Warwick Farm trainer Jarrod Austin is banking on a drop back in grade and distance to help deliver a confidence boosting win for his handy mare Elegant Empress.
The five-year-old resumed with a safely held third behind Photograph at Canterbury and followed up with a fifth behind Apex at her home track after being forced to race wide when the leader Struck Gold stayed two or three horses wide throughout.
'We could have opted to go to softer races in her first couple of runs but I know her first couple of runs up are there among the best of her preparation,' said Austin.
'We elected to run her in town hoping to get that city win with her.
'We have just missed a couple of times now. She ran second at Warwick Farm first-up last preparation to World Alliance and this time around, she ran third at Canterbury on a heavy track.
'I though that was an excellent run.
'I thought her last run was excellent too after coving ground. They were just a bit too good for her on the day.'
Elegant Empress comes down from Benchmark 72 races in town to the Cambridge Classic Benchmark 64 Handicap and is also dropping back from 1100m to 900m.
'She has never been over 900 metres, she only raced over 1000 and 1100 metres,' he said.
'I definitely think she will appreciate the 900 metres more than the 1100 metres. It's just a touch too far for her, especially against that quality of opposition in town.
'Plus dropping to the provincials will definitely help her.'
Austin is also looking forward to seeing Jewel County back at the races following a setback after her debut run.
The three-year-old filly made her debut at Newcastle on April 23 when fourth behind Mignonette.
'I thought she ran really well first-up,' Austin said.
'She had a little setback between runs and we had to give her a couple of weeks off to get over that.
'I was really encouraged by her first-up run and I thought her trial was nice at Rosehill last week.'
Jewel County returns in the Air Control Australia Midway 3YO Maiden Handicap (1400m) where she has drawn the outside in barrier 8.
'She is bred to get over a lot further than the 1250 metres she raced over first-up. She actually bred to get a lot further than the 1400 metres this weekend,' he said.
'She will be better when we can step her up to a mile and even further but I think she finds the right race here to kick off again.
'I think she's a great chance.
Jewel County hails from one of the great families in the Australian and New Zealand Studbooks.
Not only is she by French Derby and English and Irish Champion Stakes winner Almanzor, himself a son of boom sire Wootton Bassett, she is from a sister to Don Eduardo and Peruzzi and a three-quarter sister to Tristalove and Antwerp.
Austin, meanwhile, reported that his stable star Terra Mater has come through her first-up run well in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes at Eagle Farm where she finished midfield behind Zaszou.
'I was happy with her run. She put herself into the race from an awkward gate,' he said.
'She hit the front at the top of the straight and for a few strides, I thought she was going to make a real race of it but her condition just gave out late.
'She will more than likely head back to Queensland for the (Listed) Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich on Saturday week.'

Tony Gollan filly Formula Rossa makes late winter carnival return in Bruce McLachlan Classic QTIS 2YO Handicap at Sunshine Coast

