South Africa-born Reg Bamford wins 13th British GC Open title
Cape Town-born Reg Bamford was crowned British GC Open Championship for an astounding 13th time on Sunday. Bamford beat England's Jamie Burch in the championship final at the Budleigh Salterton Croquet Club in Devon. Bamford, now 57, confirmed on his LinkedIn profile page that there 'was still life in this old dog'. 'I won my 13th British Open GC croquet title this weekend! 'After a five year drought, some extra time spent on my new Swing Trainer paid dividends. 'Eight of the players in the last 16 were under 30 years old, so the competition is getting fierce. 'There's still life in this old dog – my 50th year of playing this great game!' Bamford concluded. The Swing Trainer that Reg Bamford referenced is still in its development stage and isn't yet available to the public – but is coming soon. It's the first of three croquet products – the others being a high-spec mallet and an aiming target device – that he hopes to make available to the general public before the end of the year. The purpose of the Swing Trainer is to groove one's swing through repeated use – the key to continued success in any sport. Bamford's brief to his design/manufacturing team was to create a Swing Trainer that achieved four requirements: Weighed no more than 5-7kg Could be assembled in under 5 minutes Could be transported easily (including on an international flight) Was so beautiful you wanted to lick it! Bamford was thrilled to confirm that they're close to achieving all four! The Swing Trainer will go into production once the new modifications have been tested (an updated prototype is coming in the next couple of weeks) and when they've ironed out their supply chain. Bamford expects that it will then be available for sale – to individuals and clubs – by the end of 2025, making for the perfect Christmas present. His name is synonymous with world croquet, having first competed at the highest level in the mid-1980s. Bamford remains the only player to have won both versions of the World Championships (Golf Croquet and Association Croquet) and held both titles simultaneously in 2013. Bamford has won the Association Croquet World Croquet Championship five times (2001, 2005, 2009, 2012 and 2020), and the WCF World Golf Croquet Championship twice (2013 and 2017). He has won the British AC Open Championship 12 times – and the British GC Open Championship 13 times now – the premier events in the UK of each code. He was ranked 29th in the 100 Best Sportspeople in the World for the year 2020 by Sports Pedia. Earlier this year Bamford captained the South African national team to a creditable sixth-place finish at the World Team Croquet Championships Tier 1 in Tasmania in Australia in February. The main aim for the team was to avoid a relegation battle for eighth place – and that they managed to achieve in fine style. As a result, 'AmaCrockoCrocko' will remain in the Tier 1 top division for at least another four years. Off the sporting field, Bamford is a qualified Chartered Accountant having completed his articles at Deloitte South Africa in 1992. Now based in London, Bamford went on to establish Sable International, a multi-service firm helping expatriates with financial, immigration, and property services across three continents. The company currently employs over 200 staff globally. Horse Power: Onesmoothoperator can win the Northumberland Plate again at Newcastle
ONESMOOTHOPERATOR can secure victory in the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (GBBPlus Race) (3.15pm) for a second successive year at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon. The seven-year-old won the 'Pitmen's Derby' to give Newcastle-born trainer Brian Ellison a long-awaited first win in his 'home' race – the feature of the eight-race card at Gosforth Park. The last horse to win the Northumberland Plate twice was Tominator in 2011 and 2013 although in recent years very few horses have tried to win the prestigious two-mile handicap after their success with 2014 hero Angel Gabriel the most recent when he finished fourth, beaten less than two lengths, in 2015. And although Onesmoothoperator is 12lb higher than for his win in the North East 12 months ago and despite having scored just once more in eights starts since, he can triumph again. Advertisement Ellison's seven-year-old, who also won the November Handicap over 1m4f at Doncaster in November 2023, has run well in several races around the globe since giving his trainer that special 'home' win. Onesmoothoperator won the Group Three Geelong Cup in Australia last October before running reasonably well to be 12th in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington