TNPL 2025: A Essakimuthu, iDreamer and cricketer
CHENNAI: iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans pacer A Esakkimuthu remembers the first time he held a cricket ball in his hand. It was the U16 selection trials in Tirunelveli and Esakkimuthu, a class tenth student from Kalakudi, a small village tucked away from the hassles of Tirunelveli city, who had watched T Natarajan get picked in the IPL auction the year before, wondering if he could dream of something similar. 'Will it happen to me one day?' he dreamt. He had asked his father, who runs a school van service from the neighbourhood villages to Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, for a white t-shirt and pants. He borrowed 'bata shoes' from a school-going kid in Kalakudi before going to the trials. He had only played with a 'stumper' ball and had never touched a cricket ball before. In the trials, he somehow hit a few big shots before beating the bat with his pace and got selected. However, considering the financial situation at home and the fact that Esakki was studying well, he could not continue. 'My dad had met with an accident. The situation was not good. Dad and two brothers were all working. In all this, I could not even think of cricket. You need money to play and train. So I understood the situation and didn't go,' he recalls. It lit up a fury of fire within. 'Veri (fire of passion)' is the word he keeps repeating. So much so that when he got a chance to play for Urumu Dhanalakshmi Arts College, Tiruchy, the Bachelor of Social Work student gave his everything. Esakkimuthu impressed an opposition batter, Yuvaraj from Bishop Heber College, who would take him under his wings. Esakkimuthu shifted colleges for his PG (Library Science) and continued to train with Yuvaraj. He was introduced to a senior pacer Senthil Nathan, Veeraraghavan Ramachandran of Alchemy Academy and trainer Michael Anton.

Why Has TNPL Punished India Legend R Ashwin?
Last Updated: Legendary India allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been sanctioned by the Tamila Nadu Premier League for showing dissent at an umpiring decision. Ravichandran Ashwin has reportedly been punished by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) for dissenting against an on-field decision. During a TNPL match between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday, Ashwin disputed an LBW decision with the umpire. Ashwin, captain of Dindigul Dragons, attempted a sweep shot off Tiruppur Tamizhans left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore in the fifth over. Missing the ball, he was adjudged LBW. The 38-year-old's innings concluded at 18 off 11 balls, including two fours and a six. Ashwin received a 10 per cent fine for his dissent and a further 20 per cent fine for 'misuse of equipment". 'There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game," Cricbuzz quoted a TNPL official as saying. 'Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions." Ashwin's dismissal precipitated a dramatic collapse. From 39/0, Dindigul Dragons were bowled out for just 93 in 16.2 overs. Tiruppur Tamizhans comfortably chased down the target of 94, securing a nine-wicket victory in 9.1 overs. Dindigul Dragons currently sit fifth in the TNPL 2025 points table after two games, with one win and one loss. Chepauk Super Gillies lead the standings, having won both their matches to accumulate four points. Dindigul Dragons have a five-day break before their next match on Saturday against Madurai Panthers. The TNPL adheres to a format similar to the IPL. The top four teams at the end of the league stage qualify for the playoffs. The top two teams compete in the first qualifier, with the winner progressing directly to the final. The loser of the first qualifier then plays the winner of the Eliminator match (contested between the third and fourth placed teams) in the second qualifier with the winner entering the final. The final is scheduled for 6 July. First Published: June 10, 2025, 08:31 IST

