Corrie star reveals worrying future for Todd as Theo story escalates
Gareth Pierce has played troublemaker Todd Grimshaw since 2020. When the Coronation Street character returned, he was hellbent on splitting Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) up.
The plan was complex and put a spotlight on the traits that certainly proved Todd didn't have the best moral compass.
The narrative reached a dramatic conclusion, and Todd became isolated from the likes of Billy, Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) and Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) due to the depths he sunk to in the process.
It's safe to say that this was the last storyline where Todd was really in the centre of the spotlight.
During the pandemic, there was a period where Todd and Billy's friendship started to mend itself, and the character was also involved in drama at the funeral parlour alongside friend and colleague George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).
As a huge fan of the character, I found the lack of screentime for Todd somewhat frustrating in this period. In 2022, I wrote about how he had been put back on the bench so soon after the story with Billy and Paul, and it truly felt like the soap was missing an opportunity to have him at the centre of a really powerful plot exploring his mental health, and how the plan of his really impacted him.
But, time has past and now, things are changing.
Recently, I sat down with star Gareth Pierce to discuss Todd's journey in Weatherfield since he took over the role. We spoke about the many layers of Todd and the growth the character has had, but started with talking about the return five years ago.
'I guess at the start it was about establishing the recast. And also, I suppose what was harder for that at that time, was that you were seeing Todd kind of at his worst as well, where he was, you know, coming back very jealous, probably full of shame as well, in the ways that he's kind of let down Billy and Summer, in the way that he'd left and then just returned determined to split him and Paul.
'I think it was that initial kind of year and a half or so that was super, super busy. And then I suppose, in terms of the MND storyline, Todd was a little bit more peripheral than that. But then that was still to Todd's benefit, because I think you kind of ended up with some really sweet scenes and also, a sweet friendship between Paul and Todd, which obviously didn't look very likely in terms of the way they originally met.'
It was earlier this year that saw a huge new storyline finally begin for Todd.
He met a scaffolder called Theo, played by James Cartwright, and things really haven't been the same since.
We've learnt since then that Theo is an incredibly complex person with a traumatic past. He had been living with wife Danielle (Natalie Anderson) and their children for many years, with Danielle previously having no clue that Theo is gay.
His difficult upbringing was then explored, with Theo revealing that he had been put through conversion therapy. Theo often experiences angry and confusing outbursts as a result of a lot of things floating around his mind, and it's something Todd is trying to help him with.
'I think we have a more mature version of Todd now. I think going through losing a young friend like Paul, it's made him rehabilitate himself and prove he's changed. I think we definitely do have a more mature version of Todd that is maybe able to deal with what life throws at him, but we can't forget that not too long ago we had a Todd that felt a little bit like the boy that had never grown up.
'I think he might have a creeping feeling that this is too big for him and that he is out of his depth but also, I think he's changed to the point that he's more likely to see fault in himself than the other person, and be willing to try.'
In tonight's episode, Theo will exude his jealousy when he finds out that Todd is spending time with James Bailey (Jason Callender).
It is perhaps seen as something relatively small to Todd, given it's the start of a new relationship for him and Theo but to the audience, who are viewing Theo's behaviour from a different perspective to Todd, it's a sign that things may get worse.
'I think it's far more interesting if there's a part of Todd that is flattered by that flirtation [between him and James], that does potentially flirt back a bit', Gareth explained.
'I think that probably in terms of where he is with Theo in the relationship at that point, there is a sense that he can maybe see a slightly easier path that's there with James.
'I don't think that he's tempted to the point that he would do something. I think he pulls back from there, but I think that it's far more interesting…because we know Todd can make plenty of ill-advised choices, and do plenty of less or have plenty less appealing aspects to his character. So I think it's important that we hold on to those.'
Opening up about the future of this story, Gareth told me: 'I think at this point, we're starting to spot some anger management issues on Theo's part, at the very least. There's some flashes of anger that have left Todd shocked but equally, because he's had that insight into the conversion therapy and where Theo is coming into this new life from, he's perhaps willing to guide him through it.
