Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot won't stick to the game's labyrinthine lore
Over its 30 years or so of zombie hordes, Umbrella Corporation lab leaks, and Las Plagas infections, Resident Evil has amassed one of the most expansive and confusing mythologies in horror. At this point, Resident Evil games bounce around their labyrinthine timeline as often as they change gameplay styles. Fittingly, it has an equally obtuse movie mythology, with Paul W.S. Anderson's long-running series following his muse Milla Jovovich and abandoning the source material in favor of his post-apocalyptic whims. Audiences read Anderson's Final Chapter to the series in 2017, leading to a first shot at a reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, which stuck closer to the games' mythology and we swear came out in 2021. The following year, Netflix released a live-action TV series to join a long-running franchise of Japanese animated movies, a Netflix CG animated series, and a documentary about the unmade George A. Romero adaptation. We have plenty of Resident Evil stuff, and more on the way. Speaking to SFX Magazine [via Bloody Disgusting], director Zach Cregger, who is helming the reboot after finishing his next film, Weapons, has already begun preparing fans for a movie that is nothing like the games. 'I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan,' Cregger said. 'I've played them all. I don't know how many times I've just looped [Resident Evil 4] again and again. I just love it. I'm definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the game. I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.' Still, Cregger says that he doesn't believe he's 'breaking any major rules' by taking 'the title back to its horror roots' with a movie that's more faithful to the tone of 'the initial games,' e.g., more survival horror than a first-person shooting in the Bayou. 'All I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling,' he continues. 'I know that I'm gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.' 'I will also say, I've never seen a movie like it,' he continued. 'It doesn't jump around like Weapons and Barbarian, but it is still unto itself.' As long as there is a master of unlocking, we'll be fine. Resident Evil infects theaters on September 18, 2026. More from A.V. That's about all we know so far, apart from this teaser image that reveals it'll be set in the timeline's early days while the Umbrella Corporation is still around. It's being co-developed by Aniplex Inc and Joycity Corporation, and we'll find out more when the trailer drops at 6PM ET on July 10th, including whether it'll tie into next year's Resident Evil Requiem .

Capcom's 'Resident Evil Requiem' To Revisit Umbrella Corporation & Raccoon City
Capcom's upcoming ninth instalment in its survival horror franchise, Resident Evil Requiem , is set to take the series back to its roots, returning to its original 'overarching narrative' surrounding the Umbrella Corporation and Raccoon City after its two predecessors brought the series elsewhere. This comes from an interview with game producer Masato Kumazawa published on the PlayStation Blog, where he answered various questions surrounding the highly anticipated sequel. According to Kumazawa, the team decided to return to the franchise's iconic setting to commemorate its 30th anniversary, as the title will release three decades on from the original Resident Evil's March 1996 launch. 'In recent mainline titles like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village , the series has explored the broader world of the Resident Evil universe by focusing on incidents involving the Winters family.' Kumazawa explains, 'With Resident Evil Requiem , however, we wanted to return to a story that continues the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation. As the series celebrates its 30th anniversary, we believe Raccoon City is the most fitting setting.' To coincide with the return to Raccon City, the team also wanted to introduce a new character with direct ties to the unfortunate events that occurred there, hence its protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, who was one of the lead characters in the 2003 spin-off Resident Evil Outbreak , which featured episodic storylines of eight individuals as they venture through a zombie-inhabited Raccoon City. 'When creating a story set in the ruins of Raccoon City, we felt it was fitting to have a character with a personal connection to the city itself. In this title, which aims to focus on horror, we introduce Grace as a new, relatable protagonist, who is unlike previous protagonists Leon or Chris.' Kumazawa added. 'By making Grace someone who reflects the player's own vulnerability, we believe players will enjoy a gameplay experience filled with tension and immersion. Grace is a character with a low tolerance for fear, but she grows throughout the story and eventually begins to confront various horrors with courage.' It seems the upcoming title has bold plans to take the series back to where it all began, not only from a story perspective, but from a gameplay one too, as Capcom had also stated how the team experimented with plans to make the game open-world with online elements before changing course, shown in a developer diary video featuring a now-cancelled early version of the title. Series fans will surely appreciate that the team has chosen to stick to what works instead of following industry trends, which, as history has proven, usually leads to disaster. Whether the final game would be more linear, like Resident Evil 2 , or more of an open-zone format like Resident Evil Village remains to be seen as Resident Evil Requiem approaches its release on 27 February 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. Capcom Resident Evil Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil herbs to be sold as herbal teas at Capcom Stores in Japan
By SoraNews24 How many times has this happened to you? You finally put the last playing card in the tiger statue bought by the insane art-collecting chief of police and open the hidden door leading to the diamond-tipped cane that goes into the other weird mechanical statue, only to have a creature with a meter-long tongue drop from the ceiling and claw open your abdomen. If the answer is more than zero, then you most likely appreciate a good herb. Now, thanks to our friends at Umbrella Corporation you no longer need to rummage around alleyway dumpsters and desk drawers to find them. All your favorite colors of herbs can be found at Capcom Stores and Cafes in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Sendai, or online for 864 yen each. First, recover some life with some Green Herbs tea, which is a blend of green tea and spearmint which is sure to refresh and invigorate. Next up, we have some Red Herbs that can finally be used on their own. This tea merges the flavors and aromas of hibiscus, rosehips, and a sweet touch of stevia. It might not serve to enhance other herbs this time around, but it sure will enhance your afternoon. Blue Herbs matches its unique color with the distinct fragrance of moringa and a hint of stevia. It's a firm taste that's meant to represent the poison-resisting effects of blue herbs. Finally, extend your life gauge with the classically clean and elegant chamomile tea which represents the Yellow Herbs of the game. Umbrella Corporation would like to kindly remind everyone that these teas should not be used in place of actual Resident Evil Herbs and there is no guarantee they can heal you from mortal wounds, treat/prevent poisoning, or prolong your life. Doctors are still your best option for all those things. Nevertheless, judging by the reaction in comments online, many people are curious to try some of these. Many also had the obvious thought of anyone who's played the games. 'I wonder what it would taste like if I blended them together.' 'Now I won't have to worry about getting bitten by a zombie.' 'Looks interesting. I want to try some.' 'Seems like they would be more effective if I blended them.' 'They should make some decorative herbs too.' 'I usually only carry First-Aid Sprays.' 'They should have come out with this ages ago.' Making it so the teas could be mixed would have been a genius move for this product. That surely would have taken a lot of research and development to pull off though, so maybe if this run of Resident Evil Herb herbal teas is a hit, they'll go back to the drawing board for that in the next edition. So, be sure to clear out some space in that large briefcase you always seem to have but are inexplicably never seen carrying around to pick up these useful items. I usually ditch the flash grenades since I can never be bothered to use them.
