Detroit Lions' Defensive Starter Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery

Injuries were a major factor in the Detroit Lions' season last year. While it's hard to take issue with how the regular season resulted in a 15-2 record and the first seed in the NFC Playoff hunt, it became clear that the Lions were too decimated on defense to stop a fast-paced Washington Commanders team led by superstar Offensive Rookie of the Year winner Jayden Daniels. With stars like Aidan Hutchinson sidelined for the playoffs, fans can't help but wonder how much further the Lions could have gotten. Unfortunately, the 2025-26 season is set to kick off with a similar tune as last season in Detroit. According to Lions head coach Dan Campbell, starting defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike had to have a 'significant' season-ending surgery involving an ACL tear. While he will be missed, Campbell admitted, 'It needed to be done.' Onwuzurike suited up for 16 games last season, where he made 10 starts. He was a key part of a Lions defense that allowed the seventh-fewest points per game last year. While Onwuzurike may be a big loss, the Lions did select defensive tackle Tyleik Williams in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and now he should see an even bigger role as a rookie than many anticipated. Lions dl levi onwuzurike out for season with acl surgery, setback for team with ailing alim mcneill

Allen Park, Mich. – Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike is out for the season after having knee surgery – a setback for a franchise that was counting on him to fill in for Alim McNeill. Lions coach Dan Campbell made the announcement on Sunday morning just before his team had the NFL's first training camp practice of the year. The 27-year-old Onwuzurike started in a career-high 11 games last season, including Detroit's loss to Washington in the divisional round. His playing time increased when McNeill had a season-ending knee injury in December. McNeill, who signed a 97 million four-year contract extension last October, is out indefinitely. Onwuzurike's injury gives rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams a chance to play a significant role when the two-time defending NFC North champions kick off the season Sept. 7 at Green Bay. Detroit drafted the former Ohio State standout with the 28th pick overall in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-3 334-pound Williams started 13 games for the national champion Buckeyes and had 46 tackles, including eight for losses and 2 1/2 sacks. The Lions will also lean on 31-year-old defensive tackle DJ Reader and newly acquired veteran Roy Lopez, who started 16 games last season for Arizona and has 50 career starts with the Cardinals and Houston Texans.

Lions' starting DT Levi Onwuzurike will miss 2025 season with torn ACL

Last season, injuries derailed a season with Super Bowl expectations for the Detroit Lions. This season is already off to a troubling start for the Lions' defense. Defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will miss the 2025-26 season with a torn ACL, head coach Dan Campbell announced on Sunday. It was a "significant" injury, in Campbell's words, and Onwuzurike has already undergone surgery to repair the tear. The Lions were already missing defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who tore his ACL in Week 15's loss to the Buffalo Bills last season. He'll begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and could return toward the end of the year. Onwuzurike has struggled with injuries ever since Detroit made him their second-round draft pick in 2021 out of Washington. He missed the entire 2022 campaign with a back injury that required spinal fusion surgery. However, he finally broke through with a solid 2024-25 season, playing 16 games and starting 10. He notched 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and a tackle for loss. Campbell says he's still confident in the Lions' depth on the defensive line. The team drafted Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams in the first round (No. 28 overall), who should start on the interior line alongside DJ Reader. Williams had 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his senior season with the Buckeyes. "You don't like to lose anybody," Campbell said, via the Detroit Free Press. "Certainly, losing Levi, that hurts, but it helps that we've got Tyleik, so we've got a little bit of balance here." "All in all, I think we're pretty good," he added. "I like what we got in that room and really there again, man, we got an opportunity for a lot of guys." Roy Lopez, Pat O'Connor and Chris Smith are expected to contribute at defensive tackle. Meanwhile, the Lions are expected to get Aidan Hutchinson back on the edge, coming back from a broken leg. He should start at defensive end along with Marcus Davenport. The team is also looking at bringing back Za'Darius Smith, whom Detroit traded for last season but eventually cut. Detroit has also been in discussions with veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Check out what Arthur had to say about the Lions: Ambitious "The Lions will get star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who missed 12 games after breaking his leg last season, back this year. They also added a strong replacement for cornerback Carlton Davis III in veteran D.J. Reed. But they lost Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow (retirement) and star coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, who accepted head coach jobs with the Bears and Jets, respectively. Those are big holes to grapple with as the Lions still hope to be in contention for a Super Bowl." recommended Get more from National Football League Follow your favorites to get information about games, news and more

WATCH: Former Ohio State player throws out first pitch at Detroit Tigers game

Now that the NFL draft is over and the first-timers that were selected have gone through rookie minicamp, the entire rosters of NFL teams can get on with the status quo of starting to get other camping opportunities underway, all leading up to fall camp and the start of the season. Former Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams was one of the 14 Ohio State football players taken in this year's draft, and he landed in an uncomfortable spot if you will, up in Michigan with the Detroit Lions when they selected him with the No. 28 pick in the first round. He isn't the first -- nor will he be the last -- former Buckeye to play his professional ball at TSUN (Chris Spielman anyone), but he'll have to make a good impression or perhaps face the wrath of those who loved to root against him in college. Advertisement One way to do that is to make the rounds in the community, and Williams was doing just that over this past weekend by not only attending a Detroit Tigers baseball game but by throwing out the first pitch. It wasn't a seed thrown to the plate, but rather a smooth and soft delivery that at least won't get any viral moments, though it was a bit high. If you haven't seen Williams' first pitch against the Cubs on Sunday, get a look here thanks to the Detroit Tigers' "X" (formerly Twitter) account. There are several former Buckeyes getting comfortable in their new environments and cities in the NFL, and as more of these moments are made available, we'll continue to bring them to you.
