‘My first priority is to assert myself' – Robert Andrich discusses his Bayer Leverkusen future
Joining Bayer Leverkusen from Union Berlin in 2021, Robert Andrich is now one of the club's longest serving players with 153 appearances across all competitions. The Germany international will be playing under his third coach at the club after Erik ten Hag replaced Xabi Alonso, and while he wants to assert himself, the 31-year-old also can't rule out a departure. Speaking to Bild, Andrich said: 'If I somehow notice that the coach isn't keen on me – you might find that out over time – or that things aren't a good fit, then I have to think about it. But my first priority is to assert myself and be the No. 1 in my position in the starting eleven. That's the only thing that's on my mind.' Advertisement With the arrival of Aleix Garcia and Exequiel Palacios' return from injury, Andrich played fewer minutes (2,930 in the 2023/24 season compared to 2,206 last season) and in a World Cup year, the German wants to be at the forefront of Julian Nagelsmann's plans. As reported in April, Andrich has already thought about leaving Bayer Leverkusen to enhance his national team prospects. But with a desire to stay and fight for his place, the 31-year-old could yet prove important to Ten Hag. Is Granit Xhaka on his way out at Bayer Leverkusen? One Bundesliga and German Cup champion that does appear to be on the way out at Bayer Leverkusen is Granit Xhaka – a player whom Andrich struck up an incredible understanding with during their unbeaten double winning campaign. Advertisement Bayer Leverkusen have already rejected an €8m offer from Saudi Pro League club Neom SC for the Swiss midfielder, and now Premier League side Sunderland have entered the race to sign Xhaka. Ex-Union coach Fischer calls for greater recognition for women's game
Union Berlin's coach Urs Fischer stands in the stadium before the German DFB Cup soccer match between VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Union Berlin at MHPArena. Tom Weller/dpa Former Union Berlin coach Urs Fischer has called for greater recognition for female footballers. "The mindset of clubs is often still outdated. They should try to raise more money to support women. Every female footballer should be able to make a living from sport," Fischer told the Tagesspiegel newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday. Advertisement Fischer has close ties to women's football: his daughter, Riana, played for FC Zurich, where she won the Swiss women's Super League title eight times. "During this time, I saw what women go through - and how little recognition there is for it. The biggest problem is the infrastructure," he said. At Union, Fischer coached the men's team and led the Berlin team to its maiden Bundesliga promotion and its first-ever Champions League participation. However, he hasn't ruled out coaching a women's team at some point. "I've always had contact with women's teams and I would put it like this: never say never. Many things are possible," he said. Advertisement Union's women's team will play in the top tier for the first time in the upcoming season. During the women's Euro 2025, which is taking place in Switzerland until July 27, Fischer is an ambassador for the "Football Can Do More" organization.

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner), File) Liverpool delivered a huge statement of intent after winning the Premier League title by signing Germany star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday. The transfer fee could climb to 116 million pounds ($156 million), which would make the 22-year-old Wirtz the most expensive player in the history of British soccer. Liverpool, determined to not stand still after securing a record-tying 20th English top-flight title, has splashed out a club record to bring in not only one of the best players from Germany, but one of the top youngsters in the world.

(AP Photo/Martin Meissner, File) MUNICH (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz seemingly denied a report that he requested the No. 10 shirt at Liverpool as part of talks over a potentially record-breaking transfer. In rare public comments from the player whose fee could break the English Premier League record, Wirtz responded to a report from broadcaster Sky Germany on Tuesday that he would like to keep wearing No. 10 if he moves to Liverpool. Advertisement That number was worn this season by midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, a World Cup winner with Argentina, and is a storied shirt at Liverpool. Previous players to wear the No. 10 include club greats like John Barnes, Michael Owen, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mané. 'Who says I want the 10," Wirtz wrote on Instagram late Tuesday, "I respect players." 'Don't believe everything what's written,' he added with a clown emoji. The Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder is reportedly nearing a move to Premier League champion Liverpool after turning down interest from Bayern Munich. Liverpool has already signed his Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, a Dutch right back. Advertisement Any agreement for Wirtz could break the British record of 106.7 million pounds (then $131.4 million) that Chelsea agreed to pay Benfica for Enzo Fernández in early 2023. Wirtz is set to play for Germany on Wednesday in its Nations League semifinal against Portugal in Munich. ___ AP soccer:
