File Photo via U.S. Coast Guard/UPI | License Photo July 20 (UPI) -- The number of people missing from Kerr County, the hardest hit after devastating flooding in Texas on July 4, dropped to three after authorities accounted for many who were initially reported missing. The announcement was made Saturday evening by officials in Kerr County and the city of Kerrville, which did not identify the names of the victims who remained to be found. Those who were accounted for were verified to be safe and removed from the list. Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice thanked more than a thousand local, state and federal authorities who searched for more than 160 people believed to be missing after torrential downpours caused the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly. "This remarkable progress reflects countless hours of coordinated search and rescue operations, careful investigative work, and an unwavering commitment to bringing clarity and hope to families during an unimaginably difficult time," Rice said. Authorities are continuing recovery operations to search for the three missing people."Our thoughts remain with the families still awaiting news, and we will continue to stand with them as efforts persist," Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring said in a statement. After the August 2023 Maui wildfire, officials first reported about 1,100 missing persons. By September, DNA testing reduced the death count, and by June 2024, only two people remained missing with the official death toll at 102.

MMEA to sail home new naval asset from US, boosting maritime defence
KUALA LUMPUR: Forty-six personnel from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will depart for Baltimore, United States, tomorrow to take delivery of the former US Coast Guard (USCG) Cutter Steadfast, which is set to become the agency's latest enforcement asset. The acquisition is expected to significantly bolster Malaysia's maritime security, particularly in the South China Sea. MMEA director-general Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah described the mission as a proud milestone for both the agency and the nation. "This is no ordinary voyage. It reflects international recognition of the MMEA's capabilities and professionalism," he said. He also urged the personnel to uphold the nation's reputation during their time abroad. "Maintain integrity and display the highest standards of discipline throughout the mission," he said. Mohd Rosli expressed his appreciation to the government for approving the acquisition of the vessel from the USCG. "Without the government's unwavering support, this mission would not have been possible. It underscores the administration's commitment to enhancing Malaysia's maritime security," he added. Currently, four MMEA personnel have been stationed in Baltimore since May for training and technical inspections of the vessel, as part of preparations for the return voyage. The ex-USCG Cutter Steadfast is 64.14 metres in length and 10 metres wide, with a top speed of 18 knots. It is expected to arrive in Malaysia by mid-November.

USCG 3 A Coast Guard crew member rappelled down to two teens stranded on an Oregon cliffside on Saturday. USCG An MH-60 helicopter was launched from the guard's Columbia River sector to reach the two. Video of the operation shows a Coast Guard member being lowered down to the cliff high atop the rocky coastline and buckling each one separately and pulling them into the chopper. The crew then plucked a member of the Lincoln County Fire Department who was trapped while trying to reach the teens earlier off the ridge and also pulled him on board. 3 The Coast Guard pulled two stranded teens and a local firefighter who had tried to rescue them to safety on Saturday. USCG 'Our air crews frequently train with our agency partner agencies to conduct these rescues in a variety of conditions and terrain in the Pacific Northwest,' Amanda Denning, executive officer of the Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, said in a statement. 'We are extremely happy that we were able to rescue the three individuals and transport them to safety.' New Jersey Coast Guard swimmer rescues nearly 200 people in deadly Texas flash floods that killed 68
A United States Coast Guard rescue swimmer from New Jersey is being called a hero after rescuing close to 200 people following flash floods in Central Texas. Petty Officer 3rd Class Scott Ruskan, 26, was singled out by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for his efforts saving 165 victims as the only triage coordinator at the scene of the floods. "United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and Petty Officer Scott Ruskin (Ruskan), directly saved an astonishing 165 victims in the devastating flooding in central Texas. This was the first rescue mission of his career and he was the only triage coordinator at the scene. Scott Ruskin is an American hero. His selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the @USCG," Noem's posted to her social media account on X. Ruskan said in an interview on "Fox and Friends" that they were in the air when they saw a huge crowd of about 200 kids at a campsite. That is how they decided to focus on Camp Mystic. "Yeah, as far as right now, we've been getting our tasks from higher above mostly from the Army as of right now. But a lot of it has just been large state triages, so we were at Mystic yesterday for a long period of time. We probably got about 200 people out of there alone, and it was just, yeah, we just saw a huge crowd, about 200 kids at a campsite. So, we're like, cool that's where we're gonna go, and we're just gonna get as many people out as we can until they're all gone," Scott told "Fox and Friends." Kerr County Sheriff's Office says that as of 1:30pm Sunday they had recovered 68 deceased in Kerr County. "Among those who are deceased, we have 40 adults and 28 children. Eighteen adults are pending identification, and 10 children also pending identification. At present, there are 10 Camp Mystic campers unaccounted for, along with one counselor," they posted to Facebook. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, they said, and there is a full response from local, state, and national first responders. "We continue to have hundreds of officers, deputies, and support staff working every aspect of this emergency, along with air, water, K9, and other assets conducting search and rescue," the sheriff's office said.
