‘I'll say Sinner, because Alcaraz likes girls': Spaniard responds to Nick Kyrgios' ‘funny' comments at Wimbledon

Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Friday responded to controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios' unsavoury comparison between the Spaniard and world no. 1 Jannik Sinner in a recent talk show. Speaking in a conversation hosted by Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) with French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the 30-year-old Kyrgios shared his thoughts on the Sinner-Alcaraz comparison and who is likely to sustain greatness in the future. 'Who do you think's gonna have a better career, Alcaraz or Sinner? I'll tell you mine first. I'll say Sinner, because Alcaraz likes girls,' said Kyrgios. 'He might get distracted, he might party too much. That's my only thing, whereas Sinner will stay a bit locked in, I think.' 'Sinner is more consistent in general,' added Mouratoglou. 'It's more his mentality. If you look at the season, Alcaraz is losing many more matches than Sinner, so many more. And you think he should not, why? But because he's not always there. Even during the match, he has ups, downs. For that reason, yes.' However, Moratogolou conceded the ultimate comparison will boil down to the head-to-head which Alcaraz leads Sinner 8-4 after his recent epic French Open final jailbreak from two sets and a championship point down in Paris. Kyrgios made his comments shortly after Alcaraz's much-publicised vacation in Ibiza, celebrating his French Open win, and the release of his documentary, 'A mi Manera (My Way),' which emphasises his approach to becoming a champion, including extended breaks from the sport. Nick Kyrgios says Jannik Sinner will have a better career than Carlos Alcaraz: 'I'll say Sinner because Alcaraz loves girls. 😂 He might get distracted. He might party too much. Sinner will stay a bit locked in, I think.' (via @uts_tour_) — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) July 4, 2025 When asked at Wimbledon following his third-round, four-set victory over Jan-Lennard Struff on Friday, the 22-year-old Alcaraz shrugged off Kyrgios' comments. 'They're funny comments, which coming from him, don't surprise me. It's no secret that Jannik always has fewer ups and downs than me. It's something I've been working on. It has nothing to do with the nightlife world,' Alcaraz told the Spanish media at Wimbledon. Dropping another set after five-set first round skirmish against Fabio Fognini, Alcaraz admitted that he had gone through a gruelling test against German Struff. 'His game is suited to the grass with his big serve, and he came in to the net as much as he can. I'm really pleased with everything I fought for but it was stressful. I was suffering in many service games – love 30, break points down. He was pushing me whenever he could. It was tough to survive. I was happy to get that break at the end,' Alcaraz said. The two-time champion will return to Centre Court to face 14th seed Andrey Rublev in the R16 match on Sunday.

Hong Kong to host Ultimate Tennis Showdown, with Zhang, Rublev among stars confirmed

Hong Kong's Kai Tak Arena will host a tennis event with a difference in October, bringing eight of the world's best men's players to town, organisers confirmed on Saturday. Advertisement The city has been awarded hosting rights for a stage of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), a shortened, fast-paced form of the sport with time limits and players encouraged to show their personality. China's top men's player Zhang Zhizhen has been confirmed for the event, along with the world's No 9 and 10, in Russia's Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur of Australia. There will be a total of US$1.1 million in prize money, with Rublev chasing further success in the city to add to his triumph in last year's Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open. Michael Cheng Ming-git, president of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association (HKCTA), welcomed the announcement, made on Saturday at the second UTS event of the year, in Nimes, in the south of France. Taylor Fritz misses Monte Carlo Masters with injury as draw separates Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz

Taylor Fritz, America's World No. 4, has withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters because of an ongoing abdominal injury. 'I aggravated an abdominal injury during my semifinal match in Miami, and I will not be able to recover in time to compete in Nimes this week,' Fritz said in a statement ahead of the event. Nimes, France, is the venue for the latest Ultimate Tennis Showdown (U.T.S.) exhibition, in which Fritz was replaced by Tomas Macháč. Advertisement Missing Monte Carlo, a Masters 1,000 event one rung below the Grand Slams, is much more significant. It follows Fritz's withdrawing from Acapulco in February with the same injury, which has been affecting his right oblique muscle. After losing to eventual champion Jakub Menšík in the Miami Open semifinal, Fritz said that the injury had gotten worse in his quarterfinal match against Matteo Berrettini. 'End of the second set, I felt like I reinjured that thing that I've been dealing with,' he said. World No. 22 Hubert Hurkacz also withdrew from Monte Carlo on Friday, as he recovers from the lower back injury that forced him out of Miami. Both he and Fritz are entered for the BMW Open in Munich, which starts the week after next. The Monte Carlo main draw gets under way Sunday, with Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz placed in opposite halves of the draw. Djokovic is in the same half as defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and world No. 2 Alexander Zverev, with Alcaraz alongside Indian Wells champion Jack Draper in his half.
