Townshend Resists The Pressure For First Win
With fastest laps from the first race defining grid positions, it was Ajay Giddy starting on pole position for the second time today as he lined up alongside Winter class rival Townshend on the front row. Trophy Series points leader Lee Zeltwanger would line up alongside Matt Day on the second row with Corban Sprague and Antal Sabo completing row three. As the lights went out it was Townshend who made a flawless getaway, leapfrogging into the lead by the first turn and leaving Giddy to fight off the attentions of a raging pack behind that included Zeltwanger, Sabo, Sprague and Day. Giddy was able to close up on Townshend on the straights, but the daring late braking of Townshend was enough to keep Harry ahead lap after lap. His task seemed a little easier when Giddy fell back into the clutches of Zeltwanger late in the race, but Townshend had his eyes fixed on the prize and duly came home to his first ever win in a Toyota 86. 'It was an awesome race,' said Harry on the podium. 'I knew I had to get away well and not make any mistakes at all and still hope I had enough speed to win but it all came good. Behind Townshend, the battle was resolved right at the end in favour of Zeltwanger, while Giddy backed up his morning win with another podium. Sprague and Day battled throughout but would finish fourth and fifth while series newcomer Sabo rounded off an excellent first weekend in the category with sixth place. The field was completed by Nathan Grammer, Toby Elmiger and Noel Simpson. Zeltwanger has extended his lead in the Trophy Series points table, while Townshend now assumes the top spot in the chase for the Winter Series class. Quadrophenia on The Royal Mile
The cast of Quadrophenia took to the Royal Mile on Tuesday to promote the show which runs at the Festival Theatre until Saturday. Liam Rudden writes in his Must See Theatre for June about the show: 'In 1973, Townshend wrote Quadrophenia. Recorded by The Who, proved an iconic and multi-million selling album, defining a generation and inspiring the 1979 cult film of the same name starring everyone from Phil Daniels to Lesley Ash, Ray Winstone to Trevor Laird, Sting to Adam Ant and not forgetting Toyah and Gary Shail. If that cast seemed like an incendiary mix at the time, now Sadler's Wells, with Townshend, have reimagined it as an explosive dance production. 'A large cast of exceptional dancers will introduce new audiences to troubled mod Jimmy's story, while remaining true in spirit to the much-loved original. Steeped in the mythology of the 1960s – sharp suits, soul music, vespas and parkas – Quadrophenia's themes of lost youth, rebellion, search for belonging and hunger for social change are just as urgent today. Bob Dylan, 83, Sends Hilarious 80th Birthday Message to Fellow Rock Legend
When iconic guitarist for The Who, Pete Townshend, turned 83 this week, there was another legendary rocker waiting to welcome him to his ninth decade on the planet: 83-year-old Bob Dylan. Dylan took to X to wish his fellow Grammy winner a happy birthday on Monday, May 19, writing, "Happy birthday Pete. Who's the new boss? Is he like the old boss? Have you met him yet? Say hello to Roger.' As fans the world over know, Dylan's message was a witty reference to the iconic Who song 'Won't Get Fooled Again" — written by Townshend — which features Roger Daltrey singing the lyrics, 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.' Music lovers knew exactly what Dylan was talking about, with one person quoting "The Seeker," a song by The Who that name-checks the "Like a Rolling Stone" singer: "I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles, I asked Timothy Leary, but he could not help me either." Another fan shared a pic of Townshend and Dylan posing from what appeared to be the '80s writing: "Fashion icons." Townshend and Dylan have praised each other's talents over the years, with Townshend even crediting Dylan for helping to inspire the classic Who song "My Generation." '(He) definitely created a new style of writing," Townshend said, per Far Out Magazine. "Dylan was the one who I think got the message across to The Beatles. (That) was that you can write songs about subjects other than falling in love.'