the following month. He also finished seventh, third and fifth at Group Three and Group Two level in Meydan earlier this year. He was third to subsequent Ascot Gold Cup third Dubai Future in February and fifth in a Group Two contest over 1m4f the following month. READ MORE: Arsenal legend makes controversial claim about Liverpool £200m transfer business READ MORE: Wilfried Zaha makes Everton transfer admission after failed £50m bid and club statement He has clearly been aimed at a return to Gosforth Park, having been off the track since. This two-mile trip on the synthetic surface at Newcastle clearly brings the best out of Onesmoothoperator and despite carrying top weight he may be able to repeat his biggest career success of 12 months ago. Advertisement Others in with a chance of victory include Irish raider, the Tony Martin-trained Zanndabad; James Owen's Chester Cup hero East India Dock; and Pappano – from the all-conquering Willie Mullins' stable. SPYCATCHER can come out on top in a fascinating renewal of the Group Three Jenningsbet Chipchase Stakes (2.10pm). Liverpool FC fan Karl Burke's seven-year-old has been a solid performer at this level over recent seasons and won a similar contest, the Group Three Prix De Meautry Stakes at Deauville last August. He landed the Listed Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster on his seasonal return and wasn't too far behind Ten Bob Tony stepped up to seven furlongs in the Betfred John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock Park last month. The drop back to six furlongs and in a race in which he was a neck runner-up two years ago, Spycatcher can return to winning ways. James Fanshawe's Kind Of Blue, the Owen Burrows-trained Alyanaabi and Ferrous – from the Jack Channon stable – all rate as dangers to Spycather's hopes of success. Sir Mark Prescott's winning machine GODSEND can bring up a five-timer in the Jenningsbet Festival Northumberland Vase Handicap (Consolation Race For The Northumberland Plate) (GBB Race) (2.40pm). The four-year-old has won five of his last six starts and just missed the cut for the Northumberland Plate. But in this consolation, following another victory over two miles on his seasonal return at Nottingham last month, Godsend can score again. Advertisement STRIKE RED can bounce back and land his customary summer success in and win the Jenningsbet 200 Shops Nationwide Handicap (1.40pm). Richard Fahey's six-year-old may not have won as much as he probably should, but invariably lands at least one big handicap a year. He scored at the Curragh in 2023 and at York last October. Strike Red has run well enough in three starts this season, including when fifth not beaten that far behind the aforementioned Ferrous over course and distance last month. Down to just 3lb higher than his last winning mark, he can go close to another victory. Burke's NATIVE WARRIOR, second at Windsor on his most recent start, can go one better to win the Pertemps Network Handicap (3.45pm). Others who can score at Gosforth Park are Andrew Balding's SANDS OF SPAIN in the Pertemps Education Network EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race)) (4.25pm); the Ian Williams-trained HALIPHON in the Pertemps Education Network Handicap (Division One (5pm); and recent Redcar winner BILLY BATHGATE in the finale, the Pertemps Education Network Handicap (Division Two (5pm). At York Liverpool FC fan and jockey William Buick could have a good day and he can partner Ed Bethell's recent Thirsk winner PABORUS to victory in the Group Three Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Criterion Stakes (2.25pm). Buick may have already had a winner on George Boughey's hat-trick-seeking CADARN in the opener, the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Mile Handicap (1.55pm). Advertisement The Godolphin number one jockey may also triumph on Charlie Johnston's GRAVITAS in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (4.15pm) and the Charlie Appleby-trained COMMANDING OFFICER in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Novice Stakes (GBB Race) (3.40pm). John and Sean Quinn's course and distance winner JM JUNGLE can score again in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dash Handicap (3pm). While others who can triumph on the Knavesmire are Richard Fahey's course and distance winner YES I'M MALI in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Sprint Handicap (5.25pm); and the David O'Meara-trained WESTERNESSE in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai For Feed Amateur Jockeys' Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (5.05pm). At Chester Hugo Palmer's well-drawn course and distance