Capcom's 'Resident Evil Requiem' To Revisit Umbrella Corporation & Raccoon City

Geek Culture9 hours ago

Capcom's upcoming ninth instalment in its survival horror franchise, Resident Evil Requiem , is set to take the series back to its roots, returning to its original 'overarching narrative' surrounding the Umbrella Corporation and Raccoon City after its two predecessors brought the series elsewhere.
This comes from an interview with game producer Masato Kumazawa published on the PlayStation Blog, where he answered various questions surrounding the highly anticipated sequel. According to Kumazawa, the team decided to return to the franchise's iconic setting to commemorate its 30th anniversary, as the title will release three decades on from the original Resident Evil's March 1996 launch.
'In recent mainline titles like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village , the series has explored the broader world of the Resident Evil universe by focusing on incidents involving the Winters family.' Kumazawa explains, 'With Resident Evil Requiem , however, we wanted to return to a story that continues the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation. As the series celebrates its 30th anniversary, we believe Raccoon City is the most fitting setting.'
To coincide with the return to Raccon City, the team also wanted to introduce a new character with direct ties to the unfortunate events that occurred there, hence its protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, who was one of the lead characters in the 2003 spin-off Resident Evil Outbreak , which featured episodic storylines of eight individuals as they venture through a zombie-inhabited Raccoon City.
'When creating a story set in the ruins of Raccoon City, we felt it was fitting to have a character with a personal connection to the city itself. In this title, which aims to focus on horror, we introduce Grace as a new, relatable protagonist, who is unlike previous protagonists Leon or Chris.' Kumazawa added.
'By making Grace someone who reflects the player's own vulnerability, we believe players will enjoy a gameplay experience filled with tension and immersion. Grace is a character with a low tolerance for fear, but she grows throughout the story and eventually begins to confront various horrors with courage.'
It seems the upcoming title has bold plans to take the series back to where it all began, not only from a story perspective, but from a gameplay one too, as Capcom had also stated how the team experimented with plans to make the game open-world with online elements before changing course, shown in a developer diary video featuring a now-cancelled early version of the title.
Series fans will surely appreciate that the team has chosen to stick to what works instead of following industry trends, which, as history has proven, usually leads to disaster. Whether the final game would be more linear, like Resident Evil 2 , or more of an open-zone format like Resident Evil Village remains to be seen as Resident Evil Requiem approaches its release on 27 February 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

'F1 the Movie' Revs To US$144 Million Global Debut; '28 Years Later' Hits Franchise Best With US$103M

Apple Original Films and Warner Bros. Pictures' F1 the Movie is racing towards massive success, garnering a US$144 million global box office over its opening weekend, marking the biggest opening to date for an Apple film. Following along this momentum, Danny Boyle and Sony's post-apocalyptic threequel, 28 Years Later , has also risen to become the franchise's biggest grosser at US$103 million worldwide, after receiving an additional US$13.7 million from 63 overseas markets after its second weekend. The success of F1 the Movie comes as no surprise, owing to the popularity of Formula 1 across the globe, marking the biggest opening weekend for an Apple title across Europe as a region, including topping most markets in Asia. The film also presents the first commercial win for Apple, after notable big-screen underperformers like 2023's Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon , or 2024's Argylle . F1 follows an ageing American racing driver and former Formula 1 prodigy named Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), who returns to the sport after a 30-year absence to save his former teammates' underdog APXGP F1 team from collapse. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski ( Top Gun: Maverick ) and made in collaboration with the FIA, the governing body of F1, and featured real-life F1 teams and drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, who was also a producer. 28 Years Later , on the other hand, marks the third instalment in the 28 Days Later film franchise, and like its namesake, is set almost three decades after the second Rage Virus outbreak as seen in 2007's 28 Weeks Later , and follows survivors Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and his son Spike (Alfie Williams), who embark on a dangerous journey to the mainland from their village community for a coming-of-age ritual. In other box office news, Universal's live-action How to Train Your Dragon continues to fly high, adding US$32 million globally in its third weekend and earning US$454 million worldwide to date. M3GAN 2.0 , on the other hand, saw a downgrade with its disappointing US$17 million launch weekend earnings, falling short of the 2023 original's box office launch of US$45 million globally. Secretlab X ‘Genshin Impact' Collection Shines Spotlight On Xiao, Ningguang, And Wonders Of Liyue

The world of Genshin Impact , the popular role-playing game that put HoYoverse's name on the map, is no stranger to scenic landscapes and memorable characters, with each region boasting their own cultural identity and signature locales. In the case of Liyue, its iconic harbour is but one of the many sights it has to offer, serving as inspiration for the latest rollout of Secretlab collaborations. Marking the first between the two brands, the Secretlab X Genshin Impact collection brings together new chair designs celebrating beloved characters Xiao and Ningguang, alongside a desk inspired by the Lantern Rite Festival. The aesthetic elements are unique to each, taking after their respective influences – the Xiao Edition, for instance, features his Alatus Nemeseos constellation and an embroidery of his Anemo Vision on the side wings, reflecting his true form. At the back, the erupting spears pay tribute to the Vigilant Yaksha's Elemental Burst: Bane of All Evil. The Ningguang Edition, meanwhile, comes cloaked in the colours and patterns of her character, from her Geo Vision to her signature phoenix emblem. Emblazoned on the backrest, the latter is adorned with a motif of gingko leaves, joining the gradient embroidery of the chair's logo that pulls from the Tianquan of the Liyue Qixing's tassel. Additionally, both chairs will retain the ergonomic features of the Secretlab Titan Evo series, such as cold-cure foam for even weight distribution, a pebble seat base with gently sloping side wings, and four-way lumbar support. Adding to the spirit of Liyue is the Magnus Pro Sit-to-Stand Metal Desk, themed after the Lantern Rite Festival. It includes cable management features like a full-length cable tray and an integrated power supply column, and can be paired with a matching desk mat that shows the night view of Liyue Harbour in all its glory, illuminated by the glow of a thousand lanterns, and the Skybracer soaring through the sky. The Secretlab Genshin Impact Liyue Collection chairs start from S$769 each, while the Magnus Pro is available at the starting price of S$984. It will also make its first in-person appearance at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles from 3 to 6 July 2025.
