U Mobile teams up with Melaka ICT to accelerate 5G rollout in Malacca

PETALING JAYA: U Mobile, Malaysia's next-gen 5G network provider, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd (MICTH), the state-backed company of Malacca, to accelerate the deployment of its Next Gen 5G network in the state. The MoU reinforces U Mobile's ability to achieve its target of 80% nationwide coverage of populated areas (CoPA) by the second half of 2026. The collaboration will see MICTH providing U Mobile with access to its tower and site infrastructure, as well as comprehensive support to expedite site implementations throughout the state. Both parties will also leverage their respective expertise to establish an efficient process for 5G site deployment, enabling faster and broader coverage expansion. U Mobile chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen said the company has the full support of MICTH as part of its growing list of collaborators who are key to the rollout of its Next Gen 5G network. 'As Malacca's state-backed ICT leader, MICTH plays a vital role in accelerating deployment in the state, supporting our ambition to achieve 80% nationwide CoPA by the second half of 2026. 'Through this MoU, 5G connectivity in Malacca will be enhanced for both consumers and enterprises alike. U Mobile's Next Gen 5G network will also help advance Malacca's digital transformation agenda and drive the growth of its digital economy,' he said. MICTH CEO Dr Nazdiana Ab Wahab said the company values its strategic partnership with U Mobile in accelerating the deployment of 5G in Malacca. U Mobile capex to hit RM3bil for 5G rollout

KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile Sdn Bhd's capital expenditure is projected to rise between financial years 2025 and 2027 (FY25–FY27), potentially reaching a total of RM3 billion, as the company undertakes the rollout of Malaysia's second 5G network, CIMB Securities said. U Mobile posted a net loss of RM722 million for the financial year, a sharp reversal from the RM102 million net profit recorded in financial year 2023 (FY23). The loss was mainly attributed to an accelerated depreciation charge of RM489 million, as the telco shortened the useful lifespan of its telecommunications equipment ahead of its 5G network rollout. "Excluding this, forex losses, and interest costs from shareholders' advances (SHA) and redeemable convertible preference shares (RCPS), we estimate a core net loss of RM19 million versus FY23 core net profit of RM295 million," CIMB Securities said. The firm said U Mobile recorded a 3.4 per cent increase in service revenue for financial year 2024, outperforming both Maxis Bhd and CelcomDigi Bhd. As a result, its mobile service revenue market share (RMS) rose by 0.4 percentage points on a yearly basis to 15.7 per cent. "Excluding SHA and RCPS, the telco company's net debt, including finance leases and vendor financing, fell three per cent to RM2.70 billion at the end of financial year 2024 (FY24)," it said. CIMB Securities noted that U Mobile's capital expenditure in FY24 remained relatively low for the third straight year, amounting to RM189 million, or 5.1 per cent of its revenue. This reflects the telco's targeted 4G investments and continued reliance on Digital Nasional Bhd's 5G network to handle traffic. "Still, the latest Opensignal network test indicates that U Mobile's scores for overall download speed and video and games experience have been improving, although it ranked either third or fourth in these categories among the telcos," CIMB Securities added.

Telecom tower theft disrupts services in Raub, three reports filed

KUANTAN: Police have opened investigations after three telecommunications companies reported thefts of critical components from transmission towers in Raub. U Mobile, Maxis, and CelcomDigi lodged separate police reports regarding missing slot cards, which are essential for processing internet data. Raub district police chief Supt Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahman confirmed the cases are being probed under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. 'The missing components disrupted services as they facilitate data transmission,' he said. Authorities urged the public to share any information by contacting the Raub district police operations room. Meanwhile, State Communications and Multimedia Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal stated that CelcomDigi is restoring services by replacing damaged equipment. 'As of 5.30 pm, repairs were completed in Pekan Dong, Kampung Gesing, and several other locations,' he said in a Facebook update. The vandalism at a CelcomDigi tower in Dong initially disrupted connectivity in surrounding areas. MCMC investigations revealed the tower acts as a hub linking multiple transmission sites.
