50 new homes set to come on stream in Tipperary

The July meeting of the Thurles Municipal District heard that 50 homes at Glencarrick, Roscrea had recently been completed, and were due to go on the council's Choice Based Lettings (CBL) system shortly. Choice Based Letting is a system used by Tipperary County Council so those who are on the social housing list and have been approved for homes can express their interest in houses when they become available. Independent Roscrea councillor Shane Lee welcomed the expected delivery of the new homes, saying that it was good news for people who are approved for social housing in Roscrea. "It's good news for Roscrea in terms of the development that's taking place with an Approved Housing Body, within the next 24 hours, we're going to see 50 new houses for young families and old families, and every type of a family that's available and qualified for housing from Tipperary County Council,' Cllr Lee said. "It's amazing to think that, in the town of Roscrea, a disadvantaged area, we see so much good work going on in terms of housing. Cllr Lee emphasised that the development, led by an Approved Housing Body, would provide urgently needed accommodation for a wide range of families. "Thankfully in Roscrea, it's a good news story that we're going to have at least 50 new houses coming on stream on CBL, and that's hugely important for those people,' Cllr Lee added.

Almost €1million in funding for Tipperary tourism projects

Today at 02:30 Four Tipperary projects have been awarded almost €1million to develop tourism accommodation in the county. Under Scheme B of the EU's Just Transition Fund, the Tipperary projects have been awarded a share of €970,000 to develop accommodation for tourism across the Premier County. The figures were revealed to councillors as part of an update from Tipperary County Council's tourism section at the June meeting of the Thurles Municipal District. Noan Country House in Thurles has been awarded €248,000 in funding from the scheme to enable them to develop visitor accommodation. Both Forest Lane Lodges in Thurles and Ely Haven in Templemore have been awarded €300,000 each, the highest single funding amounts for any Tipperary applicant in this round. Cloncannon Biofarm in Roscrea has been awarded €122,000 under the scheme, which will be used to develop a visitor centre at the farm. The €248,000 for Noan Country House will be used to transform a stable block in the estate's yard into two two-storey self-catering lodges. The €300,000 allocation for Forest Lane Lodges will be used for the development of three two-bedroom family lodges, while the €300,000 allocation for Ely Haven will also be used to develop pods for visitor accommodation, councillors were informed at the meeting.

Joint venture for Tipperary tourism project would be a ‘game-changer'

The call was made at the June meeting of the Thurles Municipal District by councillor Jim Ryan, who highlighted that the initiative had been unsuccessful in accessing funding under the latest round of the Community Recognition Fund, as well as other funding sources previously. Thurles Tourism Office had submitted an application for the latest round of the scheme for their tourism bus for the town, which would see visitors to the area picked up at the train station and driven around to see the sights in the area, such as Holycross Abbey, the Rock of Cashel, and Cormackstown Museum before being dropped back to their accommodation in the county or to the train station so they can continue their journey. Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Ryan said that the idea behind the scheme is aiming to make tourism in Tipperary easier to access. "The thinking behind it is to make it easier for people to come to Thurles, just get the train, they will be transported around various local tourist attractions and brought back to their accommodation and back to the train station,' he outlined. "In my opinion it's a no-brainer, it would be a game-changer regarding local tourism if they were successful in getting funding for it,' the independent councillor added. Questioning where the Thurles Tourist Office go from here with regards to accessing funding, the local councillor outlined that the project had been turned down under various funding streams in the past. "Could it be some sort of link up with yourselves [Tipperary County Council] and the Tourist Office in Thurles regarding that project because something that I believe strongly is tourism and if there's something there to help it, and bring tourism to the Thurles area I think we should be supporting it. "It's very disappointing for them that year after year they keep applying for various funding streams and they keep getting turned down,' he added. 'Could there be a joint partnership between the Thurles Tourism Office and the tourism section of the county council, maybe they come up with funding and the county council come up and match the funding, at this stage they've really gone for every single stream of funding,' Cllr Ryan said. Councillors were informed at the meeting that the matter would come down to tourism budgets, which are set out in advance, but that members from the tourism section would talk to the head of the section to review the budget to see if there's any scope to get the scheme up and running for 2026.
