Red Sox place Hunter Dobbins on injured list with torn ACL

The Red Sox don't need a fifth starter again until July 22, the second game of their series at the Phillies after the All-Star break, so they have time to decide what to do. Their other in-house option is Tanner Houck, whose minor league rehab assignment is set to expire next week. He has been out with a right flexor pronator strain for two months. Masataka Yoshida missed the buzz of the ballpark while away from Red Sox
On the first day of their new roster alignment, the hot-hitting Ceddanne Rafaela began the game on the bench. Manager Alex Cora said the team has discussed starting him in the infield at times to help alleviate the outfield logjam, but they haven't decided if they actually will do it. Enter Email Sign Up In recent weeks, Cora has resisted that idea because Rafaela is so good in center field and because he feels leaving him in one position makes it easier for Rafaela to play well. Advertisement 'He's been running around for a while,' Cora said. 'I know he's been swinging the bat well. One day on the bench is not going to stop him from hitting. You actually avoid him getting tired. 'We're going to mix and match . . . Everybody is on board. Everybody understands what we're all about, what we're trying to accomplish and there are no complaints.' Advertisement Cora listed four members of that group, which will form a rotation of sorts: Yoshida, Rafaela, Jarren Duran (started in center field Wednesday), and Wilyer Abreu . Notably not included was rookie Roman Anthony , who is in a different category and who made his Fenway Park left field debut in the finale against the Rockies. 'He's playing,' Cora said. 'He'll get off days like everybody else, but he's playing most of the games.' A big factor in the playing-time decision-making, at least in the near future: Giving Yoshida a chance to 'get going' at the plate, Cora said. He played through a right shoulder injury last year, then had surgery to repair his labrum in October, then navigated a series of setbacks. Finally healthy, Yoshida said he is able to finish swings pain-free, which was not the case previously. That may well yield an even better version of Yoshida than what the Red Sox saw previously. 'You can see it in BP. He's backspinning the ball again, the way he did in '23,' Cora said, referencing Yoshida's rookie season. 'Now, I think he's going to get back to that where it counts, look for pitches in his honey hole, and drive it.' Yoshida said he is 'stronger than ever' — and lifting weights with more intensity than normal over the summer. 'As far as the swing goes, not a problem,' he said. 'It all comes down to applying that [increased strength] to the game.' To clear a spot for Yoshida on the active roster, the Red Sox sent utility man Nate Eaton — their leadoff hitter the previous four days — to Triple A Worcester. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, they transferred reliever Nick Burdi (hip problems) to the 60-day IL. Advertisement Bregman gets closer Alex Bregman (right quad strain) remains on track to return from the injured list late this week, which is apparently not at all a surprise to Cora relative to expectations when Bregman got hurt in late May. 'He was actually shooting for before,' Cora said 'When you set your mind on something, a goal, and you put in the effort and you trust the people around you — our trainers are really good — good things happen. 'He hasn't had any setbacks. He's been on point with every treatment. Very vocal when he needed and compared it to what he went through in '21, and he's been very honest about it. I trust our medical staff, strength and conditioning, I trust all those guys over there. I trust the player too . . . If we decide it's this weekend, it's because everybody feels like he's ready.' As the rotation turns They haven't announced a fill-in for Friday, but it likely will be Hunter Dobbins , who is due to return from a strained right elbow. Does Cora have a preference on whether 'My preference is probably not Rob [ Manfred's ] preference,' Cora said, 'but we'll see.' Clock ticking on Houck Tanner Houck (right flexor pronator strain) made a sixth rehab appearance Wednesday, allowing one run and three hits in 4⅓ innings with Worcester. He struck out six, walked two, and threw 76 pitches. Advertisement His 30-day rehab clock is due to expire at the end of the All-Star break, so the Red Sox have to decide what to do with him. Trevor Story, with legs ‘kind of fresh,' wants to steal more bases than ever
Story has been pushing it on the basepaths lately, and to great success. After swiping his 14th bag in the second inning, a small piece of his 4-for-5, four-RBI, three-run day, he is one shy of Jarren Duran and David Hamilton for the team lead. 'Because I'm not just trying to be a merchant out there and take unnecessary chances. It's important to have a good percentage there.' Advertisement Kelly returns, sort of The Red Sox made an unusual move Friday when they put Zack Kelly on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Monday) with a right oblique strain. Kelly exited with a tight oblique last Sunday and got an MRI on Monday. After it apparently showed nothing significant, the team optioned him to Triple A Worcester, clearing a spot for Jordan Hicks . But Kelly hadn't pitched since. Because he sustained the injury while in the majors, the demotion to the minors was rescinded. While on the IL, he will continue to earn big league salary and service time. Kelly has a 5.56 ERA in 17 appearances this year. Yoshida's first impression A first-hand report on Masataka Yoshida's recent practice at first base? 'Pretty smooth,' said Iggy Suarez , Triple A Worcester's bench/infield coach. 