'The White Lotus' star had an icy glass of lemonade in hand. ' I'm not used to carrying a bag,' said Tillman, navigating the top handle accessory that accompanied his Thom Browne pleated skirt and cashmere mesh basketball jersey, layered over a white button-down, as he posed for photos. The actor is firmly Team Thom after attending his first Met Gala with the designer in May. ' It's very clean, very simple but also elegant — it has a statement, which I truly appreciate,' said Tillman of the designer's approach. On Tuesday, the 'Severance' actor received his first Emmy nomination, for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series. ' It's a dream come true and 100 percent honor to be amongst all the nominees,' said Tillman. 'And 27 nominations for 'Severance' — it's absolutely incredible.' ' It's been very lovely 24 hours,' said Milioti, who also received her first Emmy nomination this week, for her lead role in 'The Penguin.' 'I'm blown away by the amount of nominations we got. And then also 'Black Mirror' got a bunch of nominations — it's been really great.' The rest of the summer holds 'a little bit of work, a little bit of play' for the actress, and then it's back to Los Angeles for the lead-up to the Emmy Awards in September. The actress, dressed in a long tailored gray dress, had a front-row seat at Browne's runway show in New York earlier this year. ' It was like witnessing art — walking, breathing art,' she said. 'You feel so fabulous in his clothing. It's so structured and timeless and classic, while being its own creature.' Tyriq Withers Celebrates 27th Birthday With Premiere of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer'
Tyriq Withers' 27th birthday got off to quite the special start. The night before, the rising actor attended his very first premiere, for his movie 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' Prior to walking the red carpet, in a full Thom Browne look styled by Jason Bolden, his team presented him with a cake. A few hours later, he was seated beside his mother and nephew in the theater, taking in the screening. 'Last night was a movie, no pun intended,' he says the following day, on his actual birthday. 'It was electric from doing press in the morning to going to the hotel and then meeting all my team there and getting ready for my first premiere — it was a dream come true. I had anxiety about the night because I just wanted it to last forever. I wish I could bottle that feeling up and then when you feel down, you get to pour it out a little bit and feel that feeling again.' It may be his first premiere but he'll be back on the circuit shortly: this fall he stars in 'Him,' the Jordan Peele-produced sports horror film, one of the year's most anticipated new titles. Safe to say, Withers has to get used to seeing himself on screen more. 'I was sweating the entire time,' he says of watching 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' next to his family. 'Anytime I knew my face was about to pop up, I started tensing. It's funny that I make movies and the only real opinion that matters is my 7-year-old nephew. So I'm walking out of the theater and I was like, 'did you like it? Really? Are you lying to me?'' For the big night, Withers and Bolden opted for a Thom Browne kilt over trousers, paired with a knit vest. 'I think it's such an eclectic look that pushes specific boundaries that I'm passionate about, because I think growing up there's this idea of what it means to be masculine. And I think I've been teetering that line my entire life,' Withers says. 'I think masculinity is being bold enough to do exactly what you want to do, being so confident in who you are as a person and how you want to express yourself. I think that's the most masculine thing one can do. It's not tied to any specific gender. I just love this look with the iconic gray skirt on the outside of the pants and the checkered vest piece.' With his first two big projects, Withers, who played football at Florida State before becoming an actor, is set to become a new star of the horror genre. 'I grew up struggling to watch them — you know how that is,' he says. 'I think one of my scariest films ever is 'Jeepers Creepers,' and to this day, I can't really wash my hair or shampoo with my eyes shut. You got to keep those eyes open. So yeah, I'm a big fan because it's just so much to play with. There's a community that you can enjoy the movie with theatrically, and then I think it's just an escapism for everyday life to really tap into a film and just enjoy it.'
