Legendary India allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been sanctioned by the Tamila Nadu Premier League for showing dissent at an umpiring decision.
Ravichandran Ashwin has reportedly been punished by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) for dissenting against an on-field decision. During a TNPL match between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday, Ashwin disputed an LBW decision with the umpire.
Ashwin, captain of Dindigul Dragons, attempted a sweep shot off Tiruppur Tamizhans left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore in the fifth over. Missing the ball, he was adjudged LBW. The 38-year-old's innings concluded at 18 off 11 balls, including two fours and a six.
Ashwin received a 10 per cent fine for his dissent and a further 20 per cent fine for 'misuse of equipment".
'There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game," Cricbuzz quoted a TNPL official as saying. 'Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions."
Ashwin's dismissal precipitated a dramatic collapse. From 39/0, Dindigul Dragons were bowled out for just 93 in 16.2 overs. Tiruppur Tamizhans comfortably chased down the target of 94, securing a nine-wicket victory in 9.1 overs.
Dindigul Dragons currently sit fifth in the TNPL 2025 points table after two games, with one win and one loss. Chepauk Super Gillies lead the standings, having won both their matches to accumulate four points.
Dindigul Dragons have a five-day break before their next match on Saturday against Madurai Panthers.
The TNPL adheres to a format similar to the IPL. The top four teams at the end of the league stage qualify for the playoffs. The top two teams compete in the first qualifier, with the winner progressing directly to the final. The loser of the first qualifier then plays the winner of the Eliminator match (contested between the third and fourth placed teams) in the second qualifier with the winner entering the final.
The final is scheduled for 6 July.

Ashwin Points Out 'Imperfections' On Comparison Between IND Vs ENG And Ashes

Last Updated: Ashwin praised the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England, which ended 2-2, as better than the 2005 Ashes. Gill's captaincy era began with promise. Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has praised the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England, which ended in a 2-2 draw, as a series superior to the 2005 Ashes series between Australia and England in the UK. Speaking on his YouTube Channel, Ash ki Baat, Ashwin reflected on India's thrilling six-run victory over England at The Oval on Monday. This result helped India level the series 2-2 and signaled the beginning of Shubman Gill's era as captain, showcasing promise, determination, and record-breaking performances. The 2005 Ashes series saw England reclaim the prestigious urn after two successive losses under Nasser Hussain, playing with a never-give-up attitude under Michael Vaughan's leadership. Both bowling sides in 2005 boasted immense experience and talent, with Australia featuring top pacers like Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie, Michael Kasprowicz, Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, and spinner Shane Warne. England's line-up included James Anderson, Steve Harmison, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, and Andrew Flintoff. The batting units were equally strong, with Australia fielding veterans Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Damien Martyn, and Justin Langer, alongside rising stars like Michael Clarke, Simon Katich, and Brad Haddin. England featured stars like Marcus Trescothick and Vaughan, supported by emerging talents like Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood, Kevin Pietersen, and Ian Bell. England won the series 2-1 after initially being 1-0 down, securing victories in Birmingham and Nottingham. Ashwin remarked that the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was better than the 2005 Ashes, highlighting the 'imperfection" faced by both teams. 'A lot of people are comparing this series with the 2005 Ashes, but I think this series was slightly better than even the 2005 Ashes – because there was so much more imperfection, from both sides," Ashwin said. 'If you look at that Australian team, there was Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, you had Michael Kasprowicz, Shaun Tait. From this side [England] you had Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, you had Ashley Giles. There was a lot of experience in the bowling attacks. There was experience in the batting too. There was a lot of hard-fought cricket, where you could not see a lot of mistakes. It was hard-fought," he added. Ashwin noted the experienced Australian team with Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Michael Kasprowicz, and Shaun Tait, while England had Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, and Ashley Giles. He commented on the hard-fought nature of the 2005 series, which lacked visible mistakes. India had a young captain in Shubman Gill, scrutinized for his poor record outside Asia before the series. Senior stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin had retired from Test cricket. India's pace attack included Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Shardul Thakur, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Arshdeep Singh, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, who played only three Tests due to workload issues, and Mohammed Siraj. India struggled with their number three batting spot, rotating Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, both of whom failed to make significant impacts. England faced their own 'imperfections," with skipper Ben Stokes' batting form and fitness under scrutiny. Their pace attack was weakened by the absence of Stuart Broad and James Anderson, leaving Chris Woakes to lead alongside Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Brydon Carse. Jofra Archer returned to Tests after four years but only played two Tests, and experienced pacer Mark Wood was also missing. What Did Ashwin Say About India vs England? Ashwin pointed out numerous mistakes by players in the series, noting improvements by young players. 'But the young players have corrected their mistakes and gotten better through the series. You had somebody like KL Rahul who's not put a foot wrong in the series. Then you had somebody like a Rishabh Pant or Shubman Gill, who made errors – both got run out once – they played some poor shots and got out at the crucial moments," he continued. 'In the bowling too, Mohammed Siraj has had some down spells, Prasidh [Krishna] has had some ordinary spells. England have bowled poorly, but have fought back through Ben Stokes. So there has been a lot of imperfection. There was a lot of perfection in the 2005 Ashes, but we got to see a lot of imperfection in this series," he continued. In bowling, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna had inconsistent spells, while England's bowlers also struggled but fought back through Ben Stokes. Ashwin said the imperfections were the 'beauty" of the series, with players correcting their vulnerabilities and making the series feel like a 'festival." 'For anyone who paid money to go watch the match, no one would say they did not have their money's worth. Twenty-five days of riveting cricket, and I could give anything to watch this series, I have not missed a moment," he concluded. In the match, England opted to bowl first, reducing India to 153/6. Karun Nair (57) and Washington Sundar (26) formed a 58-run partnership, with India eventually bundled out for 224. Gus Atkinson took five wickets, supported by Josh Tongue (3/57). England's Zak Crawley (64) and Ben Duckett (43) provided a 92-run opening stand, and Harry Brook (53) scored a fifty, leading England to 247 and a 23-run lead. India's second innings saw contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal (118), Akash Deep (66), Ravindra Jadeja (53), and Washington Sundar (53). Sundar's crucial 10th wicket stand with Krishna helped India reach 396, setting a target of 374 for England. Despite a strong 195-run partnership between Harry Brook (111) and Joe Root (105), England fell short by six runs, bowled out for 367, leaving the series drawn 2-2. The Shubman Gill era has begun with great promise and determination, hinting at a bright future for Indian cricket. R Ashwin on Anderson-Tendulkar trophy: This series was slightly better than even the 2005 Ashes

The series Anderson-Tendulkar trophy came to a thrilling close on Monday after Gus Atkinson's stumps were cleaned up by Mohammed Siraj.
