Ford recalls 200K vehicles for backup camera display fault
This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Ford Motor Co. has recalled 200,000 vehicles for backup camera display issues, including a blank screen or image retention after shifting out of reverse, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recalled Ford models include the Transit Connect, F-150, Explorer, Bronco Sport, Maverick Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, EcoSport, Escape Fusion Edge, F-250 Super Duty and Corsair. Lincoln models include the Continental, Navigator, Nautilus and Aviator. The model year range of each vehicle varies, but all are between 2018 and 2024. Dealers will update the rearview camera software on the vehicles, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting July 28. The backup camera fault can reduce the driver's view of their surroundings when backing up, increasing the risk of a crash. The report also cites the elevated safety risk due to driver distraction if the camera image remains frozen on the display after shifting out of reverse. According to the recall report, an error in the SYNC 3 software for the infotainment system can cause 'system instability concerns and/or a failure to preserve certain settings across ignition cycles,' which may cause the camera display issues. The fault may cause interference with the vehicles' software log file compression routines, which can use up all of the free memory space of the SYNC Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), the report states. Once all of the module's memory is consumed, the system is no longer able to write new files to the APIM, leading to the camera display faults. Other non-safety related symptoms may also be noticed by customers, including incorrect language settings and/or potential inability to receive software updates. The NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigations notified Ford on Jan. 17 it had received several vehicle owner questionnaires alleging rear-view camera image display problems on 2021-2023 Bronco Sport models. On March 27, the issue was escalated to Ford's Critical Concern Review Group for further review. From April through May, Ford's CCRG reviewed warranty data for all rearview camera system components of the vehicles. The investigation identified an increase in rearview camera image complaints for vehicles produced from March 2023 through November 2023. These production dates coincided with the introduction of a specific SYNC 3 software release, according to the recall report. Ford also reviewed the vehicle owner questionnaires received by the NHTSA, as well as service records related to camera display issues. The investigation discovered that most of these vehicles were successfully repaired with a previous SYNC 3 software update, leading Ford's investigators to suspect that the prior software release was the root cause. A SYNC 3 software update was introduced into production in December 2023 and to the field in August 2024 as part of a customer satisfaction field service action issued on July 22, 2024, to update SYNC software in Ford vehicles. This update corrected the display issues in the vehicles that received it. Ford's In-Vehicle Infotainment team replicated the condition through its own tests, leading the automaker to approve the recall on June 20. The company estimates that almost all of the recalled vehicles have the faulty software. Ford is aware of 1,326 warranty claims potentially related to this condition received between June 2023 and May 2025, which also includes claims that were previously repaired under its customer satisfaction field service action launched in July 2024. Customers will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have a SYNC 3 software flash update performed. Ford has now issued 88 recalls since Jan. 1, extending to over 4.4 million vehicles, according to NHTSA data. It's the highest number of recalls of any automaker. In June alone, the automaker issued 20 separate recalls for over 868,000 vehicles. In May, Ford issued a recall for over 1 million vehicles for similar backup camera display issues, which was also related to APIM software. Among the recalled models were the 2021-2024 Bronco, Ranger and Expedition and F-Series pickups. A second recall was also issued in May for 160,000 Ford Super Duty pickups and SUVs, which was also for backup camera display faults due to faulty printed circuit board connectors. Ford's Intensifying Recall Crisis: A Red Flag for Investors?
