Alfa Romeo Junior previewed as part of imminent range reshuffling

An official launch date for both the Junior and revised Tonale wasn't announced. The Alfa Romeo Junior will become available locally before year-end. Picture: Charl Bosch Showcased at an Alfa Romeo enthusiasts event in March, Stellantis South Africa used its Media Connect event in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 9 July, to not only formally unveil the all-new Alfa Romeo Junior, but also a pending restructured product range. Range overhaul The Junior will commence Alfa Romeo's line-up currently fronted by Tonale. ALSO READ: Junior on its way as teasers start for Alfa Romeo's smallest SUV While the Giulia and Stelvio and will retain their respective Veloce and Quadrifoglio variants until the arrival of the next generations in 2026 and 2027, the Junior's introduction will come with an overlapping of the Tonale as a result of the latter undergoing a powertrain revision. Goodbye mild-hybrid Tonale According to Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Leapmotor divisional boss, Janus Janse van Rensburg, the update will involve the current mild-hybrid Tonale being replaced by the all-wheel drive Q4 variant once stock runs out. The result is that the much lamented electrified 1.5 litre turbo-petrol engine will make way for the Brazilian-made 1.3 litre turbocharged Firefly unit combined with an 15.5kWh battery pack powering a single 70kW electric motor. Facelift Alfa Romeo will eschew the extensively panned mild-hybrid powertrain. Picture: Alfa Romeo A configuration that will result in the Tonale becoming a plug-in hybrid, the combination develops 206 kW, allowing for a claimed all-electric range of up to 80 km, and 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds versus the mild-hybrid's 8.8 seconds. Shown in facelift guise last year, the Tonale Q4 also sees the departure of the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in favour of a hybrid specific six-speed torque converter automatic. Still listed in mild-hybrid form priced at R811 899 for the entry-level Ti and at R895 129 for the top-spec Veloce, exact details regarding the Q4's availability wasn't revealed, though an official announcement is anticipated before year-end. Junior arriving soon In revealing the Junior, whose name had to be changed from Milano less than 24 hours after its global unveiling due to backlash from the Italian government, Stellantis also confirmed that the local line-up will comprise the same mild-hybrid and electric powerunits as in Europe. For the former, this involves the familiar 1.2 litre three-cylinder PureTech turbocharged petrol engine being combined with a 48 volt electrical system, plus a 21kW electric motor housed within the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Junior will go on-sale as either a mild-hybrid or full EV. Picture: Charl Bosch For South Africa, though, combined power outputs will be increased from 100kW to 115kW, but without the Q4 system as drive will go to the front wheels only. Shown in Veloce spec at the event, the all-electric Junior will be a first for Alfa Romeo in South Africa. Flagship Veloce will make exclusive use of an electric powerplant. Picture: Charl Bosch As on the Old Continent, the electric Junior remains front-wheel-drive, but in Veloce spec, with outputs of 207kW/345Nm from the 54kWh battery pack. Accordingly, the Junior Veloce will get from 0-100km/h in six seconds and require a 30 minute wait from 20-80% using a DC fast charger up to 100 kW. The claimed range is 346km. Alfa Romeo specific changes have taken place inside where the overall design is otherwise similar to the Opel Mokka. Picture: Charl Bosch Riding on the same electrified e-CMP platform as the Opel Mokka Electric, Fiat 600e, Abarth 600e and Jeep Avenger, the Junior measures 4 170mm long, 1 500mm tall and 1 780mm wide with its wheelbase stretching 2 550mm. While local specification is still to be determined, the Junior was spotted with Alfa Romeo's new 10.25-inch infotainment system incorporating Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and, being the Veloce, Sabelt sport seats trimmed in Alcantara. Stay tuned Besides specification, no details regarding pricing of the Junior is known, however, expect a possible announcement, as with the Tonale, to be made before year-end. 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce First Test: Laughing All the Way to the Track