winner FLAMING RIB – from the nearby Manor House Stables of former Liverpool FC and England striker Michael Owen – can return to action with victory the Manor Car Hire Handicap (3.05pm). Others who can score on the Roodee are Johnston's GHAIYYA and CURRAN in the Horseradish Catering & Events Handicap (3.35pm) and the Going Is Good Handicap (4.45pm) respectively; the Charlie Fellowes-trained unbeaten hat-trick-seeking COSI BELLO in the John Smith's Handicap (4.10pm); and ANGEL OF ANFIELD, from the Tom Clover stable in the opener, the EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB Race) (2pm). Advertisement Cheshire-based handler Palmer can also land the finale, the Next Up July Music Weekend EBF Fillies' Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (5.20pm) with PATAGONIA GIRL. At Windsor Daniel and Claire Kubler's course and distance scorer ANDALEEP can go in again in the Michael Foster Memorial Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (3.25pm). At the Curragh on Saturday, Aidan O'Brien's WHIRL can gain compensation for her narrow defeat to stable-mate Minnie Hauk in the Betfred Oaks at Epsom to get the better of chiefly the Andrew Balding's Kalpana – who was third in the Group One Tattesalls Stakes over course and distance last month – as she steps back down to 1m2f in the Group One Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes (Fillies & Mares) (3.30pm). The Joseph O'Brien-trained course and distance winner TRUSTYOURINSTINCT can also land the Group Three Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai International Stakes (2.55pm). Trainer James Cummings to train in Hong Kong from 2026-27
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. James Cummings has withdrawn his application for the famous Leilani Lodge stables at Royal Randwick after accepting an offer to train in Hong Kong. Cummings flew to Hong Kong on Tuesday to front a press conference this morning in which the Hong Kong Jockey Club confirmed the trainer would move there for the start of the 2026-27 season. It's a real coup for Hong Kong racing to secure one of Sydney's most outstanding trainers. Cummings' tenure as Godolphin's private trainer comes to an end on July 31. He will take a 'sabbatical'' from training before he moves to Hong Kong next year. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'This wasn't a decision I made lightly. With the upcoming conclusion of my exclusive role at Godolphin, I have carefully considered the right path forward,'' Cummings said. 'While continuing to train in Australia was my intention, the opportunity in Hong Kong presented a unique and respected environment to challenge myself and grow further as a trainer. This is a progression to the next stage of my career in a new jurisdiction.'' Cummings said he was privileged to lead a 'talented and committed team' at Godolphin since 2017. 'In deciding not to train next season, I also wanted to be fair to my staff by giving them the opportunity to commit to a long-term role with another stable,'' he said. 'To the owners who had already been forthcoming in their support, I want to express my sincerest appreciation. 'I felt it would be unfair to continue, only to step away and leave the team and yearlings without guidance during a pivotal stage in their development.' Cummings has been reconsidering his future since Godolphin Australia recently made a bombshell announcement that it was moving to a public training model from August 1. The trainer had lodged an application to take over the vacant Leilani Lodge stables at Royal Randwick. The Australian Turf Club's board of directors is due to meet this week to discuss which trainer will be allocated the 60-boxes at Leilani Lodge where Bart Cummings trained so successfully for more than 40 years. An original Hall of Fame inductee, Bart Cummings prepared some of his greatest champions out of Leilani Lodge including Saintly, So You Think, Beau Zam, Shaftesbury Avenue, Sky Chase, Campaign King, Dane Ripper and many others. The nation's leading trainer, Ciaron Maher, and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team are the clear favourites to be given the keys to the Randwick stables which have been vacant since the licence of James's father, Anthony Cummings, was revoked earlier this year. The famous Leilani Lodge stables at Randwick. • Comeback star can give Cummings a Golden send-off in Stradbroke James Cummings is only 37 years of age and has already trained 52 career Group 1 winners including two with his legendary grandfather, Bart. To put this achievement into context, Bart Cummings and Tommy Smith didn't train their 50th Group 1 winner until they turned 45. Chris Waller may