'I offered to be Terence Crawford's back-up for Canelo fight - but got laughed off'

A former world champion has revealed he offered to be a back-up opponent for Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford - but was brutally laughed off Former boxing world champion Keith Thurman volunteered to step in should either Canelo Alvarez or Terence Crawford withdraw from their upcoming clash - but was brutally laughed off. ‌ The two pound-for-pound legends are scheduled to meet in a historic dust-up in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 13. Working alongside Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh and Sela, UFC president Dana White is poised to finally make his boxing debut with TKO through a massive event, due to be broadcast on Netflix. ‌ Alvarez will put his undisputed super middleweight titles on the line against the unbeaten star, with Crawford stepping up two weight divisions for the bout. The occasion is expected to be amongst the biggest sporting events of 2025, so it is hardly surprising that numerous fighters are eager to be involved. ‌ Thurman is particularly keen to feature on the card. The 36-year-old has disclosed that he reached out to Crawford to confirm his readiness to replace 'Saul' if needed. Speaking to MillCity Boxing, Thurman revealed: "He [doesn't] really need to see me but I told Bud, I DM'd him actually recently.", reports All Out Fighting. "I said 'Hey man, if Canelo pulls out, I'm here. If anything happens to Canelo, Bud, I'm here just let me know.'" Sadly for Thurman, it appears his services won't be needed after Crawford responded with a gentle laugh, answering: "We good pimp, we good, we got this." Thurman has boasted a stellar career since capturing the interim WBA welterweight crown in 2013 against Diego Chaves. He subsequently defended his title triumphantly against fighters including Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero. In 2019, he endured his maiden professional defeat to Manny Pacquiao - prompting the boxer to step away for three years. He made his comeback in 2022, overcoming Mario Barrios before taking another three-year break. He stepped back into the ring in March and proved victorious upon his return, knocking out Brock Jarvis in the third round. Despite his impressive comeback, a bout with either Crawford or Canelo could be too soon for Thurman. Discussing the upcoming clash, 'Saul' remarked: "I'm super happy to be making history again and this time on a Riyadh Season Card that will be broadcast on Netflix. On September 13, I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world." Likewise, Crawford has pledged to deliver a career-defining performance and claim a decisive triumph on fight night. "My perfect record speaks for itself," Crawford said. "I am the best fighter in the world and no matter the opponent or weight class, I have always come out on top. On September 13, my hand will be raised once again as the world watches greatness." When is Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford? The 12-round super-middleweight clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is set for Saturday, September 13. The official fight times will be announced nearer the time, but it's anticipated that the main undercard will kick off around midnight UK time. The main event ring walks are expected to commence at roughly 4am UK time. The event will be live-streamed on Netflix. Boxing enthusiasts can subscribe to the streaming platform for an initial £4.99 per month with adverts ($6.99 US) or £7.99 ($15.49) per month without. Existing subscribers will be able to watch the event at no additional charge.