Pros Delightful to drive Exceptionally handsome Usefully sized back seat and trunk Cons Bulky weight Dull interior design (outside of the dashboard) Questionable reputation for reliability There are dozens of cliches about Italian cars, and a fast cruise on a curvy road in the new 2.0-liter Alfa Romeo Tonale will bring every one of them to mind. Quick and lively, loaded with personality and gioia de vivere , the non-hybrid version of Alfa's Tonale subcompact SUV brought a smile to the face of every MT staffer who encountered it. Even our coldly objective test equipment seemed to display its numbers at a jaunty angle. The 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce is a lively, non-hybrid compact SUV with 268 hp and 295 lb-ft torque. It offers dynamic handling, stylish design, and Italian charm, but is slightly heavy at 3,812 lbs. Priced from $38,490, it promises an engaging, joyful driving experience. This summary was generated by AI using content from this MotorTrend article Read Next Alfa's Good Day at the Track We'll talk about why the Alfa made us smile (and a few things that made us frown) a little further down the page, but first, allow us to hit you with some numbers. The non-hybrid Tonale boasts 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged four, but it has 3,812 pounds of Alfa to haul around. That struck us as quite a bit of bulk for a subcompact SUV, especially one without an electric-traction subsystem. Competitors hover closer to the 3,500-pound mark. Still, the 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce did not embarrass itself, dashing to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and running the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds with a 93.8 mph trap speed. The Alfa responded eagerly to different launch techniques, and we achieved the best times when we wound the engine to 2,500 rpm before releasing the brake. Less fancy footwork, i.e., just releasing the brake and matting the accelerator, still yielded a vigorous start, just not the outright best numbers. Braking was just fine: A firm foot on the short-travel pedal brought the Tonale down from 60 mph in 114 confidence-inspiring feet. Italian cars may have a flair for the dramatic, but there was no drama here; the Alfa kept its rear end firmly planted and maintained excellent directional control, making us feel like we could stop not just when we wanted but where we wanted. From Strip to Street Out on the asphalt lake, shod with Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4s, the Tonale pulled 0.83 g (average) on the skidpad and ran our figure-eight lap in 26.4 seconds at an average of 0.69 g. That puts the Alfa in very good company, tying the time of the Porsche Macan T and—believe it or not—the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club. Impressive, especially when you consider the Tonale's twin handicaps of good-not-great power and a transmission that is reluctant to change down without prompting from the shift paddles. But what about other compact SUVs against which the Tonale actually competes? A couple are quicker—the now sadly defunct Hyundai Kona N-Line and the 2025 Mini Countryman S, for example—but the best of (most of) the rest don't better the low 27-second range. The Tonale's numbers weren't the only things that made us grin. We like people to picture our car testers as jaded, sober, craggy-faced old crabs who have seen and done it all. The sober part is true—we make it a point to do our instrumented testing before 4 p.m.—but most of us are (relatively) young and enthusiastic. Still, we're tricky to impress, and yet impress us the Tonale did. From the test track we headed to the twisty back roads of Los Angeles' hidden corners, where the Alfa Romeo Tonale just loves to be flung around. While one staffer opined it doesn't quite have the magic of the Giulia or even the Stelvio, it still generated way more smiles than we expect from an SUV that straddles the line between inexpensive compact and entry-level luxury. With a base price just shy of $39,000, the Tonale isn't cheap—and bear in mind you can pile on another $20,000 or so worth of options and packages—but at the lower end, it sure delivers grins for the cash. It's the kind of SUV that turns you back into a 16-year-old driver with a freshly minted license, making excuses to take the family car out to run some errands. True Beauty Comes From Without And even when we weren't driving the 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce, we enjoyed it. Our test Alfa was done up in the proper color (has Italy ever created a car that doesn't look fantastic in red?), and we found ourselves constantly looking over our shoulder after parking it. We like the squinty headlights, the trademark triangular grille, and those nifty five-petal wheels. This isn't a modern-day SUV trying to look like a classic old Alfa; rather, it shows what a vehicle looks like when a brand stays true to its design motif. Next to the driving dynamics, the Tonale's handsome looks may be its best feature. But the interior is where the SUV lets us down a little. It's functional, for sure, with comfy seats, a decent (if not exactly generous) amount of back-seat room, and a cargo bay with a nifty multilevel floor panel that lets you choose between a flat floor with hidden space underneath or maximum cubic feet. The dashboard, like the exterior, is very pretty; perhaps a bit hyperactive in its design, reflecting the Tonale's inspired driving dynamics, but we're big fans of the illuminated metal panel that serves as a centerpiece. Another feature that made us smile is the midcentury-style gauges that can be displayed on the 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster (although the pixelated movement of the video needles makes us wonder if the underlying computing hardware is