Attie van Wyk moved to the top of the leaderboard in the 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge after the most recent instalment of the competition at Mbombela Golf Club on Wednesday, June 25. The series is once again proudly sponsored by Octopi Smart Solutions and Du Toit-Smuts & Partners Attorneys.
Van Wyk's 40 Stableford points took him to a total of 145, three more than Rian Joubert, who slipped one place to second after holding the top spot for two months. It is Van Wyk's second time as log leader, having also won the first leg of the series in March with 41 points.
Sakkie de Lange is in third place on the standings with 137.
Eugene Neumeyer won the day's Stableford competition on a count out, with Van Wyk the runner-up. Neumeyer, who missed the first edition of the challenge but has played the three since then, moves up to 20th place in the overall standings.\
Kobus Greyling claimed third place on Wednesday.
To contend for the title, players must compete in at least five of the nine competition days, with their five best scores counting towards the overall standings after the grand final, which will be hosted on November 20.
The fifth 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge competition will be held on July 23. Players are responsible for booking their own rounds and carts by contacting the club on 013 744 0952.
Eligibility for prizes requires attendance at the prize-giving ceremony. Participants must be affiliated with a club and hold an official handicap. The 2025 Lowvelder Golf Challenge champion will win a year-long membership to Mbombela Golf Club.

Springboks must raise standards despite respect for spirited Italy, says Du Toit

Thomas du Toit says the Springboks must raise their standards and fix mistakes as a unit after a tough review of their performance against Italy, while embracing his versatile role in the front row ahead of the next Test. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Now that the dew has settled on the Springboks' iffy performance against Italy, the players and coaching staff have a different perspective on what panned out in the 42-14 win at Loftus Versfeld, and it is hardly doom and gloom. Those were the wise words of squad newcomer Thomas du Toit, who added that not enough credit has been given to a plucky Italian side that came hard at the Boks and slickly executed a well-constructed plan. Du Toit is fresh from a dream season in England in which he won three trophies with all-conquering Bath, while reaching new heights in his personal game, including scoring 10 tries, a record in the Premiership for a prop. 'I would not say we have had a wake-up call,' Du Toit said. 'It is more that we set high standards for ourselves in terms of preparation, training, and the game itself. We try to lift each other up week in week out to get better. 'So, we compare ourselves to ourselves,' the 30-year-old said. 'When we review a game, we look at whether we were better than the week before. In certain aspects, we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and say we weren't better (than the Barbarians game).' Du Toit said that the Monday review showed that the Boks had not lacked intensity. 'It was not a case of our mindset being wrong. We know what needs to be done, and we try to do it. Credit to the Italians, they are a proud nation and play very good rugby. They were very good on the weekend. 'They are a young team with a lot of energy, and they are well-coached. They don't mess around in their own half, and from our perspective, we need to ensure that we don't allow them to get into our 22 and make their presence felt there. 'As we said repeatedly last week, we respect them and their patriotism for their country, as that's something that resonates with us. There is a good alignment in their squad, and they are gelling well as a unit, so there are definitely areas we need to improve on this week, while we also have to build on the areas of our game which went fairly well.' Du Toit said that the Monday review gave the team a fresh reality 'Straight after the game, emotions can be high, and you don't necessarily see the whole picture. Our coaches do a great job in reviewing the game (on the Sunday), then when we meet on a Monday, we have a true picture of what happened in the game. Your perception can change from Saturday night to Monday. 'The coaches keep the emotion out of it until we have decent clarity on it. Then we work on fixing the mistakes. We take it on the chin as a team, not as individual players. We fix the problem as a unit. 'What went wrong is a difficult question,' Du Toit continued. 'I will bring it back to our standards. The frustration lies within ourselves in that we wanted to be better, and we don't see that.' Du Toit is set for a run in the front row, and it remains to be seen whether it will be at loosehead or tighthead, as he is comfortable in both positions.' 'I was fortunate that (Bath) coach Johan van Graan gave me plenty of opportunities in both positions, so it doesn't matter where I play. 'The only difference between the positions is whether you play on the left or right-hand side of the scrum and where you stand in the lineouts. It doesn't have an impact when one plays with the ball in hand or the game in general.' 'It is like riding a bike — I just need a week of training in one of the positions, and by game time, it feels natural to me. I feel it is an extra arrow in my quiver I can take out when the team needs it.'

Durban surfer makes historic Ballito Pro win

FRESH from his win at the Ballito Pro Presented by O'Neill on Sunday, Durban surfer Luke Thompson is already making waves in the Eastern Cape where he is preparing to take on the Corona Cero Open J-Bay event from July 11 to 20. The 21-year-old was awarded a wildcard slot after his historic win on the North Coast where he out-manoeuvred Australian, George Pittar, in the final. Thompson, who began surfing at the age of 10 and was surfing for KZN at 12 years old, made history with his win, becoming the first South African since 2017 to be in the final at the Ballito Pro. He is no stranger to winning, having won the Ballito Pro Junior U14 boys division in 2018 before representing SA at the Vissla ISA World Junior Champs in October that year. Following his victory in front of his home crowd, Thompson said, 'It feels like a dream and I'm just waiting to wake up. I'm so proud to be South African, the support on the beach has been incredible.' Also Read: Champions crowned at Ballito Pro Junior The crowds had lined the beach for this momentous occasion, cheering every time Thompson paddled for a wave. Both surfers struggled to find a wave with an open face to work with, only needing a small requirement for the win. The 21-year-old local found an opportunity under priority to crank out two turns. Pittar had a chance to fight back, but fell on his wave and the beach erupted as Thompson got the required score for the win. 'When I made the final I was struggling to keep my emotions in check. I wish it was a better final, but I can't believe it. There's so much hard work that goes into this. The biggest thank you to my coach, I couldn't do it without him,' said Thompson. Hard at work already, at the pre-competition surf in Jeffreys Bay, Thompson will be joining the likes of Matthew McGillivray and Sarah Baum, who also secured the regional wildcards as the highest placed African surfers on the Challenger Series. The women's title winner at the Ballito Pro was Basque surfer Nadia Erostarbe who stormed her way to the top after claiming victory over Portugal's Yolanda Hopkins in the final. Polokwane race track hosts national short circuit motorbike series

POLOKWANE – The South Africa Short Circuit Series (SASCS) championship roared into action at the Polokwane Race Track on Saturday, drawing competitors from across the country for a day of intense motorcycle racing. According to Aston Nesbitt, the owner of the SASCS, the series serves as a development platform for motorcycle road racing in South Africa. 'This series is a breeding ground for all road racing in the country. We have classes for young children right through to adults, with various types of bikes suited to different skill levels,' he said. The SASCS is designed to guide riders along a path from basic riding skills to competitive international racing. 'Everybody's dream here is to one day race overseas. In fact, we have international riders who still compete in the series to sharpen their skills because the racing is so close and intense.' He added that the nature of short circuit racing, featuring powerful bikes on compact tracks, creates a fast-paced and competitive environment, ideal for developing talent and testing limits.
