Kejriwal, Mann to visit Gujarat on July 23-24; to attend mahapanchayat of cattle herders, gathering in support of jailed MLA

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal will visit Gujarat along with senior party leader and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on July 23-24, said the party's state chief Isudan Gadhvi on Friday. The two main agendas of the national leaders of the party will be to attend the Kisan-Pashupalak (cattle herders) Mahapanchayat, scheduled to take place in Modasa city of Aravalli, and address a public gathering in Dediapada where its incumbent MLA Chaitar Vasava has been arrested by the police. Gadhvi, speaking at a press conference, said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had crossed the heights of corruption and were now 'victimising farmers and cattle herders'. He said, 'I spoke to Kejriwal ji that the condition of the farmers as well as the cattle herders in Gujarat has become very miserable. So, to become the voice of the farmers and cattle breeders' associations of Gujarat, Kejriwal ji will attend the event at Modasa on July 23. Punjab CM Mann will also be present,' said Gadhvi. On the prospective public gathering in Dediapada on July 24, in support of MLA Vasava, Gadhvi said, 'AAP's Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava has raised many questions among the tribal community and has also exposed scams worth thousands of crores like MNREGA. Due to this, the BJP government has now framed him in false cases and sent him to jail.' He said, 'Due to this, people in the entire tribal area are opposing the action taken by the BJP government. In support of MLA Vasava and to become the voice of the tribal community, Kejriwalji and Bhagwant Saheb will address a massive public meeting in Dediapada.' Earlier this month, Vasava was arrested in an alleged case of attempt to murder a BJP leader during a brawl at a taluka-level meeting. Raising the issue of the recent death of a cattle herder after the Sabar Dairy protest, an AAP statement quoted Gadhvi as saying, 'A few days ago, the BJP government brutally lathi-charged farmers who went to Sabar Dairy to demand a rise in milk prices. The police also fired expired tear gas canisters, due to which a cattle herder from a poor family died. Farmers and cattle breeders who went out to demand justice under the BJP rule are dying today. This is a very sad incident. We also went to the house of the deceased cattle breeder and we saw his kin in a miserable condition.' On Monday, following a stir by cattle rearers, a protester died after complaining of chest pain. While the AAP alleged that the man died due to police action, police claimed that the death took place hours after the farmer went back home. 'The farmers had demanded a 19% price hike, which was the same as what was given last year, but the dairy did not agree. This situation is the same every year. First, they do not give the price hike, then there is a stir and an innocent person dies. Once that happens, they announce the price hike. We demand that this announcement be made within the next two days,' said Gadhvi. The AAP leader demanded that all cases against cattle herders be withdrawn, an investigation committee headed by a retired High Court judge be formed to provide justice to the cattle herder who died, all the officials and leaders who gave the lathi charge order be booked for murder, the protesting cattle herders get the price hike they are demanding, and the family of the deceased cattle herder be given Rs 1 crore compensation. A day after the protest, a case was registered against hundreds of people for allegedly attacking the police and damaging public property.