entirely up to the task). Of course, it took us a while to figure out how to display these gauges; we were stuck with the ugly, modern digital speedo until we discovered the button to change display modes is located on the end of the windshield wiper stalk. Unfortunately, the rest of the interior is rather dull. There's not much adornment on the seats and rear door panels. Even if you opt for the black-and-red interior, all you get is thin red stitching and some faded red sections under your butt where you can't see them. Check out the red-and-black options offered by BMW, Acura, or Lexus—they've out-Italianed the Italians. Alfa Tonale: Viva L'Italia! The cosa about the 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce 2.0T is that it goes way beyond the numbers. This is an SUV that feels alive and makes the driver feel alive, and reminds you that, whatever your present circumstances, there's a place in the world where the sun is shining and twisty roads await. Italy is out there somewhere, and Alfa Romeo has been kind enough to bottle up a little of it for us. Fast or slow, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is as Italian as can be—and that is its single best attribute.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Owner in Canada Reports Rust After 1 Year, Dealer Declines Repair

It's disappointing to find a flaw on your brand-new car after just one year of ownership, but it's even worse if your dealership downplays it and refuses to fix it. This is what Reddit user r/AlfaRomeo says happened to them when they reported tailgate rust to their dealership. It seems they're not the only owner affected, and that a design flaw is causing the issue. As you can see in the photo above, the paintwork is bubbling up and flaking off on the inside of the tailgate of this Vancouver driver's Tonale, near the backup camera, and the metal is already exposed, so it's probably just a matter of time before it rusts through. The owner says that the way the drainage channel is built, and with the two plastic stoppers capping it, at least a quarter of an inch of water or more has to accumulate before the water starts to drain out. The dealership has pronounced the condition "100% normal" and says the warranty doesn't cover it. For the record, the Alfa Romeo warranty states that, for damage that does not appear on an outer panel that's visible when you walk around the vehicle, the coverage is three years, but only if it has rusted through and perforated the panel, which is not (yet) the case here. The dealership shrugged it off, showing the owner photos of other Tonales with the same problem. We see only two options for this owner. Take it to court and perhaps get other Tonale owners involved to get a class action going, or just drill proper draining holes to affect a permanent fix, and repair or rust-treat the area out of pocket. So far, Stellantis has not issued a formal response, even after being approached by our Canadian friends at Driving. We'll be keeping an eye on this one. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. Alfa Romeo scores triple win at Best Cars Awards 2025

Alfa Romeo has added another feather to its cap, picking up three major honours in the latest Auto Motor und Sport's Best Cars readers' poll. Looking for a new or used Alfa Romeo? Find it here with CARmag! The awards were handed out during the 836th anniversary celebrations of the Port of Hamburg, where the Italian brand's current line-up took centre stage at the city's historic Fish Auction Hall. The Giulia, Tonale and Stelvio each topped their respective categories in the long-running survey, which drew votes from more than 94 000 readers. The Giulia was named the best Midsize Import car, marking the eighth time it's claimed the title. The Tonale, Alfa Romeo's first compact SUV, won in the Compact SUV/Off-road Vehicle Import category, while the Stelvio came out on top in the Large SUV/Off-road Vehicle Import segment. Simonetta Cerruti, head of Alfa Romeo Enlarged Europe, accepted the awards in person. She credited the brand's continued success to the strong emotional connection fans have with Alfa Romeo, as well as the brand's commitment to blending Italian design with dynamic driving characteristics. This year's Best Cars awards featured 462 candidates across 13 categories, including a dedicated group for imported models. Alfa Romeo's clean sweep in the SUV and midsize segments signals strong support from German car enthusiasts, especially notable in a market dominated by domestic manufacturers. All three winning models were on display throughout the weekend, giving an estimated 1.5 million visitors a closer look at the Italian brand's design and engineering. While the Italian marque has faced stiff competition in recent years, particularly in the growing SUV market, this recognition shows that the brand's distinct approach continues to resonate. With a reputation for sporty performance and bold styling, the Giulia, Tonale and Stelvio each represent a different slice of the Alfa Romeo experience, yet all share the same core identity that the company has cultivated over more than a century.