DAR Patriotic Car Show fundraiser to be held at Texas Panhandle War Memorial

The Molly Goodnight Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will host its second annual Patriotic Car Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Texas Panhandle War Memorial Education Center, 4111 S. Georgia in Amarillo, in its shaded and spacious parking lot. Last year, the event had 20 entries, and this year, the DAR is hoping for a full parking lot on the expanded facility. Cheryl Thurman, car show coordinator, said that the event has grown since last year and will have literally something for everyone, including the kids. Owners of winning cars will be presented with handmade wooden plaques, made by the HoDAR, the name for a husband of one of the DAR members. 'None of us knew anything about having a car show, but we joined groups and went to car shows and figured out how to do it,' she said. 'The Volley for Veterans group has four men who volunteered to be judges for the show. They were so serious that they took a course in judging car shows,' Thurman said. 'They attend ceremonies all around our region and pay for it out of their pocket. Last year they attended 248 different ceremonies. Monies we make will help them in the costs.' There will be several booths, including ones for Amarillo Area Geneology Society, Wreaths Across America, and Volleys for Veterans, to name a few. The event, a fundraiser for the chapter's projects and activities, will also include a bake sale; children's activities; hot dogs, sold with chips and a drink for $5; a snowcone stand from 4-H kids in Claude, who are raising money for their projects; and a raffle for a BB gun and exciting themed baskets. Thurman said there will be baskets available including: Car basket, with everything needed for a car; Mary Kay beauty products for women; Gourmet gift basket with honey products, jellies and other gifts from local farmer's markets; Pet basket full of goodies and toys for your pet; and Entertainment basket containing four tickets to a Sod Poodles home game on the night of your choice, movie tickets, dinner tickets and more. Attendees can buy one ticket for $10 or five tickets for $45. There are two BB guns, which will give people twice the chance. The buyer can put which basket they are interested in. Proceeds will go to help fund projects such as Volleys for Veterans and towards helping local area youth in giving Youth Citizenship Awards in 38 area schools and other worthwhile projects, including Appreciation Day and Snack Day at Crockett Junior High School, who they have adopted. 'We'd like to do more,' Thurman said, 'but it all costs money.' The event is free for the public, with a $25 early registration fee to register a vehicle ($30 day of event). For information about sponsorships or general information, contact Cheryl Thurman, car show coordinator, at 806-584-1613. To register for the car show in advance, contact Mellessa Denny, 806-236-0190. Vehicle categories include: Founding Fathers (before 1950) Liberty Muscle (1950–1974) Bicentennial Beauties (1975–1999) Enduring Freedom (2000 and newer) Freedom Fighters (trucks) Lafayette (foreign vehicles) There is also a melting pot category for special interest in the works, motorcycles, and miscellaneous. Hand-crafted plaques will be awarded in each category, with the Patriot Award going to best in show. Chapter members recruited local sponsors, donors and vendors. Kids will have fun and games inside the TPWM building with a scavenger hunt and a chance to sign the kid-friendly Declaration of Independence with an old-fashioned feathered quill pen. The kids will be able to keep their copy of the Declaration. The DAR chapter, which hosted its centennial celebration in April, supports veterans and active-duty military, Junior ROTC medals, local teachers and student leadership awards, a float in Canyon's annual Fourth of July parade, Llano Cemetery, the Goodnight Ranch, and Volleys for Veterans Honor Guard. DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women's lineage organization that emphasizes service in three key areas: patriotism, education, and historic preservation. DAR is open to any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot in the American Revolution. Uma Thurman reflects on sword training for 'Kill Bill' ahead of 'The Old Guard 2' release

Hollywood star Uma Thurman , who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming project, The Old Guard 2, has opened up about the intense physical preparation she underwent for 'Kill Bill..' The 55-year-old actress, renowned for her iconic role as The Bride in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2, revealed that her return to action films this year came without time for full training. Thurman told The Sunday Times: "Fortunately I had put in hundreds of hours learning how to hold a sword (for Kill Bill 1 and 2)." In her new action film 'The Old Guard 2,' a sequel to the 2020 action hit, Thurman plays Discord, a 5,000-year-old immortal warrior who engages in an epic sword fight opposite Charlize Theron 's character, Andromache, near a secret nuclear facility, reports Thurman added about her Kill Bill muscle memory coming in handy during the shoot: "You may not be limber and strong. But if your brain has learnt how to memorise sequences of movements, you can get back in that zone." For Kill Bill, Thurman trained for eight hours a day across three months in preparation for the role. That experience, she said, proved invaluable when returning to the genre. Her character in 'The Old Guard 2' marks her first sword-wielding performance since Quentin Tarantino's films, and it has been more than two decades since she last performed choreographed combat on screen. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Launch: 2/3/4 BHK Luxury in Panvel L&T Panvel Enquire Now Undo Thurman's new film is directed by Victoria Mahoney and follows a group of age-old warriors with supernatural powers who fight to protect humanity. The original, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, was praised for its blend of grounded drama and stylised violence. Speaking about the appeal of The Old Guard, Thurman said: "I thought that first movie was really unusual, a superb female-led action film that had depth, drama and really beautiful, naturalistic acting." She also credited her co-star and producer Charlize Theron, 48, as a major draw for signing on. Thurman added: "Charlize is a miraculous performer, a very powerful individual and as charismatic in person as on screen. And I liked the idea of playing a supporting role to another actress who I thought had done really significant work in the drama/action field."

