Dubbing people with different ideology Urban Naxal a fashion of govt: Pawar
Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said the state govt had made it a fashion to label people following a different ideology as "Urban Naxals". The veteran politician made the comment criticising the Maharashtra government, after Shiv Sena MLC Manisha Kayande claimed in the assembly on Wednesday that some "Urban Naxal" organisations had entered the Ashadhi Wari. She said the state govt would have to take action against them. Reacting to the issue, Pawar told reporters in Pune, "One of the organisations labelled as 'Urban Naxals' is Lokayat. I have closely seen their work. They follow a progressive path and work on bringing change in society against regressive thoughts. It is wrong to call them 'Urban Naxals'." Later, the court gave a verdict in their favour. It has become a fashion of state govt to label someone as an 'Urban Naxal' if s/he follows a different ideology. The possibility of the state trying to control these people by terming them 'Urban Naxal' cannot be ruled out. "

Conspiracy to polarise Mumbai for vote bank politics says BJP MLA Ameet Satam
MUMBAI: In a bid to take on the Marathi manoos narrative of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ahead of the BMC polls, BJP MLA Ameet Satam on Tuesday said in the Legislative Assembly that a conspiracy is underway to polarize the city for vote-bank politics. Satam said in the days to come, 'some Khan will become the Mayor of Mumbai, adding that attempts are being made to polarize and divide Mumbai. While efforts have been made to modernize and secure the city through infrastructure projects under CM Devendra Fadnavis, there are also attempts by certain elements to change the colour of Mumbai, Satam said. While Mumbai is becoming more prosperous and secure, Satam said that some elements are trying to change the city's identity. "Pakistani flags are seen in the political rallies of such groups, and even individuals accused in bomb blast cases are participating in these campaigns. "Previously, slums located on land reserved for parks could not be redeveloped. But a revolutionary decision by the Mahayuti govt now allows for the redevelopment of 60% of such land. Under this initiative, residents are receiving rightful housing through the PM Awas Yojana," Satam said while speaking on a discussion on Mumbai in the Legislative Assembly.

‘Urban Naxal' is a fictitious term coined by BJP to gain traction: Maha Cong prez
Nagpur: Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal said the term "Urban Naxal" is one conjured up by BJP as part of its propaganda and added there is "no such thing as Urban Naxal". During last year's polls, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had alleged that Congress neta Rahul Gandhi is surrounded by Urban Naxals. Talking to TOI, Sapkal said, "Who is an Urban Naxal? Do they carry weapons like Maoists? The truth is no such thing exists. BJP conjures up such buzzwords only to gain electoral traction. The saffron party indulges in such things when it wants to divert attention from real issues." Fadnavis' statement made last year on Gandhi and urban naxals created a national stir, with both national parties engaging in a prolonged verbal duel. Talking about the upcoming local body polls, Sapkal said BJP's "false promises" will come to haunt it. One such issue, Sapkal pointed out, is the Mahayuti's 'Ladki Bahin' scheme. He criticised the ruling alliance for failing to deliver on their promise of increasing the monthly financial aid for women from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100. "They started Rs 1,500 per month dole for women and promised a hike it up to Rs 2,100 if voted to power," Sapkal noted, adding the increased amount has yet to be implemented. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He further alleged the govt is attempting to reduce the number of beneficiaries, with even the existing Rs 1,500 being withdrawn in some cases. Sapkal warned this failure to fulfil promises could have significant repercussions for the BJP-led Mahayuti in upcoming elections, including local body polls and major elections in 2029. "Instead of Ladki Bahin, we now have angry bahins. Our sisters have been fooled by BJP-led Mahayuti," he remarked, highlighting the growing discontent among women who feel let down by the govt's unfulfilled promises. In addition to the Ladki Bahin scheme, Sapkal criticised the govt's handling of the agricultural sector, particularly in providing relief to farmers affected by unseasonal rains. "Many farmers are still facing financial distress. It is very sad," he said, emphasising the need for immediate action to support those who lost their crops and struggling to make ends meet. Sapkal said there is growing unrest in the public because of corruption in Mahayuti. "Many public projects are being announced without any logic. It seems infrastructure projects are more for the benefit of contractors rather than the people, who have now seen through this facade," said Sapkal.