'It's pretty cool to see that. It's not in-game reps, but seeing the footwork, catching it clean, smooth throws to first base and second base, it's been pretty good. He knows it's a lot, but he can do it. I think so. 'He said it himself: In-game could be different. But … not being a normal first baseman, that's hard to do.' The outfielder, who joined Double A Portland to continue his rehab assignment Friday, has been working out at first so that he can be an emergency option upon returning to the majors, manager Alex Cora said. 'There's no panic to him, which is good,' Suarez said. 'So who knows? We'll keep getting him out there, get some reps, and whenever they tell us to get him out there, we will. But again, my impression on the first two days, I'm impressed. Pretty good. Not that I expected the worst, but I feel like he can handle himself.' Whitlock had appeared in one game the previous 11 days … Washington's Josh Bell was credited with a single when his ground ball, hit pretty much right at Hamilton, skipped past the second baseman and into right field. The ball came off Bell's bat at 106 miles per hour … While some of the Sox toured the White House and met President Trump on Thursday, others visited the National Zoo, part of the team's family-trip activities. Alex Bregman eager to return, says ultrasound shows he's ‘healing exceptionally well'
He said an ultrasound on Sunday showed he's 'healing exceptionally well,' and backed that with an aggressive day of straight-line running on Monday. He's resumed hitting, fielding, and throwing. Though Bregman said he'd defer to the team for a timetable on the next steps, he also suggested that his recovery continues to significantly outpace what he experienced in 2021, when he missed 10 weeks because of a comparable left quad strain. 'This is a lot of weeks ahead of what we predicted,' said Bregman. 'We're kind of taking it day-by-day when it comes to that, because obviously you don't want to rush it too much, but we're very far ahead of where we thought we'd be at this point.' The third baseman, who was hitting .299/.385/.553 with 11 homers, said it's possible he could get activated and build his workload in the big leagues, a sort of midyear version of spring training. Advertisement 'I think all options are on the table, really, whether it's going on a rehab assignment or not going on one, and just going straight to playing up here and maybe kind of easing the way back in at this level,' said Bregman, who didn't rule out the idea of coming off the injured list before the All-Star break. 'It's honestly whatever they want me to do.' Advertisement Manager Alex Cora suggested Bregman's self-assessment should come with a proverbial grain of salt given his desperation to return to the field. Still, Bregman is close enough that he believes he may soon go from spectating to contributing. 'We have a great chance to win here. We have guys that are very capable of winning at this level and winning for a long time at this level. We've just got to play better. It's that simple,' he said. 'I'm looking forward to getting back and doing my part.' Garcia recognized Outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia , the No. 6 Red Sox prospect by Baseball America, will represent the organization at the All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta. The 22-year-old is hitting .275/.359/.486 with 12 homers, including .292/.363/.569 with nine homers in 33 games since being promoted to Triple A Worcester. He's also shown stylish glovework in the outfield. 'Everything is smooth — suave,' said lefthander Chris Murphy , who'd been playing with Garcia in Worcester in recent weeks. 'He's making Willie Mays catches. I gave up one the other day and was like, 'That might be a double, the way he's jogging to it. Is he playing it off the wall?' Then he [caught it] over his shoulder.' Offensively? 'Bat-to-ball is there and the power is there, too,' said Murphy. 'Good ballplayer.' 'Garcia is a complete player,' added Cora. 'We're very proud of him.' Yoshida joins Worcester Masataka Yoshida will start a rehab assignment on Tuesday for the WooSox. Cora said Yoshida is expected to DH for two games and then play the outfield on Thursday. With the WooSox hitting the road on the Fourth of July, Yoshida is likely to continue his rehab over the weekend with Double A Portland. Advertisement Buehler baffled Though Walker Buehler has a 10.38 ERA in his last six starts, Cora reiterated that the righthander is on track to make his next start Saturday in Washington. The manager talked with the pitcher on Sunday evening — afterallowing four runs in four innings — and the two eventually agreed that his stuff has been more promising but a lack of execution and command has led to awful results. 'We are close. We see glimpses,' said Cora, who cited an inability to close out batters in two-strike counts as a key shortcoming. 'We'll keep working. We're not giving up. This guy means a lot to us. We made a huge commitment in the offseason. He bet on himself. Right now, it doesn't look like [he's pitching to expectations] but I truly believe it will.' … Righthander Jordan Hicks was activated from the injured list. The hard-throwing reliever will be deployed late in games. 'He's been there, done that. We'll use him in the back end,' said Cora. To make room for Hicks, the Sox optioned righthander Zack Kelly (5.56 ERA, 24 percent strikeout rate) to Triple A … Marcelo Mayer , who was away from the team over the weekend, returned from the bereavement list. Nick Sogard was returned to Triple A … Righthander Hunter Dobbins threw a bullpen session on Monday, a possible prelude to a rehab assignment … Prior to Monday's game against the Sox, the Reds placed righthander Ian Gibaut on the IL with a right shoulder impingement and recalled righty Joe La Sorsa from Triple A.