Uma Thurman Gave the Canadian Tuxedo a Surprising Twist

Canadian tuxedos have always possessed an 'if you know, you know' kind of chicness, but how you style them makes all the difference. Uma Thurman embraced the look at the New York premiere of Dexter Resurrection, wearing a custom GapStudio denim ensemble designed by Zac Posen, executive vice president and creative director of Gap Inc. The Kill Bill actress posed for photos alongside the original Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, and co-star Peter Dinklage. The trick to making it not your dad's Canadian tuxedo? Swap the separates for a wide-legged jumpsuit. Underneath, Thurman sported an ivory silk charmeuse long-sleeve collared shirt. Both the blouse and the darker wash helped bring the typically casual look from day to night. 'Uma is a longtime friend and a true force—she brings such elegance, intelligence, and magnetism to everything she does,' Posen says in a press release. 'I wanted this custom indigo denim look to feel effortless but powerful, just like her. It's all about precision, ease and that undeniable Uma presence.' Gap is in the midst of a quiet renaissance. Since Posen's appointment in February 2024, an unmistakable It factor has crept back into the household brand. Red carpet moments have played a key role in establishing its evolving house codes under his direction. 'Each one has been a powerful way to express GapStudio's creative potential,' Posen told ELLE earlier this month. 'Red carpet dressing is a kind of high-frequency communication—it lets us amplify the brand codes through an artistic lens.' From Laura Harrier's three-piece suit at the 2025 Met Gala to Anne Hathaway's shoppable shirtdress—and now Thurman's denim jumpsuit—Posen has seamlessly blended Gap's sensibilities with his own relatable allure.

Uma Thurman Shares the Reason Why She Left the Action Genre Behind After ‘Kill Bill'

Legacy has been top of mind for Uma Thurman: It's the primary reason she all but entirely avoided the action genre since 'Kill Vill Vol. 2' came out in 2004. That's about to change with her appearance in Netflix's 'The Old Guard 2,' as the villain Discord. It took a particularly special film to get Thurman out of action-movie retirement, she said on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon' June 17. More from IndieWire Jennifer Love Hewitt on Horror Comeback: 'I'm There for the Moms' Danny Boyle Turned Down 'Alien: Resurrection' Because 'I Couldn't Handle the CG' 'I never really followed 'Kill Bill' up with action because I didn't kind of want to be in a whole bunch of 'B' action movies,' Thurman said. 'When you do 'Kill Bill,' you never stop hearing about, you know, it's like, 'Oh, got to be very careful about what I do next.' So I did other stuff.' That meant, post-'Kill Bill,' Thurman appeared in the musical 'The Producers,' rom-coms like 'Playing for Keeps,' and auteur projects such as Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac' and 'The House that Jack Built' and Paul Schrader's 'Oh, Canada!' But never really action again, until 'The Old Guard 2.' The first movie, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Charlize Theron, who returns for the sequel, impressed Thurman with its 'depth' and by being 'quite moving.' In fact, she had such regard for Theron's work on that film that when Fallon asked her if being in this movie gave Thurman an opportunity to 'show everyone how it's done,' she had a pointed response. 'I didn't think I was going to show anybody how it's done after I saw Charlize in 'Old Guard 1,'' Thurman said. 'This one seemed different [from other action movies she was offered] because in 'Old Guard 1' Charlize was just so epic in it. And so I thought, 'Well, I could go do this for her in that. Where she's kind of taking the genre there. I'll go support her and fight her and battle her out.'' 'Putting her toe' into the action genre again, as she put it, didn't come quite as easily to Thurman as one might have thought, in part because she came aboard the project late and didn't have time for training beforehand. 'Oh, if only I could have trained,' she said. 'No, I came on to do it kind of at the end. So I had no training. I was like, 'Oh yeah, a sword. I think I hold it like this.'' Sounds like someone needs a return visit to Hattori Hanzo.