R Ashwin fined for outburst on umpires during TNPL game
Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin has been fined 30 per cent for a breach of the code of conduct during the Tamil Nadu Premier League game between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans held on Sunday. 'There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game,' a TNPL official told Cricbuzz. 'Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions.' The 38-year-old who plays for Dindigul Dragons was judged LBW off the bowling of Sai Kishore, who plays for Tiruppur Tamizhans. Ashwin was seen in a long argument with the umpire Venkatesan Krithika, and he was thundering off the field and was seen hitting his pads in anger with the bat. 'Ashwin is saying 'he has bowled this from over the stumps, ma'am', arguing his case that it was pitched well outside leg stump,' said one of the commentators on AIR during the incident. The TNPL has two DRS per innings, and when this incident happened in the fifth over, Ashwin's team, Dindigul Dragons, had exhausted both their reviews, that too in the first over. Ashwin's opening partner, Shivam Singh, used both the DRS options in a valiant attempt to overturn two legitimate calls made by Venkatesan Krithika for a wide. With the new leg-side wide rule in place, Shivam was guilty of moving across, which the umpire noticed and called it a fair delivery. But Shivam in consultation with Ashwin, took DRS in the hope that it would be ruled a wide and ended up losing both the reviews. Dragons could not put on much of a score after Ashwin fell. Ashwin's 18 is the second-highest score alongside RK Jayant. Shivam Singh, with his 30, was the top scorer as the Dragons were bundled out for a mere 93 runs from 16.2 overs. Esakkimuthu A was the pick of the bowlers for Tamizhans with four wickets, with M Mathivannan picking three wickets. Skipper Sai Kishore too chipped in with a couple. Tamizhans chased the total in 11.5 overs for the loss of one wicket. Tushar Raheja with his 39-ball 65 was the top scorer of the innings. Ganeshan Periyaswamy was the lone wicket-tacker for Dragons.

Ashwin punished for outburst at umpires, hitting his pads and throwing gloves in the air in TNPL match
Veteran India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin is not having a good time on the cricket field after announcing his retirement from international cricket. Ashwin, who had an ordinary IPL with both bat and ball for the Chennai Super Kings, was reportedly punished for a breach of code of conduct during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday (June 8) at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Cricket Ground in Coimbatore. Dindigul captain Ashwin was fined 30% of his match fees after the match referee, Arjun Kripal Singh, found him guilty on two accounts - showing dissent towards the umpires and misuse of equipment. "There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game," a TNPL official told Cricbuzz. "Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions." Ashwin was seen having a heated argument with umpire Kritika after being given out lbw in the penultimate ball of the fifth over off the bowling of his counterpart in Tiruppur Tamizhans, R Sai Kishore. Sai Kishore tossed one up on the pads, inviting Ashwin for the big shot. The right-hander, who decided to open the batting, went for a big sweep but failed to make any connection. The ball appeared to have pitched outside the leg stump, but the umpire raised her finger, much to the dismay of Ashwin. Ashwin could not use DRS as Didigul had already exhausted their reviews on unsuccessful wide-ball referrals. The 38-year-old walked towards the umpire and mouthed a few words. He continued to demand an explanation from the umpires, who did not feel compelled to reply. Furious at the turn of events, Ashwin stormed off the pitch. While walking back to the pavilion, he slammed the bat on his pads and threw his gloves in the air inches away from the dugout. His show of dissent did not stop there. Ashwin kept shouting at the umpires from the dugout. His body and hand gestures are as aggressive as they can be. Ashwin got Dindigul Dragons off to a brisk start with a quick 18 off 11 balls, featuring two fours and a six. But his dismissal at 39/1 in the fifth over triggered a dramatic collapse, as Dindigul lost their remaining nine wickets for just 54 runs, crumbling to 93 all out in 16.2 overs. The Tiruppur Tamizhans made light work of the modest target. Wicketkeeper-batter Tushar Raheja anchored the chase with an unbeaten 65, sealing a dominant nine-wicket win with 49 balls to spare. With this comprehensive victory, Tiruppur asserted their dominance, while Dindigul slipped to fifth place on the TNPL points table, with one win and one loss from two matches. This is the ninth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League, which kicked off on June 6 and runs through to July 6. Tiruppur's bowlers were outstanding as a unit, dismantling Dindigul's lineup with disciplined spells. Esakkimuthu led the attack with impressive figures, claiming four wickets, while Sai Kishore picked up two. Shivam was the only notable contributor with the bat for Dindigul, scoring 30, as only three batters managed to reach double figures. Ashwin had a forgettable IPL 2024 campaign with Chennai Super Kings, where he started his IPL journey back in 2009. He picked up just 7 wickets in 9 matches and contributed a mere 33 runs, even being dropped from the playing XI in some games. With his form dipping, CSK may consider releasing the veteran all-rounder ahead of the next season.