Gujarat: AAP MLA arrested for allegedly assaulting taluka panchayat president

Ahmedabad: The Narmada police in Gujarat arrested Chaitar Vasava, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Dediapada, for allegedly attacking a taluka panchayat president belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a public meeting in his constituency on Saturday. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP's national convener, claimed the arrest his party's MLA was political.(Representational/PTI) A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Vasava at Dediapada police station at 6 pm on Saturday, based on a complaint by Sanjay Vasava, president of the Dediapada taluka panchayat. The complainant alleged that Vasava physically attacked him with intent to cause death during the event organised under the Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko (ATVT) program, a Gujarat government initiative to discuss local development. He alleged that the MLA threw a mobile phone at him, causing head injuries, threatened him with glass shards, abused the woman president of Sagbara taluka panchayat, insulted people to disturb peace, and threw a glass causing property damage. The incident occurred after Vasava objected to his nominee's exclusion from a committee during the ATVT meeting, as per the FIR. Vasava disagreed with BJP members, including Sanjay Vasava. Authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada, prohibiting gatherings of more than four people. The MLA has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109 (attempt to murder), Section 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman, 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation), among others. The police sought five-days remand for Vasava from a magistrate court in Rajpipla on Sunday but it was turned down. Vasava's bail plea application was also rejected by the same court on Sunday. As a result, he was sent to judicial custody. Vasava is now likely to approach the sessions court in Rajpipla for his bail on Monday. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP's national convener, claimed the arrest was political. 'AAP MLA @Chaitar_Vasava has been arrested by BJP in Gujarat. The BJP is furious after losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election. If they think that AAP will be scared by such arrests, then this is their biggest mistake,' Kejriwal said on X. 'The people of Gujarat are fed up with BJP's misrule, hooliganism and dictatorship. They will give a befitting reply to the BJP,' he added. There was no immediate reaction from BJP to Kejriwal's charges. In December 2023, Chaitar Vasava was arrested for allegedly threatening forest officers and firing shots in the air while attempting to address a dispute related to the cultivation of forest land by local tribals in Narmada district.

Gujarat AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava arrested in assault case

AAP MLA from Dediapada, Chaitar Vasava, was arrested by Narmada Police in connection with an assault case in Gujarat. The case was registered at Dediapada Police Station based on a complaint by BJP-backed Taluka Panchayat President Sanjay Vasavathe. The incident occurred during a coordination meeting at the Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko (Tribal Development Office) in Dediapada, where a heated exchange between the two leaders escalated into a physical altercation. Following the FIR, police took Chaitar Vasava into custody, leading to tensions between his supporters and law enforcement. Supporters of the AAP legislator gathered in large numbers outside the LCB office in Rajpipla, where Vasava was brought post-arrest. In response to the late-night unrest, Section 144 was imposed in Dediapada to prevent unlawful assembly. The Narmada Police appealed to the public to maintain peace, warning that violations of the order would invite legal action. The situation grew tense outside the LCB office as the crowd continued to swell. To manage the situation, police deployed SRP (State Reserve Police) teams at both the Rajpipla LCB office and Dediapada. According to sources, Chaitar Vasava is likely to be produced in court later today. Notably, Chaitar Vasava has recently been in the spotlight for exposing alleged irregularities in the MNREGA (rural employment scheme). His arrest has sparked strong reactions among AAP supporters, some of whom clashed with police when efforts were made to disperse the gathering. He comes from a tribal background and has been actively involved in local issues concerning Adivasi rights, forest land, and the environment. Vasava gained attention during the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections when he defeated the BJP candidate, marking AAP's inroads into the tribal belts of the state. Known for his fiery speeches and activism, he has been vocal against displacement and forest encroachment policies.

Gujarat AAP MLA arrested for attempted murder

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava was arrested late on Saturday (July 5, 2025) night on charges of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a taluka panchayat functionary during a heated altercation in Dediapada, Narmada district, police confirmed on Sunday (July 6, 2025). The clash erupted on Saturday (July 5, 2025) during a meeting in Vasava's constituency, Dediapada. According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, the MLA became enraged after his nominee was overlooked for appointment to the local-level coordination committee, 'Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko' (ATVT). According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, Mr. Vasava became agitated and verbally abused a woman panchayat president before physically attacking Dediapada taluka panchayat president Sanjay Vasava. The MLA allegedly hurled a mobile phone at him, causing head injuries, and then attempted to strike him with a glass. When the glass shattered, Mr. Vasava reportedly picked up the shards, threatened to kill the complainant, and chased him before he escaped. The FIR also accuses the MLA of damaging office property. Police charged Vasava under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempted murder, insulting a woman's modesty, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and property damage. Following the arrest, authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada to prevent unrest, restricting public gatherings. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal condemned the arrest, calling it political vendetta by the BJP after AAP's recent victory in the Visavadar bypoll. In a post on X, Mr. Kejriwal accused the BJP of targeting Mr. Vasava out of frustration and warned that the people of Gujarat would respond to such tactics. 'After losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election, BJP is rattled. If they think such arrests will scare AAP, it's their biggest mistake. The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP's misrule, BJP's hooliganism, and dictatorship, and the people of Gujarat will now give BJP an answer,' his post read. Security remains tight in the area as investigations continue.

