A 67-year-old Sunshine Coast bus driver was allegedly stabbed in the neck during a violent altercation at a Caloundra bus station. Emergency services were called to Caloundra Station, near Cooma Tce and Latona Ave, at about 11.30am on Saturday following reports of a fight between two men. Police allege the altercation between a 44-year-old Parrearra man and the older man, a working bus driver, escalated into a stabbing, leaving the 67-year-old with serious injuries. According to the Transport Workers Union, he underwent surgery to close the laceration on his neck on Sunday and is now recovering. The 44-year-old man was arrested and charged with serious assault of a person over 60, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of a knife in a public space. He was due to face Caloundra Magistrates Court on Monday. The attack has reignited calls for improved safety measures for Queensland bus drivers, with the TWU demanding the immediate reinstatement of the Bus Safety Forum, a statewide initiative scrapped by TransLink and the Queensland government. In a statement released on Monday, the TWU said the incident was the latest in 'a string of violence' affecting public transport workers, claiming there had been 'countless incidents and five high-profile attacks on drivers and passengers in as many months'. Credit: News Regional Media TWU Queensland director of organising Josh Millroy said this latest assault was 'absolutely devastating'. 'TransLink and the state government's decision to scrap these safety forums, without any consultation with drivers or their union, is a disgrace,' Mr Millroy said. 'Five serious assaults since March and countless more incidents of aggression and verbal abuse shows the urgency of this issue.' He said the forum had been the 'only structured platform' where drivers, unions, operators and government bodies came together to confront issues facing the public transport industry. 'Removing the forum removes transparency. It silences driver voices. It strips workers of a vital avenue to influence decisions that directly impact their safety,' Mr Millroy said. The union said it had written to Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg more than a month ago, but hadn't received a response.

Alstom's SkyTrain Mark V vehicles commence operations in Vancouver
Alstom, in partnership with Vancouver's TransLink in Canada, has announced the commercial launch of the first new generation of SkyTrain vehicles, known as the Mark V. This marks a significant step in the modernisation of Vancouver's rapid transit system, with plans to have several five-car trains operating on the Expo and Millennium Line network by the end of 2025. The driverless light trains represent the SkyTrain network's longest and highest capacity trains to date. With TransLink's additional order for six five-car Mark V trains for the network in 2024, the total number of Mark V cars ordered to date stands at 235 (47 trains). Each Mark V train can transport 672 passengers, which is a 25% increase in capacity compared to the current four-car Mark III models. TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn said: 'The SkyTrain is more than just transportation - it's part of the identity of Metro Vancouver. 'The Mark V trains represent a bold new chapter, with more space, improved accessibility, and cutting-edge features that will enhance every ride. These trains are designed to meet the needs of a growing region, and I am excited to see them deliver a better experience for every customer.' The new trains offer passengers enhanced comfort with improved interior designs, interconnected wagons, new seating arrangements, advanced heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and large digital displays for station information. The Mark V trains are designed, manufactured, and tested at Alstom's facilities in Kingston, Ontario, and La Pocatière and Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville in Québec. The project employed 282 people at its peak, not including the additional jobs and economic benefits generated through Alstom's local supply chain. In a separate development, Alstom has secured a contract worth $2.3bn to supply 316 commuter rail cars to the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, which are part of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority in the US. The contract also includes an option for up to 242 additional cars, potentially raising the contract value by $1.5bn. New Mark V SkyTrain cars hit the tracks
A Mark V SkyTrain is seen in this image handed out by TransLink. The first of a new generation of SkyTrain cars was unveiled Thursday, in what TransLink says is the start of a new era for Vancouver. The first Mark V SkyTrain officially begins running on the Expo Line Friday, and another 46 trains – a total of 235 cars – will be rolled out over the next four years. The public got a chance to tour the new cars at an event attended by federal, provincial and municipal dignitaries. 'From the first SkyTrain in 1985 to this moment right now, I want to welcome you to the future of SkyTrain,' said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn, to a round of cheers and applause. The new trains can fit 25 per cent more passengers inside, or about 140 people, compared to the previous generation Mark IIIs, according to TransLink. They have five cars each instead of four and wider aisles with more standing room. The new cars feature leaning pads and sideways-facing seats in addition to the traditional front-and-back facing chairs. Other perks include new digital displays and better heating and cooling systems. Mark V SkyTrain The interior of a Mark V SkyTrain is seen in this image handed out by TransLink. The windscreens on each car display work from local Indigenous artists, including Rain Pierre of the Katzie First Nation, Atheana Picha and Brandon Gabriel of the Kwantlen First Nation, Darryl Blyth of the Musqueam Nation, and Rose Williams of the Squamish Nation. Officials touted the all-Canadian creation of the trains, built in Quebec and tested in Kingston before travelling across the Trans-Canada Highway to Vancouver. The Mark V will replace the original 80s-era Mark I cars. The Mark III, which began rolling out in 2015, will continue to operate.

Caps on salaries of Metro Vancouver politicians is ‘long overdue' critics say
There are more calls for caps on the salaries of local politicians, after Global News reported some of their earnings. Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie took home nearly $400,000 last year. Municipal Affairs critic Tony Luck said, 'I definitely support the provincial government coming and supporting caps. It's long overdue and it needs to be done for bringing fairness and equity and transparency for the citizens.' Including stipends and expenses, Brodie received $244,000 from Richmond, $64,000 from Metro Vancouver, about $40,000 from TransLink, $24,000 from the South Coast Transportation Authority and $28,000 from the Municipal Finance Authority – totaling $397,482. New Westminster Councillor Daniel Fontaine consolidated the numbers, noting Brodie is 'making far in excess of a B.C. cabinet minister, in fact, he's making almost as much as the President of the United States.' Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West's compensation totaled $376,233 and Delta Mayor George Harvie made $317,401. Those figures include payments from boards, stipends and expenses. He responded, in part, 'Levels of remuneration will be addressed by Metro Vancouver's new Governance Committee…' A Deloitte report for Metro Vancouver has recommended that the province legislate a maximum remuneration threshold for total income from all local government-related appointments. The province says it will await completion of a governance review at Metro Vancouver and plans to be involved. Municipal Affairs Minister Ravi Kahlon said, 'We actually are likely going to put somebody on the governance review to make sure we're keeping an eye on what's happening and we'll see what comes from that discussion, but clearly something needs to happen.' Story continues below advertisement The province says it hopes to see changes this fall, and supports calls for transparency on politicians' earnings. For now, there's no indication this will be provincially mandated.
