UTeM's electronics lab notches a national first

MELAKA: What started as a quiet research laboratory tucked within Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) here has propelled the institution to national acclaim. The university's Micro & Nano Electronics Laboratory (MiNE) has become the first in the country to be awarded the prestigious Cadence Design Systems' Certified Lab status. UTeM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said the recognition sets a new benchmark not only for the university but the entire country's academic and technological landscape. It also reflects the growing global relevance of home-grown innovation in integrated circuit (IC) design, she added. "The certification, awarded by Cadence Design Systems from the United States, recognises MiNE's capabilities in using Virtuoso technology, a globally used platform in analogue IC and custom layout design. 'This achievement positions UTeM as a key player in the global semiconductor education ecosystem,' she told The Star on Tuesday (July 29). Prof Massila noted that the Virtuoso Cadence platform, which has nearly 60% market share in analogue IC custom design, is considered an industry standard, making the certification even more meaningful. "The software is widely used and remains in high demand. For our students, this means access to world-class tools and training that align with real-world industry expectations,' she said. Prof Massila said that as part of the Cadence IC Design Certification, UTeM students will undergo structured training and take industry-recognised badge examinations, giving them a solid foundation and a competitive edge in the job market. 'This is a golden opportunity that strengthens the employability of our graduates and boosts their confidence to compete on the global stage,' she added. Prof Massila said the MiNE Lab, under the Faculty of Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology, is led by three Cadence-certified trainers who ensure that the laboratory meets international standards for training and research. She said the certification supports UTeM's 2023–2025 Strategic Plan, which emphasises preparing an industry-ready workforce. "It also aligns with the Higher Education Ministry's goals for national talent development," she added.

ALOR GAJAH: A 51-year-old jobless man died after being beaten by a mob following an alleged lewd act in the parking lot of a Jasin supermarket. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed the incident, stating the victim succumbed to severe injuries at the scene. The victim, who had prior records under Section 377D of the Penal Code for public indecency in 2003 and 2024, was said to have committed the act at 7.26 pm before being chased and assaulted. 'The victim attempted to escape, even jumping into a river, but was caught and beaten again,' Dzulkhairi said during an event at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). Seven men, including a Pakistani national, were arrested and remanded for seven days under Section 302 for murder. In a separate case, a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days after assaulting a man in his 20s during a brawl near Stadthuys. Melaka cops arrest seven suspects over mob killing in Jasin

ALOR GAJAH: A jobless man has died after he was beaten, allegedly by a mob after he was said to have committed a lewd act in the parking lot of a supermarket in Jasin, says Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar. He said in the incident at about 9pm, the 51-year-old victim died at the scene due to severe injuries. He had two previous crimes recorded under Section 377D of the Penal Code for committing gross indecency in a public place in 2003 and 2024. "Based on early investigations, the victim is said to have committed an act of gross indecency at 7.26pm before he was chased and assaulted by several individuals. "The victim tried to escape for about 200m, including a desperate leap into the river, before he was caught by the mob and beaten again," he said after officiating at the Melaka Schools Sports Council Athletics Championships at the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in Durian Tunggal here on Monday (July 28). He said seven men aged between 20s to 50s, including a Pakistani national, were remanded for seven days in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. In a separate case, Dzulkhairi said a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days for beating a man in his 20s in a fight near Bulatan Kancil in the Stadthuys compound at Banda Hilir on Sunday (July 27). He said the incident occurred when the suspect and 17 of his biker friends were fined by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) enforcement officers for violating the Vehicle Free Zone (ZBK) area. He said MBMB enforcement officers had asked the group of motorcyclists to leave but they were ignored before they were issued summonses for ignoring council orders. "The group led by the suspect then tore up the summonses and a confrontation broke out between them and another group of bikers. "The victim, who was struck with a helmet and a wheel lock, was later rushed to the Melaka Hospital with minor injuries," he said. Dzulkhairi said all 23 individuals involved were arrested between 9.30pm and 1am on Sunday but 22 of them were released on police bail while the suspect was remanded for three days. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the performance of his duties. – Bernama

Man beaten to death by public after exposing himself at supermarket parking lot

ALOR GAJAH: A 51-year-old man was assaulted to death last night by members of the public after he had allegedly committed sexual harassment by exposing his private parts in public. The man, who is married, was found dead in front of a kindergarten in Jasin Bestari, Jasin, near here, in the 7.26pm incident. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the police received a report on the incident at around 9pm. He added preliminary investigations showed that the incident began when the man was seen exposing his private parts to the public at the parking area of a supermarket. Members of the public, who noticed the man's behaviour, gave chase. "The man was then chased by the crowd and fled towards Jasin Bestari. "He was caught after a scuffle. Initially, two men assaulted him before he managed to escape into a bushy area and jumped into a river to cross it," he told reporters after launching the 2025 Melaka State Sports Council Athletics Championship at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) Stadium. Dzulkhairi said that after crossing the river, the man was caught and beaten by several other men who heard cries from the public calling for help to detain him. He said the victim, who sustained injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. His body was taken to the Jasin Hospital Forensics Unit for a post-mortem. Following the incident, police arrested seven people, including a Pakistani national, aged between 15 and their 50s, to assist in investigations. "All seven have been remanded for seven days starting today, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. "We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting Investigating Officer Assistant Superintendent Mohamad Ehsan Abu Bakar at 016-520 9501," he said, while also advising the public not to take the law into their own hands. In a related development, Dzulkhairi said investigations showed that the deceased had two prior convictions for acts of gross indecency under Section 377D of the Penal Code in 2023 and 2024.

New AI-cyber faculty to drive TVET

High-tech boost: Anwar (centre) officiating the ceremony recently. With him are (from left) Zambry, Ahmad Zahid, Ab Rauf and Fadhlina. ARMING students with skills in their respective fields is no longer enough in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). What is increasingly vital is preparing them for the future through training in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. That is the mission Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has undertaken with the recent inauguration of its Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity (FAIX). The launch of the initiative – the latest under the National TVET 2025 agenda – was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony, held at the Melaka International Trade Centre on June 12. UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said FAIX has been equipped with 13 state-of-the-art laboratories that allow students and researchers to explore advanced technologies in a conducive and competitive environment. 'Some 1,040 local students are expected to form the inaugural intake in October, marking a significant start to the faculty's official operations,' she said in a press release. She added that the university's role is not limited to supporting the latest national TVET agenda through academic, research and innovation efforts in the fields of AI and cybersecurity alone. 'UTeM also serves as a backbone for Malaysia in producing skilled professional talent through technology-based training under a comprehensive and adaptive TVET approach. 'The establishment of FAIX further strengthens the importance of applied AI across various disciplines, including engineering, business, automation, and smart systems. 'This cross-disciplinary approach is key to delivering comprehensive, sustainable and high-value technology solutions to both industry and the nation,' she said. Noting that AI and cybersecurity are essential – and no longer optional – fields in today's digital era, she added that FAIX serves as a national reference centre and a hub for research and innovation in applied AI and cybersecurity, in line with industry needs and the country's aspirations. 'The launch of FAIX marks UTeM's commitment to being a pioneer in developing high-tech TVET talent and in becoming a relevant, responsive and proactive technical higher education institution prepared for the future,' she said. Also present at the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