U.S. legacy automaker Ford F is racking up recalls at a troubling pace in 2025, raising serious concerns about quality control and rising costs. In just the first five months of the year, Ford issued 81 recalls, exceeding the 67 recalls logged in all of 2024. These actions have impacted over 4 million vehicles, and notably, 80 of them required physical inspections or repairs, as over-the-air updates weren't enough, pointing to deeper quality and design flaws. June was no different, and this month has again brought quality issues that are hard to ignore. At this rate, Ford is on track to become the most recall-prone automaker in the United States this year. The most recent recall involves more than 200,000 vehicles due to a rearview camera failure. A software malfunction can cause the camera to show a blank or frozen image, increasing the risk of crashes. The recall spans a wide range of models—including Explorer, Maverick, Mustang, F-150, and Transit Connect—built between 2018 and 2024. That's just one of the many recalls of late. Recently, it also issued a recall for five units of the 2025 F-150 Lightning due to a brake fluid leak. Late last month, Ford recalled 130,000 Lincoln Aviator SUVs over parts that could detach while announcement came just days after a separate Ford recall was reported by the NHTSA. Ford had recalled 197,000 Mustang Mach-Es due to a rear seat entrapment risk. While Ford is leading the recall count, other auto biggies like General Motors GM and Nissan Motor NSANY have faced issues too—but not on the same scale. Ford's closest peer, General Motors, recently recalled 40,000+ Chevrolet Blazer EVs over potential rear brake wiring corrosion. General Motors issued a recall for airbag inflator defects in several Sierra and Silverado models, but the total impact was under 2,000 vehicles. Japan's Nissan issued a major recall involving models like the Rogue, Altima, and Infiniti QX50 due to engine bearing defects that could lead to engine failure. Still, the total volume and frequency of recalls at Nissan are far below Ford's 2025 numbers so far. While auto giants are facing recall issues, Ford is on a completely different level. And that's what investors need to be paying attention to. Recalls aren't just bad press—they're expensive. From repair logistics and parts replacement to labor costs and dealership reimbursements, each recall eats into margins. Ford has already warned of over $5 billion in losses this year from its EV division. Now, it's also staring down a mountain of potential warranty and recall-related expenses, which could put pressure on its financials even further. Last year, Ford struggled with warranty costs and hoped 2025 would bring relief. Instead, the quality perception around the brand is deteriorating. If these trends continue, Ford risks losing both market share and consumer trust. What It Means for Ford Stock Ford is already under pressure—from EV transition costs to tariff risks—and now, its growing recall count is adding to the strain. While the company continues to roll out new models, those launches risk being overshadowed by ongoing quality concerns. For investors, this isn't just another bump in the road. If Ford can't address these reliability issues soon, the damage may extend beyond margins—it could erode long-term confidence in the brand. Over the past year, shares of Ford have lost around 10% over the past year, underperforming the industry. Yet Another Recall Hits Ford Stock (NYSE:F)
Legacy automaker Ford (F) has suffered a lot these days, with recall after recall hitting the company. Sure, many of these recalls have been a mere software update away from fixing, but others have been much more complex and costly. The latest recall will likely be one of the latter, reports note, as the SYNC 3 infotainment system is now at issue. This did not sit well with investors, who sent shares slumping nearly 2% in Monday afternoon's trading. Don't Miss TipRanks' Half-Year Sale Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Make smarter investment decisions with TipRanks' Smart Investor Picks, delivered to your inbox every week. We had heard, previously, about a fault in the rear-view camera. But this latest fault is apparently much more complex to fix. A fault in the infotainment system could not only cause the rear-view camera to keep an image on the screen even when not in reverse, but could also have the image go completely blank. New reports also note that the system may not respond to software updates, and may even find the language on the display suddenly shifted to one the car's owner does not actually speak. A wide range of models are impacted by this, starting with Transit Connect cars from 2018 to 2022, Mavericks from 2022 to 2024, Bronco Sport models from 2021 to 2024, Escapes from 2020 to 2022, Rangers from 2019 to 2023, and more. Perhaps worst of all, Ford Explorers from 2020 to 2024 are also on the list. And the fix will prove disturbingly complex: the entire SYNC 3 infotainment system must be extracted and replaced with a completely new system. The Unexpected Celebrity Connection But all was not grim for Ford today, as an unexpected celebrity connection was revealed. As it turns out, actor Idris Elba of The Wire fame was actually a former Ford employee. Elba recalled his time at a Dagenham, East London Ford plant as 'grim,' where he worked night shifts, performing the same tasks nightly over the course of two years. Then, just to round out the news, reports also noted that Ford's popular Mustang lineup would be losing two color options forever: the Wimbledon White and the Intense Lime Yellow Metallic colors are out. Intense Lime Yellow was a special option, running $295 extra, and only available on certain models to begin with. Wimbledon White was a special option for the 60 th Anniversary Edition model, which is no longer available. So with that car gone, so too is its special paint color. Is Ford Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on F stock based on two Buys, 12 Holds and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 9.01% loss in its share price over the past year, the average F price target of $9.71 per share implies 15.97% downside risk.

Ford recalls more than 200,000 vehicles with software glitch due to crash risk
The Ford Motor Company announced it is recalling over 200,000 vehicles because of a software malfunction that can cause rearview cameras to fail, increasing the risk of a crash and possibly injury. According to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicle manufacturer is recalling 200,061 vehicles, including certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect; 2019-2020 MKZ, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, and Fusion; 2019-2023 Ranger and Mustang; 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition and Navigator; 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD and Corsair; 2020-2023 Aviator and Transit; 2020-2024 Explorer; 2021-2024 Bronco Sport; and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. The recall says a recently discovered software error could cause rearview cameras to display a blank image or even a frozen image on the display after putting the vehicle into reverse. Ford noted that the blank image from a rearview camera could reduce a driver's view from behind the wheel. If an image continues to be displayed after the vehicle shifts out of reverse, Ford added, the driver may become distracted. Both scenarios increase the risk of crashes, Ford noted. 3 The Ford Motor Company announced it is recalling over 200,000 vehicles because of a software malfunction that can cause rearview cameras to fail.
