'I offered to be Terence Crawford's back-up for Canelo fight - but got laughed off'
Former boxing world champion Keith Thurman volunteered to step in should either Canelo Alvarez or Terence Crawford withdraw from their upcoming clash - but was brutally laughed off.
The two pound-for-pound legends are scheduled to meet in a historic dust-up in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 13. Working alongside Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh and Sela, UFC president Dana White is poised to finally make his boxing debut with TKO through a massive event, due to be broadcast on Netflix.
Alvarez will put his undisputed super middleweight titles on the line against the unbeaten star, with Crawford stepping up two weight divisions for the bout. The occasion is expected to be amongst the biggest sporting events of 2025, so it is hardly surprising that numerous fighters are eager to be involved.
Thurman is particularly keen to feature on the card. The 36-year-old has disclosed that he reached out to Crawford to confirm his readiness to replace 'Saul' if needed. Speaking to MillCity Boxing, Thurman revealed: "He [doesn't] really need to see me but I told Bud, I DM'd him actually recently.", reports All Out Fighting.
"I said 'Hey man, if Canelo pulls out, I'm here. If anything happens to Canelo, Bud, I'm here just let me know.'" Sadly for Thurman, it appears his services won't be needed after Crawford responded with a gentle laugh, answering: "We good pimp, we good, we got this."
Thurman has boasted a stellar career since capturing the interim WBA welterweight crown in 2013 against Diego Chaves. He subsequently defended his title triumphantly against fighters including Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero. In 2019, he endured his maiden professional defeat to Manny Pacquiao - prompting the boxer to step away for three years. He made his comeback in 2022, overcoming Mario Barrios before taking another three-year break. He stepped back into the ring in March and proved victorious upon his return, knocking out Brock Jarvis in the third round.
Despite his impressive comeback, a bout with either Crawford or Canelo could be too soon for Thurman. Discussing the upcoming clash, 'Saul' remarked: "I'm super happy to be making history again and this time on a Riyadh Season Card that will be broadcast on Netflix. On September 13, I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world."
Likewise, Crawford has pledged to deliver a career-defining performance and claim a decisive triumph on fight night. "My perfect record speaks for itself," Crawford said. "I am the best fighter in the world and no matter the opponent or weight class, I have always come out on top. On September 13, my hand will be raised once again as the world watches greatness."
When is Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford?
The 12-round super-middleweight clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is set for Saturday, September 13. The official fight times will be announced nearer the time, but it's anticipated that the main undercard will kick off around midnight UK time.
The main event ring walks are expected to commence at roughly 4am UK time. The event will be live-streamed on Netflix. Boxing enthusiasts can subscribe to the streaming platform for an initial £4.99 per month with adverts ($6.99 US) or £7.99 ($15.49) per month without. Existing subscribers will be able to watch the event at no additional charge.

Travis Kelce posts unseen photos from behind the scenes of Happy Gilmore 2 after 'surreal' Netflix cameo
Travis Kelce has given fans a glimpse behind the camera of Happy Gilmore 2, with the NFL legend posting several pictures from the set of the Netflix film. Kelce enjoys a cameo in the golf comedy, which was released on Friday - three decade after Adam Sandler starred in the original classic. To mark the release, Kelce shared a photo dump from his time working on the film. He is seen on set alongside Sandler, his father Ed and even golf legend Jack Nicklaus. 'Man this life is crazy!! Everybody go check it out right now.' Kelce is preparing for his 13th season in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs but the 35-year-old has already taken his first steps into acting. The tight end has hosted a gameshow - 'Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?' - and appeared in horror series 'Grotesquerie'. Now the three-time Super Bowl champion plays the role of a server in Happy Gilmore 2. He is one of many athletes to appear in the film, with Nicklaus, John Daly, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy among the golf stars to make cameos. Kelce is not a prolific user of social media but this was the tight end's second photo dump in as many ways. Happy Gilmore 2 leaves fans in 'hysterics' with surprise cameo as sequel packed with guest stars
Happy Gilmore 2 was released on Netflix on Friday with Adam Sandler reprising his role in a follow up to the hit 1996 comedy Netflix viewers have hailed a surprise cameo in Happy Gilmore 2 as 'perfect', leaving them in stitches over the comedy sequel. After nearly three decades of anticipation, the Adam Sandler golf comedy was finally released on the streaming platform this Friday (25th July). Despite boasting an extensive filmography, legendary comedian Sandler has only made sequels to three of his films before Happy Gilmore 2. Grown Ups marked the first time he reprised a character, followed by Hotel Transylvania and Murder Mystery. Fans were convinced they would never see the day when he'd revisit the rough-around-the-edges golfer with a heart of gold, reports the Manchester Evening News. The original Happy Gilmore saw him abandon his dream of becoming a hockey player after realising his anger turned him into an unconventional golfing sensation. Released in 1996, and starring Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller and the late Carl Weathers, the film became a staple at teenage sleepovers upon its VHS release. In an era where nostalgia is king, Happy Gilmore 2 sees its eponymous character return to the sport he hasn't played since defeating Shooter McGavin in the original. This time around, Happy is determined to win enough money to afford his daughter's pricey ballet lessons, with Sandler's real-life daughter Sunny Sandler portraying the teenager. While fans initially just wanted to catch up with Happy, it's the celebrity cameos that have become the hot topic on social media. Golfing legends John Daly, Paige Spiranac, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris all make appearances as themselves in the film. The film also features cameos from Benny Safdie of Oppenheimer fame, Spanish musician Bad Bunny, and professional wrestlers MJF and Becky Lynch. NFL star Travis Kelce also appears, along with comedic stars Jon Lovitz, Rob Schneider and Steve Buscemi. There are also appearances from podcasters Bobby Lee and Sean Evans, plus musician Post Malone. However, the biggest surprise comes in the form of a cameo from none other than rap icon Eminem, who previously shared screen space with Sandler in 2009's Funny People. In a departure from his usual self-portrayals, Marshall Mathers plays a heckler who tries to throw Happy off his game by calling him a 'jack**'. Things don't end well for Eminem, who sports a dark wig and bucket hat, as he ultimately gets thrown into a river with an alligator. Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their reactions to the unexpected moment. That's a weird sentence." @LevertonCameron posted: "Eminem's cameo is the best part of #HappyGilmore2." Twitter user @alsopeterbrown expressed: "I am so very pleased to report that #HappyGilmore2 doesn't suck and is genuinely funny with a lot of heart. It's not on par with the original but only being a few strokes behind after three decades away is honestly a gigantic win for modern feature length comedies." Meanwhile, @carmic38304 declared: "HAPPY GILMORE 2, IS HILARIOUSLY GOOD!"