rewrite all the training records but he didn't get to 50 big race wins until he was 42. In fact, the only other trainer to reach 50 Group 1 wins before the age of 40 was Lee Freedman who was 38. Cummings has been Godolphin's trainer since 2017 and has been hugely successful for the global racing and breeding giant, preparing 48 Group 1 winners for the 'Blue Army' and more than $200 million prizemoney. Anamoe has been Godolphin's best horse during the Cummings era winning nine Group 1 races including the 2022 Cox Plate and earning Horse of the Year honours in 2022-23. Cummings trained a Golden Slipper quinella in 2019 with Kiamichi and Microphone, and the winners of the Golden Eagle (Colette, 2019), Doncaster Mile (Cascadian, 2021), Epsom Handicap (Hartnell, 2018), Tancred Stakes (Avilius, 2019) and two Golden Roses with Broadsiding (2024) and Bivouac (2019). The champion trainer also enjoyed tremendous success for Godolphin interstate preparing the winners of the All Star Mile (Tom Kitten, 2025), two Australian Cups (Cascadian 2023, 2024), three Newmarket Handicaps (Bivouac, 2020, In Secret, 2023 and Cylinder, 2024), two VRC Oaks (Zardozi, 2024 and Willowy, 2021), two Caulfield Guineas (Anamoe, 2021 and Golden Mile, 2022) and the Stradbroke Handicap (Trekking, 2019). Newcastle preview: Elegant Empress poised to bounce back
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Warwick Farm trainer Jarrod Austin is banking on a drop back in grade and distance to help deliver a confidence boosting win for his handy mare Elegant Empress. The five-year-old resumed with a safely held third behind Photograph at Canterbury and followed up with a fifth behind Apex at her home track after being forced to race wide when the leader Struck Gold stayed two or three horses wide throughout. 'We could have opted to go to softer races in her first couple of runs but I know her first couple of runs up are there among the best of her preparation,' said Austin. 'We elected to run her in town hoping to get that city win with her. 'We have just missed a couple of times now. She ran second at Warwick Farm first-up last preparation to World Alliance and this time around, she ran third at Canterbury on a heavy track. 'I though that was an excellent run. 'I thought her last run was excellent too after coving ground. They were just a bit too good for her on the day.' Elegant Empress comes down from Benchmark 72 races in town to the Cambridge Classic Benchmark 64 Handicap and is also dropping back from 1100m to 900m. 'She has never been over 900 metres, she only raced over 1000 and 1100 metres,' he said. 'I definitely think she will appreciate the 900 metres more than the 1100 metres. It's just a touch too far for her, especially against that quality of opposition in town. 'Plus dropping to the provincials will definitely help her.' Austin is also looking forward to seeing Jewel County back at the races following a setback after her debut run. The three-year-old filly made her debut at Newcastle on April 23 when fourth behind Mignonette. 'I thought she ran really well first-up,' Austin said. 'She had a little setback between runs and we had to give her a couple of weeks off to get over that. 'I was really encouraged by her first-up run and I thought her trial was nice at Rosehill last week.' Jewel County returns in the Air Control Australia Midway 3YO Maiden Handicap (1400m) where she has drawn the outside in barrier 8. 'She is bred to get over a lot further than the 1250 metres she raced over first-up. She actually bred to get a lot further than the 1400 metres this weekend,' he said. 'She will be better when we can step her up to a mile and even further but I think she finds the right race here to kick off again. 'I think she's a great chance. Jewel County hails from one of the great families in the Australian and New Zealand Studbooks. Not only is she by French Derby and English and Irish Champion Stakes winner Almanzor, himself a son of boom sire Wootton Bassett, she is from a sister to Don Eduardo and Peruzzi and a three-quarter sister to Tristalove and Antwerp. Austin, meanwhile, reported that his stable star Terra Mater has come through her first-up run well in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes at Eagle Farm where she finished midfield behind Zaszou. 'I was happy with her run. She put herself into the race from an awkward gate,' he said. 'She hit the front at the top of the straight and for a few strides, I thought she was going to make a real race of it but her condition just gave out late. 'She will more than likely head back to Queensland for the (Listed) Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich on Saturday week.'