The Who haven't even launched their recently announced North American farewell tour, but things haven't exactly been going smoothly in the lead-up to the final run. Now, singer Roger Daltrey is questioning if he even wants to tour with 'half-hearted' guitarist Pete Townshend. As previously reported, the legendary rock band fired, re-hired, and then re-fired longtime drummer Zak Starkey, replacing him with Daltrey's solo drummer Scott Devours. If that weren't enough, Daltrey has expressed disappointment in recent quotes made by Townshend. Get The Who Tickets Here In an interview with the UK's Sunday People, Townshend said, 'The Who has gone on a bit too long with two of us dying. It does sometimes feel like flogging a dead horse.' As the Daily Mail reports, that irked Daltrey, who responded, 'If Pete doesn't want to tour, I don't want to be back with The Who on the road, at 81, with someone who doesn't want be there — if that's what he's saying.' The singer added, 'I won't do it with someone who is half-hearted about it. But, you know, every dog has its day and it was a wonderful ride.' Hopefully, Daltrey and Townshend can join together with the band before they hit the road this summer. The farewell outing, dubbed 'The Song Is Over Tour,' is still scheduled to kick off August 16th in Sunrise, Florida, and run through September 28th in Las Vegas. The Who Reinstates Zak Starkey as Drummer After Resolving ‘Communication Issues'
Zak Starkey is officially back in The Who. On Saturday (April 19), the band's legendary guitarist Pete Townshend took to social media to announce that Starkey — Ringo Starr's son and the iconic group's drummer for nearly three decades — had been reinstated after what he described as 'communication issues.' Who Backs Zak! He's not being asked to step down from The Who,' Townshend wrote on The Who's Instagram account. 'There have been some communication issues, personal and private on all sides, that needed to be dealt with, and these have been aired happily.' The announcement comes just days after Starkey addressed rumors of his firing, reportedly sparked by singer Roger Daltrey's dissatisfaction with Starkey's performance during a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit show at London's Royal Albert Hall in late March. Townshend elaborated on the situation in his post, saying, 'Roger and I would like Zak to tighten up his latest evolved drumming style to accommodate our non-orchestral line up and he has readily agreed. I take responsibility for some of the confusion. Our TCT shows at the Royal Albert Hall were a little tricky for me. I thought that four and a half weeks would be enough time to recover completely from having a complete knee replacement. (Why did I ever think I could land on my knees?) Wrong!' He continued, 'Maybe we didn't put enough time into sound checks, giving us problems on stage. The sound in the centre of the stage is always the most difficult to work with. Roger did nothing wrong but fiddle with his in-ear monitors. Zak made a few mistakes and he has apologised. Albeit with a rubber duck drummer. We are a family, this blew up very quickly and got too much oxygen. It's over. We move forward now with optimism and fire in our bellies.' Townshend also addressed speculation that Daltrey's solo drummer, Scott Devours, might replace Starkey in The Who. 'As for Roger, fans can enjoy his forthcoming solo shows with his fabulous drummer, Scott Devours, who it was rumoured might replace Zak in The Who and has always been supportive of the band,' Townshend wrote. 'I owe Scott an apology for not crushing that rumour before it spread. He has been hurt by this. I promise to buy him a very long drink and give him a hug.' Starkey later shared Townshend's post on his own Instagram, adding, 'V grateful to be a part of the who family Thanks Roger and Pete xx. Repost from @officialthewho.' The Who's Royal Albert Hall charity shows on March 18 and 20 became a flashpoint after Metro reported that Daltrey grew frustrated during the set and halted several songs, citing issues hearing the band over Starkey's drumming. In an April 16 statement to People, Starkey pushed back, expressing surprise that anyone would have a problem with his performance. 'After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I'm surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night,' the drummer said. 'But what can you do?' He also revealed that he had suffered a 'serious medical emergency' in January, involving blood clots in his right calf. 'This is now completely healed and does not affect my drumming or running,' Starkey noted. Starkey has been a central figure in The Who's live lineup since 1996, when he joined the band for their reunion tour, performing their 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia in its entirety.
