Treaty battle back to earn a point against Athlone

Champions Athlone Town were held by a gallant Treaty United at the Markets Field, an outcome that pushes Colin Fortune's side three points clear at the top of the Women's Premier Division. Kayleigh Shine's opener for the visitors was cancelled out by a stunning Katie Lawlee strike. With Cardiff City to come in an historic Champions League tie next week, Athlone could have been forgiven for looking beyond the Shannonsiders. Isabel Ryan replaced Madison Gibson from the draw with Galway United last Saturday, showing Colin Fortune was focused on this tie. Treaty, meanwhile were looking to build on an impressive away success against Cork City. Sean Russell's side have been competitive all season. This is a first draw and perhaps turning defeats into draws will be key to a successful campaign. Treaty had earlier spurned chances through Madelyn Robbins – the second of which saw her race clear following a Isabella Flocchini pass – only for Megan Plaschko to speed out to deny her with a superb save. Less than 100 seconds later, the ball was in the net at the other end. After hesitation in the home defence, the home side conceded a needless corner-kick. Katie Shine's well weighted corner kicked dipped perfectly beneath the bar and was over the line before a defender or attacker could get a touch. It gave the Midlanders the early advantage and appeared to knock United after a high-energy start. Kelly Brady struck the bar from an acute angle on 18 minutes, her left-footed effort perhaps needed to be guided across the keeper, rather than a blasted effort from ten was inches away from doubling the lead on the half-hour, springing the cover only to shoot narrowly wide across Lawlee thundered in an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. The Limerick native waited for a cut Madelyn Robbins cutback and after a wonderful first touch, blasted in off the underside of the bar from just inside the was the first goal conceded by on the road by Athlone, with four successful shutouts a big reason they are top of the a cagey second period, both had half chances to take the spoils. Lawlee again for Treaty, but Athlone came closest. Another Shine corner caused another issue late on, but Athlone struggled to penetrate the defence led superbly by Mara McCleary. Lucy Fitzgerald, however, passed up a golden opportunity in stoppage now prepare for that huge Champions League clash with Welsh champions, Cardiff on Wednesday next. The fixture may evoke memories of their men's side entertaining AC Milan in 1975. The winners will play ZNK Agram, also in Athlone, on 2 August. Treaty United: Liisa Tuomi; Grace McInerney, Mara McCleary, Aibhlinn Cotter, Ayaka Ikeza (Laura O'Neill 90); Kate Jones, Jillian O'Toole, Madison McGuane (Cara Griffin 82), Isabella Flocchini; Madelyn Robbins (Ciara Breslin 65); Katie Lawlee.

Liam Boyce hat-trick eases Derry City past Treaty United in FAI Cup

Treaty United 1 Derry City 5 A second-half blitz, which included five goals, from an earlier lethargic Derry City eased them into the next round of the FAI Cup, with sub Liam Boyce bagging a hat-trick. The first three efforts, all headed finishes via Michael Duffy corner kicks killed the tie, before a couple of late goals enhanced the victory for a side hunting silverware after 2024 Cup final heartbreak. 1,215 were in attendance at the Garryowen venue. The bulk will have been happy with the effort and application by Tommy Barrett's men who eventually ran out of gas against superior opposition. Following a disappointing reverse away to Sligo Rovers last weekend, the Premier Division side eventually nudged ahead of the play-off chasing second tier outfit. But for all their dominance, they struggled to make it tell until Liam Boyce headed them ahead just before the hour mark. City were runners-up last season and Tiernan Lynch named a strong starting XI for this contest. He handed a debut to Dipo Akinyemi, who signed from York City earlier this month. For Treaty, this was not a new venture, having reached the semi-finals only to lose to Derry in 2022. However, Tommy Barrett was only able to call upon Lee Devitt, current skipper Mark Walsh and Fionn Doherty from that Brandywell clash. Playing in a strong defensive low block, the home side adequately dealt with much of what was thrown at them. A half-dozen corners were the main avenue of attack in the opening half, with Ronan Boyce and Alex Bannon both off target. Tripimir Vrljicak drew a smart stop from Maher ninety seconds after the resumption but the visitors struck the front shortly afterwards. From here, there was no way back for the boys in blue. A double change which saw Liam Boyce and Hayden Cann introduced, reaped immediate dividends. Boyce climbed highest for head home Duffy's 59th minute corner and he found the top corner. Tommy Barrett will be left scratching his head when, just over ten minutes later, Duffy's deep set-piece was met by Scot Alex Bannon for 2-0. The pick of the goals came when Duffy's next delivery found Boyce, who from a testing angle connected wonderfully to loop a header beyond the home rearguard. Devitt pulled a goal back with an emphatic finish ten minutes from time, but Boyce struck for his hat-trick with five to play. Chambers fouled the former Hearts attacker and he converted to seal a memorable cameo. Further gloss was added soon after with Danny Mullen getting in on the act. Treaty United: Chamers; O'Connor, R Lynch, M Walsh (C) (Martin 77), B Lynch; Conroy (Byrne 77), Healy (Healy 89); Murphy, Devitt, Wilson (Cunningham 65); Vrljicak (Ferry 77). Derry City: Maher; R Boyce (Benson 77), Bannon, Connolly, Todd; Whyte (L Boyce 56), O'Reilly, Diallo, Duffy (Frizzell 77), Ferguson (Cann 56), Todd; Akinyemi (Mullen 70). Referee: Lucas Keating.