Formula Rossa was beaten out of sight when last seen in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic, but Tony Gollan is looking forward to her return on Saturday as he eyes her off as a potential summer carnival contender. The two-year-old filly didn't beat a runner home in the Magic Millions in January when she finished almost 19 lengths off the winner O'Ole in the $3m scamper. Gollan believes she is far better than that and had simply come to the end of her campaign, opting to give filly who cost $340,000 as a yearling a long break rather than bring her back for prime-time winter carnival action. She will be back at the races for the last meeting of the winter carnival when resuming in the Bruce McLachlan Classic QTIS 2YO Handicap (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. There has been some betting support and she is a $10 chance to resume a winner. 'I'm happy with her, she has run well at this track and trip before,' Gollan said. 'She had just come to the end of Christmas campaign in the Magic Millions. 'So I just gave her a good break, I wasn't interested in the early part of the winter with her as I just wanted to take my time with her. 'This is the right sort of time to kick her off. 'She is a nice enough filly, she is still furnishing. 'I think she will have a light sort of preparation this time, with a view towards the summer carnival.' Gollan will also have fast filly Lucky Lass ($15) in the same race and said her racing pattern could be her best attribute. The champion trainer has a big team of runners on the Sunshine Coast, including Felix The Scat who is a $15 chance in the $300,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m). Felix The Scat went for home and looked the winner in the Ipswich Cup, only to be nabbed in the final strides by roughie Flash Aah who will also now contest the Caloundra Cup. 'He probably got there a bit early the other day and he just sort of waited for that other horse to get to him,' Gollan said. 'But I thought his run was easily as good as the other two placegetters. 'It's just a matter of whether that is the right form or whether there is other form that is the right form. 'But Felix is probably at the top of his powers this weekend.' Meanwhile, punters who know Gollan has a happy habit of getting the best out of new acquisitions to his stable should keep a watch on Sunset Dreaming who is a $19 chance in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m). The former Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained mare will be having her second run for Gollan, having finished sixth behind Kin in the Gai Waterhouse Classic where she was beaten just over two lengths. 'I haven't had her long, but I do like her and I think she has made good headway,' Gollan said. 'She was really good in the Gai Waterhouse Classic and she should be better this weekend. 'The 1400 (m) will suit her better but the only negative is that this is a better race. 'She is a knockabout chance with a light weight on her back. 'I would love to see what she does in the next 12 months, she is destined to win Stakes races.'

Nick Kyrgios partners up with adult film star for new OnlyFans content

Nick Kyrgios isn't partaking in Wimbledon, instead the Aussie is using up his time on a different court with an adult film star alongside. The former world number 13 has partnered up with Rachel Starr and fellow adult actor Sophie Stonehouse for brand new OnlyFans content. Watch the biggest Aussie sports & the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. No it isn't spicy content, instead the three are hosting a new series for OnlyFans TV titled Smash City which launched its first season last month. The four-episode show is set to be a pickleball-based competition and will see eight OnlyFans creators compete for $20,000 in a variety of pickleball games. Starr has been promoting the series on her Instagram account, writing that the competition is 'a pickleball competition where one person is left standing at the end'. The new OnlyFans TV show was announced earlier this year and comes after Kyrgios and girlfriend Costeen Hatzi called time on their four-year relationship in April. The pair began dating in 2021 after linking up through Instagram when Hatzi was selling a mirror. Hatzi, 25, appeared to give Kyrgios a social-media slap in March when she posed for a series of photos shared on TikTok. The photos included a watermark caption: 'The photos are good when the photographer isn't secretly jealous'. Kyrgios has at times been the tragic 'boyfriends of Insta' photographer behind some of Hatzi's ritzy influencer posts and selfie shots. It is a sad end to a relationship that had previously sparked marriage and baby rumours. Things took off for the couple less than a year into dating with Kyrgios hinting multiple times his plans to one day marry Hatzi. The duo sent tongues wagging in 2022 following sightings of Hatzi sporting a diamond ring on her engagement finger. Last year Hatzi opened up in a wide-ranging interview where she spoke about the rumours of the two tying the knot and starting a family. She said they've 'definitely had conversations'. 'We love each other. (But) there's no rush. It'll happen when it happens,' she said. 'Nick tells me every day that he wants a baby.'

Black Caviar's family still providing champagne moments for lucky part-owner Neil Werrett