AAP Legislator Detained In Gujarat Over Alleged Assault On Government Official

Gujarat police have taken Aam Aadmi Party legislator Chaitar Vasava into custody in connection with serious criminal charges, including attempted murder, following an alleged violent confrontation with a government official in Narmada district. The arrest occurred on Saturday after Vasava allegedly attacked a taluka panchayat functionary at Dediapada, according to an official complaint filed with local authorities. The incident has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the charges and the political implications surrounding the detention of an elected representative. The confrontation reportedly began when Vasava became agitated over administrative decisions regarding the 'Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko' coordination committee, a local-level governance body. According to the complaint, the MLA objected strongly to his nominee not being considered for appointment as a member of this committee, which led to the escalation of tensions. During the altercation, Vasava allegedly directed abusive language toward the woman president of the Sagbara taluka, further compounding the seriousness of the incident. The alleged behavior has resulted in multiple criminal charges being filed against the legislator under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Law enforcement officials have registered a comprehensive First Information Report at Dediapada police station, encompassing several serious offenses. The charges include attempted murder, insulting the modesty of a woman through words and gestures, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult, and damage to property. This extensive list of charges reflects the gravity of the alleged incident and the multiple aspects of criminal behavior being investigated. In response to the arrest and potential for public unrest, local authorities have implemented Section 144 in the Dediapada area. This legal provision prohibits gatherings of four or more people as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the region. The imposition of such restrictions indicates the administration's concern about potential protests or demonstrations following the MLA's detention. The arrest has triggered immediate political reactions from AAP leadership, with party officials characterizing the detention as politically motivated and calling for Vasava's release. The party's response suggests they view the arrest as part of a broader political strategy rather than a legitimate law enforcement action. National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal responded swiftly to the arrest through social media, framing the incident within the context of recent electoral developments in Gujarat. Kejriwal claimed that the ruling BJP was "rattled" by AAP's victory in the Visavadar by-election and suggested that the arrest was a retaliatory measure designed to intimidate his party. In his statement, Kejriwal warned that such tactics would not succeed in intimidating AAP and predicted that the people of Gujarat would respond negatively to what he characterized as the BJP's "misgovernance, goondaism, and dictatorship." His comments reflect the party's strategy of positioning the arrest as evidence of authoritarian behavior by the ruling party. AAP leader Gopal Rai echoed similar sentiments, describing the arrest as "shameful" and linking it directly to the party's recent electoral success. Rai suggested that the BJP was resorting to "desperate tactics" following their defeat in the Visavadar by-election and reiterated that such actions would not intimidate AAP. The political rhetoric surrounding the arrest highlights the increasingly contentious relationship between AAP and the BJP in Gujarat, particularly following AAP's recent electoral gains in the state. The timing of the arrest, coming after AAP's by-election victory, has provided ammunition for the party's claims of political persecution. The incident also raises questions about the conduct expected of elected representatives and the appropriate response when political figures are accused of criminal behavior. The serious nature of the charges, including attempted murder and offenses against women, creates a complex situation where legal accountability must be balanced against political considerations. As the case proceeds through the legal system, it will likely continue to generate political controversy and debate about the treatment of opposition politicians in Gujarat. The outcome of the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings will be closely watched by political observers and could have implications for the broader political landscape in the state. The arrest of Chaitar Vasava represents a significant development in Gujarat politics, combining serious criminal allegations with claims of political motivation, creating a situation that will require careful navigation by both legal authorities and political leaders as the case unfolds.
