Foot and mouth disease outbreak reported in the Free State
A foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak has been reported in the Free State, the department of agriculture said on Monday. The department said the outbreak was confirmed last Thursday on a commercial farm in the Moqhaka Local Municipality, located in the Kroonstad state veterinary area. Spokesperson for the ministry of agriculture Joylene Van Wyk said the affected property was placed under quarantine on July 8 and immediate control measures were implemented, including surveillance and vaccination. 'Trace-back activities are ongoing to determine the source of the infection, while farms in the surrounding 10km radius are undergoing surveillance to determine the possible extent of the spread,' Van Wyk said. She confirmed 270 FMD outbreaks had been reported across five provinces in South Africa by July. While 21 of the outbreaks had been resolved, 249 remained unresolved. 'The Eastern Cape has recorded 40 outbreaks, with 38 still open and two resolved. There have been no new reported cases in the Western Cape since September 2024. KwaZulu-Natal has been the most affected province, with 191 reported outbreaks, of which 172 remain active and 19 have been resolved. Since May, Gauteng has reported 32 outbreaks, North West has four open outbreaks, while Mpumalanga has reported three outbreaks,' she said.

Attie van Wyk moved to the top of the leaderboard in the 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge after the most recent instalment of the competition at Mbombela Golf Club on Wednesday, June 25. Van Wyk's 40 Stableford points took him to a total of 145, three more than Rian Joubert, who slipped one place to second after holding the top spot for two months. It is Van Wyk's second time as log leader, having also won the first leg of the series in March with 41 points. Sakkie de Lange is in third place on the standings with 137. Eugene Neumeyer won the day's Stableford competition on a count out, with Van Wyk the runner-up. Neumeyer, who missed the first edition of the challenge but has played the three since then, moves up to 20th place in the overall standings.\ Kobus Greyling claimed third place on Wednesday. To contend for the title, players must compete in at least five of the nine competition days, with their five best scores counting towards the overall standings after the grand final, which will be hosted on November 20. The fifth 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge competition will be held on July 23. Players are responsible for booking their own rounds and carts by contacting the club on 013 744 0952. Eligibility for prizes requires attendance at the prize-giving ceremony. Participants must be affiliated with a club and hold an official handicap. The 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge champion will win a year-long membership to Mbombela Golf Club. Kidnapping Police said the mother of the baby was at a local shopping complex in Bellville when she became nauseous. She left the child in the care of a woman who was with her when she went to the bathroom. Upon her return, the mother could not locate the woman and her baby. She reported the incident to Bellville Saps for further investigation. Kamogelo Baukudi Meanwhile, the case involving a 42-year-old police officer and five of his co-accused linked to the kidnapping of a 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi suffered a setback. Nzima Adoons was supposed to appear with his co-accused before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday. However, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the matter could not proceed as the ongoing investigation is yet to link his co-accused to the alleged crime of kidnapping and extortion. The bail application was postponed to 3 July. Baukudi, a grade 11 pupil from Martie du Plessis School, was found alive early on Friday morning, six weeks after he went missing. R19m in fake luxury goods seized in Bloemfontein crackdown
SAPS confiscated counterfeit goods worth over R19m and apprehended six foreign nationals in a series of targeted operations in Bloemfontein. The raids were spearheaded by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, with assistance from the Public Order Policing team in Bloemfontein, officers from SARS Customs Division, brand protection representatives and private security personnel. Bloemfontein Courant reports that search and seizure warrants, issued under the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1964, were executed at selected retail premises in Bloemfontein's city centre last week. 'Over the course of two days, more than 13 000 counterfeit items were confiscated that included clothing, shoes, bags and jewellery,' says police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk. '[The] majority of the seized items are imitations of high-end luxury brands.' Six foreign nationals were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act 13 of 2002, with one suspect also facing an additional charge of resisting arrest. 'SAPS remains committed to disrupting and dismantling the illegal trade in counterfeit and illicit goods to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses and support the South African economy,' adds Van Wyk. Police probe kidnapping of 9-day-old baby Cape Town mall

Police are appealing for information leading to the whereabouts of a nine-day-old baby who went missing with a person who was with his mother at a shopping mall in Cape Town.