Black Caviar, the mighty mare who will soon be elevated to Hall of Fame Legend status, remains a huge influence on part-owner Neil Werrett's life. Werrett races Semillion, a close relation to Black Caviar, who lines up in the Foundation Female Member Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. He also owns boom colt Nepotism, winner of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes earlier this season and a direct relative of Black Caviar. Champion Black Caviar, the unbeaten winner of 25 races including 15 at Group 1 level, will be announced as a Legend along with another great mare Winx at the Hall of Fame-Horse of the Year ceremony in Brisbane on August 31. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'When you look at the three other horses that are already Legends, Phar Lap, Carbine and Makybe Diva, and the fact Black Caviar and Winx will join them, it's the biggest honour you can give a racehorse,'' Werrett said. 'All the owners of Black Caviar are so thrilled and so excited she is being recognised in this way and we are looking forward to the ceremony. 'Black Caviar has been an amazing mare for us and even though we lost her last August she continues to influence our lives almost every day.'' BLACK CAVIAR, WINX ELEVATED TO LEGEND STATUS TOGETHER The two mighty mares will later this year join Carbine, Phar Lap and Makybe Diva as the only horses afforded Legend status in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Story: @RayThomas_1 ðŸ'‡ — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 23, 2025 Werrett said he got another reminder of Black Caviar's fame when he attended England's prestigious Royal Ascot carnival last month. 'We were walking into Royal Ascot on the first day and near the entrance was this big poster of Black Caviar when she won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes there in 2012,'' Werrett said. 'It's the first thing we saw when we got to the track and for our mare to be on that poster was quite special. 'There's also a Black Caviar Bar at Royal Ascot and we made sure we had a drink at that bar to honour her memory.'' • Clinton Payne's race-by-race tips, analysis for Rosehill Gardens on Saturday Semillion, trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, is no Black Caviar but he's a dual stakes winner of the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes and Listed Takeover Target Stakes and has earned more than $800,000 prizemoney. The rising six-year-old gelding finished only eighth when resuming at Canterbury a month ago but the likelihood of a soft-heavy Rosehill track surface is in his favour. 'We feel Semillion can run well,'' Werrett said. 'He will love the wet track and he is very capable on his day. If he gets a good run I expect he will go close.'' Semillion leads all the way in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes giving @ZacLloydx a winning treble! @newcastleraces_ @HawkesRacing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 11, 2024 • Werrett also provided an update on Nepotism, a leading contender for Champion Two-year-old honours at the Brisbane awards next month after his three-start juvenile campaign that yielded wins in the Group 3 Baillieu Handicap and Group 1 Champagne Stakes. 'I'm hoping Nepotism can beat (close friend) Max Whitby's horse, Cool Archie, for the two-year-old award,'' Werrett said. 'But I would imagine those two might end up clashing a few times as three-year-olds. 'I know the Hawkes team think a lot of Nepotism, he's a very exciting horse and my big hope for the spring carnival.'' A huge win for Nepotism in the G1 Champagne Stakes, coming from last! ðŸ'° @G1TySchil | @HawkesRacing | @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 19, 2025 Werrett and the Hawkes stable was also combining with consistent mare Terrestar in the Leilani Series Final (1400m) at Flemington, and the owner is in the syndicate that races the Chris Waller -trained mare Vienna Princess who starts in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast. â– â– â– â– â– First starter's nod to Villiers winner 2 trials - 2 wins for this unraced Capitalist colt, his most expensive 2YO. The late Tommy Smith trained a gelding named Caesar who won the 1958 Villiers (now The Ingham) Stakes then returned in 1959 to dominate at weight-for-age, winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Chipping Norton (now Verry Elleegant) Stakes, Autumn Stakes and PJ O'Shea Stakes. Leading owner syndicator James Harron, who purchased the modern-day Caesar for $800,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale last year, admitted he wasn't aware of the former topliner of the same name but will be hoping his colt can forge his own reputation on the racetrack. Trainer Peter Snowden has had to wait for the final month of the season to get Caesar to the races but the chestnut colt by Golden Slipper winner Capitalist has been impressive winning successive barrier trials at Randwick and Rosehill in recent weeks. 'We have a very good opinion of Caesar, we like him a lot,'' Harron said. 'He's a lovely big strong horse and we are planning only a light preparation for now and then we will give him a little break with the idea he might measure up to some nice races at the back end of the spring.'' Harron and Snowden combined with another two-year-old by Capitalist, the emerging Gambler, to win at Hawkesbury on Thursday. Rosehill received more than 70mm of rain earlier this week and the track was rated a heavy 10 on Tuesday.