'He's trying to be understanding of Theo. He's been suppressing his sexuality for so long, Todd is trying to encourage him towards being someone that can be comfortable in their new gay identity.
'I think Todd has spotted many things from Theo, but he still has the mindset that he can fix this and because of the love that's there, he's thinking they will get through it. Our audience are probably also spotting some of those flashes of jealousy and perhaps a kind of need to control that maybe Todd is not currently spotting or doesn't want to spot.'
Gareth went on to highlight that Todd will struggle to differentiate between what is out of order where Theo's behaviour is concerned, and what can be forgiven due to the life he's lived so far.
'I think that's definitely going to be a complicating factor going forward. He knows there are very valid reasons for Theo's confusion and probably some internalised homophobia, but that doesn't mean you can excuse all of the less healthy approaches to navigating the relationship.

'That will be, in many ways, Todd's biggest challenge, how to steer the relationship to somewhere healthy.' More Trending
As this story begins to gather pace, Gareth also confirmed Todd's relationship with George will continue to be explored.
'What's nice is that they've got a very solid friendship, and George is like a father figure that Todd has never had. What's important I think is the intention of friendship hasn't weakened just because Eileen has gone. I definitely think that George will be someone that's still looking out for Todd.'
'A few years ago there was a moment where George connected with Todd because he believed in him. I think from George's perspective, he sees a little bit of himself in Todd. He shows faith in some moments.

'I think there was a similar level of vulnerability from Todd there [in the scene earlier in the week]. He's really revealing quite a lot about his true feelings, which we know that he tends to deflect with sarcasm and sardonic looks a lot of the time.'

Denise Welch heaps praise on son Matty Healy after divisive Glasto set
Denise Welch has praised her son Matty Healy - frontman of rock band The 1975 - after his Friday night headline performance at Glastonbury divided fans Denise Welch - mum of The 1975's Matty Healy - has heaped praise on her son after his Glastonbury Festival headline set on the Pyramid Stage proved divisive amongst fans. The 36-year-old rocker, who hit the headlines in 2023 for his brief romance with Taylor Swift and is believed to have influenced her latest album The Tortured Poets Department, was branded 'insufferable' by some fans. While others left after being heard saying it 'wasn't their vibe'. The first thing they took issue with was Matty opening the band's set holding a pint of Guinness he didn't seem to drink, with a cigarette in the other hand. He then went on a rant in which he described himself as 'probably the best songwriter of my generation', telling the crowd: "What this moment is making me realise is that - yeah. This moment is making me realise. I probably am the best, so I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. A poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. I wanted to remind you - this poetry, I believed in it for you," he said in a dig to his ex Taylor Swift. READ MORE: Glastonbury Festival's mystery Patchwork act's identity revealed with telling clue But some fans weren't here for it, with one writing on social media: 'The thing which makes Matty Healy so insufferable is it's very easy to imagine that all the b**lendery he does on stage isn't just for the performance, but that he would genuinely sashay into Gregg's reciting 14th century French poetry.' Another moaned: 'Matty Healy swaggering about with a pint he has no intention of drinking is the most annoying thing I've ever seen." While a third said: "Should have been all about the #1975 but Healy has decided to hijack it and turn in a car crash performance. You can see it in the bands faces. All he had to do was hold it together for one day and he's failed miserably." In a video shared by his Loose Women star mum Denise - who watched her son's performance from the crowd and posed for snaps with various celebs backstage - Matty appeared to look emotional at one point and was given hugs by his band members and entourage. Posting the clip to her Instagram stories, 67-year-old Denise called The 1975's performance a '1000/10' and said it was an 'unbelievable night'. Denise, who shares Matty with ex-husband Tim Healy, was at the gig with her current partner, Matty's stepdad Lincoln Townley. But the former Coronation Street star has ruled out camping and is staying off site in what looks like a glamping set up with a hot tub. She told the Mirror she had been "stressing out" ahead of her son's appearance and said: "I've not really been a festival bunny - I don't really do festivals. "The only one I've been to is Coachella. It was all VIP and very lovely. Hot, sunny and gorgeous and I thought 'Oh, this is okay'. And no one stays there, everyone goes home at the end of the night. I am stressed about Glastonbury." She added: "I am not going to stay for the whole three days. I would rather be able to dip in and out. I might dip back in for the Sunday night to see Rod [Stewart]."