Law student suspended after found with UAPA accused at Nagpur hotel
Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of Bombay high court has declined to stay the suspension of a final-year law student, who was found in a Nagpur hotel with a suspected Urban Naxal from Kerala, Rejaz Sydeek, recently arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly waging war against India. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A student of an elite law college in Nagpur, she was debarred from all academic and non-academic activities since May 10, two days after Sydeek's arrest. She had moved HC seeking urgent relief as her semester examinations were underway. Her plea was strongly opposed by additional govt pleader Sangeeta Jachak, who represented Lakadganj police. A vacation bench of Justice Rohit Joshi ruled that the action was administrative in nature and therefore did not warrant judicial interference at this stage. "Suspension and debarring a student from appearing in examinations are punishments under the code of conduct. However, suspension pending inquiry is not punishment, but an administrative action. It is well settled that the power to issue such suspension is inherent in a disciplinary authority," the court observed. The court was hearing a writ petition filed by the student, who was present during the arrest of Sydeek, a Kerala resident facing UAPA charges filed by Lakadganj police on May 8. Sydeek is accused of links with radical organisations and involvement in anti-national activities. The law school later pointed to the student's social media activity, including one post allegedly contradicting the official stand on "Operation Sindoor," a recent military campaign. The petitioner, who has 13 subject backlogs across various semesters, argued through her counsel S Kulkarni that the institution's decision violated principles of natural justice. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He contended that punishment could not be imposed without conducting an inquiry, as mandated under the university's 2023 code of conduct. The institution, however, assured the court that the disciplinary proceedings would be completed by May 25. It submitted that if the petitioner is exonerated, she would be allowed to sit for special examinations prior to the declaration of results — scheduled tentatively for early July. The last of her pending exams is on June 5. "This examination will be conducted before declaration of results for the seventh semester. Her results, including for backlogs, will be declared along with those of other students," the court noted, terming this approach as sufficient to "balance the equities." Justice Joshi permitted the institution to proceed with the disciplinary process, but directed that the outcome be communicated to the student on May 25. The case is scheduled for further hearing on May 27. KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM HC NAGPUR BENCH VERDICT Court held that the suspension was administrative, not punitive, pending inquiry Action does not violate natural justice as special exams will be allowed if exonerated to be completed by May 25; decision to be shared the same day. Student was barred from exams starting May 15; the last paper is on June 5 The student has 13 academic backlogs across semesters. Lakadganj police opposed relief; FIR filed under UAPA on May 8 Student's social media post on Operation Sindoor was flagged Petition is listed for further hearing on May 27 Court deemed the institute's approach fair & balanced

Maharashtra ATS Arrests Pune Man For Alleged Links With Naxalites
Last Updated: Prashant Jalinder Kamble used to repair computers and laptops before coming in contact with Kabir Kala Manch, a cultural group that has faced allegations of links to Naxalism. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested a 44-year-old man in Raigad district for his alleged links with Naxalites, police said. Prashant Jalinder Kamble, alias Laptop, was wanted since 2011 in connection with an 'Urban Naxal" case, an official said. Milind Teltumbde, a senior leader of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) who was killed in an encounter with security forces in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district two years ago, and top 'Maoist" Angela Sontakke were also named in the 2011 FIR. According to ATS officials, Kamble had been hiding in the Khopoli area of Raigad district, where he used to teach tribal children, for the past six to seven years, he said. Kamble, a resident of the Tadiwala Road area in Pune, used to repair computers and laptops. He came in contact with the Kabir Kala Manch, a cultural group that has faced allegations of links to Naxalism, said the official. The official said Kamble left home in 2010, claiming he was going to Mumbai for work, but never returned. He and one Santosh Shelar, also missing from Pune, subsequently became active members of the CPI (Maoist) in the jungles of Gadchiroli. In January 2024, Santosh Shelar returned to his home in Pune in a sick condition, where he was arrested by the ATS. Officials said Kamble is a 'high-value" target and called him a hardcore follower of Naxalite ideology. After the 2011 case, Kamble was declared absconding by the court, and a non-bailable warrant and proclamation were issued against him, he said. Based on specific information, the Pune unit of the ATS nabbed Kamble from Khopoli, the official said. After verification, he was placed under arrest, he said. Kamble was produced in a Mumbai court, which remanded him in the custody of the ATS till May 13, he said.