Mark Byrne the hero as Cobh suffer last-gasp defeat

LOI First Division: Treaty United 2 Cobh Ramblers 1 Cobh Ramblers' hopes of landing a First Division title have been dealt a blow following a 2-1 defeat to Treaty United at the Markets Field. Mark Byrne's strike minutes from time proved decisive as Treaty emerged victorious and the Rams were left to rue numerous missed chances. It's a missed opportunity for Cobh who could've trimmed the gap between themselves and leaders Dundalk, especially after the Lilywhites suffered defeat to Bray Wanderers. Sloppiness from Cobh almost gifted the hosts the lead two minutes in. Lee Devitt intercepted Shane Griffin's pass before curling his shot wide from inside the box. Excellent goalkeeping from Corey Chambers denied Cobh the opening goal on the stroke of half-time. Niall O'Keeffe collected Shane Griffin's corner kick and his volleyed effort was repelled by the Treaty shot stopper in impressive fashion. Cobh fell behind five minutes into the second half. Connor Wilson scored with a first-time effort after collecting Colin Conroy's perfectly-weighted cross inside the box. The visitors restored parity on 57 minutes as Cian Murphy scored his seventh goal of the season. The striker collected a long ball and calmly fired low to the net beyond the onrushing Corey Chambers. Cian Murphy could've added a second goal for Cobh on 74 minutes; his glancing header went wide after connecting with Cian Baragry's right-wing gross. Cobh threatened to score again six minutes later. John O'Donovan teed up Whelan but the latter couldn't direct his diving header on target. Brian Cunningham came on for his Treaty debut midway through the second half and was the architect for the winning goal three minutes from time. He found fellow substitute Mark Byrne unmarked inside the box and the latter found the top corner of the net with a curling shot. Joe Hanson could've embellished Treaty's victory right at the death, however his 20-yard effort trickled wide. Treaty held on for a precious win nonetheless.

"We believe he is a goalkeeper with a really positive profile and a lot of potential. We look forward to working with him and helping him continue his development." Treaty United manager Tommy Barrett told the Limerick Post: "It's a fantastic opportunity for Michael and we wish him all the best. Michael has been great for us and has all the attributes to be a top keeper, great personality, great athleticism and he works really hard at his game. Speaking to RTÉ, Dike revealed that he had been offered trails at the Premier League side, saying "I have been there a few times on trials and stuff like that and I enjoyed it and got offered a contract so I'm really happy. It's everything I have ever dream of, really exciting, a new chapter." He was thankful for his time at Treaty, saying "The club has given me a good pathway I started with the academy and then had a little breakout year last year and made a couple of games. "The shootout was by far my favourite moment as a Treaty player, the adrenaline saving the first one, going for the second one and saving that and then winning the shootout."

Treaty United teenager Michael Dike signs deal with Brighton

Republic of Ireland Under-19 goalkeeper Michael Dike has signed a permanent deal with Brighton and Hove from Limerick-based outfit Treaty United. The 18-year-old penned the deal this week with the English Premier League club for undisclosed terms and will join the Seagulls' Under-21s squad. Dike explained he visited Brighton on trial and has since been offered a contract. "I have been there a few times on trials and stuff like that and I enjoyed it and got offered a contract so I'm really happy. It's everything I have ever dream of, really exciting a new chapter," he said. Dike made his senior debut for Treaty United aged 17 in March last year, coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 away victory over Kerry FC. "The club has given me a good pathway I started with the academy and then had a little breakout year last year and made a couple of games," he added. The netminder then went on to make ten appearances for United in the 2024 season and he earned his first call-up to the Irish Under-19s in March. His favourite moment though was at aged only 17, saving two penalties to help Treaty edge past Kilbarrack in the FAI Cup. "The shootout was by far my favourite moment as a Treaty player, the adrenaline saving the first one, going for the second one and saving that and then winning the shootout." Dike previously played with Caherdavin Celtic and Limerick FC and was late in converting to nets, having previously played outfield. — Brighton & Hove Albion Academy (@BHAFC_Academy) June 25, 2025