ITV Coronation Street issues ‘be vigilant' warning to soap fans using social med
Coronation Street has issued warnings to fans in a social media statement. It has become known to people behind the scenes at the soap that fans are falling victim to another type of scam. Back at the start of this year, both Corrie and Emmerdale accounts shared on social media platform X that scammers were pretending to be stars from the shows. The statement said: 'Please be aware that actors from both Coronation Street and Emmerdale are currently being impersonated by scammers across all social media platforms. 'No cast member will ever directly request money for messages, meetings or any kind of personal interaction on social media. 'We are aware these sophisticated impersonations can include deep-fake footage (where it appears to be the actor talking but isn't) and personal messages which seem to be realistic and in character. We urge everybody to be vigilant. Please report any concerns to the relevant platform.' They concluded: 'The legitimate way of meeting with real members of the cast is via official 'meet and greet' events run by ITV Star Tours.' This time, audience members are being targeted by con artists pretending to be from the Coronation Street casting department – claiming to offer them a part in their favourite soap. Metro understands that fans of Emmerdale have been approached too. To warn people about the cruel trick, the Corrie X account once again shared a message online, this time saying: 'We are aware that there are some accounts impersonating the Casting department at Coronation Street on social media platforms. 'Our Casting team only uses official methods of communication, this does not involve direct messages on Twitter or any other social media. 'Please be careful when communicating online and report any concerns to the relevant platform.' This comes after Emmerdale favourite Lisa Riley told her fans not to believe AI bots pretending to be her online. The actress, 48, is best known for her role as Mandy Dingle, said on Instagram: 'Hello everybody, it's Lisa here. Now, I have to keep reiterating this, please, and please listen.' 'If something is not on my page – and my page is blue-ticked – then it is not real,' she stated, referencing the social media network's notable person verification system. 'It is AI pretending to be me, and there is nothing I can do about it. It's a hoax, it's a scam and it's a lie. 'So please, I'm begging you, don't click on it, don't believe it, don't read it, don't give it any attention. It's not true. More Trending 'I have to keep reiterating this because I am inundated with people saying that I'm attached to things that I'm not. So please, if it's not on my page, it's not real and I have not endorsed anything of that like.' She concluded: 'Listen to what I'm saying, and don't take it as the truth because it's not. From me to you, I'm so sorry that it's going on because it's not real and I have to keep telling you guys this. 'But just don't believe it. It's a hoax and a scam. It's not the truth, thank you for listening.' View More » This article was originally published on 17th June 2025. Coronation Street character declared ‘dead' by her own son
A Coronation Street character is declared dead in upcoming scenes – by her own son. Ever since his arrival on the cobbles, Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) has caused nothing but trouble for his neighbours, and his mother, Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty). Brody's behaviour got even more erratic after dad Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) was arrested for Craig Tinker's murder, and convinced Brody that he had been set up. He instantly suspected Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) and took his anger out on him by trashing his flat. The relationship between Kit and Brody has been a difficult one, and it only got worse in recent episodes when Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) revealed that Kit was Brody's biological father. Brody was horrified to learn that she had taken his DNA to do a test, after learning that Kit had slept with Lou 16 years ago. Lou was understandably furious that Brody had been told the truth, and Brody didn't exactly take the news well either. More Trending In upcoming scenes, Bernie urges Brody to make amends with Lou, but he refuses, insisting she is dead to him. With Brody currently living under Bernie's roof, she comes up with a plan to try and repair his relationship with his mum. Dragging Lou round, Bernie implores Brody to hear her out.
