Gujarat AAP MLA arrested for attempted murder

The Hindua day ago
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava was arrested late on Saturday (July 5, 2025) night on charges of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a taluka panchayat functionary during a heated altercation in Dediapada, Narmada district, police confirmed on Sunday (July 6, 2025).
The clash erupted on Saturday (July 5, 2025) during a meeting in Vasava's constituency, Dediapada. According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, the MLA became enraged after his nominee was overlooked for appointment to the local-level coordination committee, 'Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko' (ATVT).
According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, Mr. Vasava became agitated and verbally abused a woman panchayat president before physically attacking Dediapada taluka panchayat president Sanjay Vasava. The MLA allegedly hurled a mobile phone at him, causing head injuries, and then attempted to strike him with a glass. When the glass shattered, Mr. Vasava reportedly picked up the shards, threatened to kill the complainant, and chased him before he escaped. The FIR also accuses the MLA of damaging office property.
Police charged Vasava under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempted murder, insulting a woman's modesty, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and property damage. Following the arrest, authorities imposed Section 144 in Dediapada to prevent unrest, restricting public gatherings.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal condemned the arrest, calling it political vendetta by the BJP after AAP's recent victory in the Visavadar bypoll. In a post on X, Mr. Kejriwal accused the BJP of targeting Mr. Vasava out of frustration and warned that the people of Gujarat would respond to such tactics. 'After losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election, BJP is rattled. If they think such arrests will scare AAP, it's their biggest mistake. The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP's misrule, BJP's hooliganism, and dictatorship, and the people of Gujarat will now give BJP an answer,' his post read.
Security remains tight in the area as investigations continue.

Chaitar Vasava arrest: Congress MLA Anant Patel backs AAP leader, calls for ‘united protest' by tribal communities

The camaraderie between Congress MLA Anant Patel and AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava—both prominent tribal leaders in Gujarat—is well known. Now, following Vasava's arrest by the Narmada police, Patel has come out in support of him, urging tribal organisations and communities across the state to unite and protest. On Saturday, an alleged scuffle between Vasava and BJP leader Sanjay Vasava during a meeting at the taluka panchayat office ended up in the arrest in Gujarat's Narmada district on Saturday. Patel, who represents the Vansda constituency in Navsari, posted a video on social media on Monday, appealing to people to join a protest in solidarity with Dediapada MLA Vasava. In the purported video, Patel said, 'The tribal MLA Chaitarbhai Vasava is popular for taking up the issues of tribal (communities) against the state government and their officials to create pressure on the administration and get justice.' He alleged, 'The Narmada police illegally arrested Chaitar Vasava on Saturday. Just a few days ago, Chaitar Vasava and I had jointly carried out a successful protest against DGVCL officials, who were not giving jobs to tribal and OBC youths who were on the merit list and cleared written and practical exams conducted by DGVCL since January.' Accusing the ruling BJP of using the police for political ends, Patel said, 'The BJP uses the police department as their workers… We oppose the stance taken by the state government. We have decided to organise a protest march called Nyay Yatra in the coming days in support of the tribal MLA, and will gherao the Dediapada police station. We are seeking support from all tribal organisations across Gujarat, including political leaders, to back us in a march against the arrest of Chaitar Vasava. The tribal community has never bowed down and will not do so in the future.' Speaking to The Indian Express, Patel reiterated, 'We have called a meeting of all the leaders of tribal organisations in South Gujarat and Central Gujarat and are planning to carry out a protest in favour of Chaitar Vasava. We are supporting him as a tribal MLA and not as an AAP MLA. We are working on bringing all tribal leaders on a single platform in support of Vasava.'

'On wrong side again': BJP attacks Rahul Gandhi's 'obsession' with China military tech; cites previous comments

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of batting for Chinese military hardware and said that Raebareli MP has a knack for ending up on the wrong side of the patriotic discourse. BJP IT chief Amit Malviya on Monday claimed that in 2021, Rahul Gandhi questioned why Indian forces did not use Chinese-style surveillance drones and even praised the PLA's tactics during the Ladakh standoff. "At an academic interaction in London (2023), he claimed China is winning the 'technology race' and urged India to learn from Chinese military innovation, including drone warfare," Malviya said in a post on X and added that Rahul Gandhi has a curious obsession with Chinese military tech. — amitmalviya (@amitmalviya) "During a 2022 closed-door discussion with defence 'experts', Rahul reportedly pressed for India to 'explore options' similar to China's tactical drone deployment in border areas. Whether it's undermining India's armed forces or amplifying enemy models, Rahul Gandhi has a knack for ending up on the wrong side of the patriotic discourse," he added. Earlier on Monday, Malviya criticised Rahul Gandhi again for spreading fear and incorrect information about the stock market, highlighting that it has generated wealth for numerous retail investors through mutual funds and IPOs. Following SEBI's action against hedge fund Jane Street for alleged index manipulation, Gandhi posted on X, "I clearly stated in 2024 -- the F&O market has become a playground for 'big players', and small investors' pockets are continuously being drained. Now, SEBI itself is admitting that Jane Street manipulated thousands of crores. Why did SEBI remain silent for so long?" BJP IT department head countered that SEBI's ban on a global entity demonstrates robust regulatory measures to protect small investors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A failing liver is taking my son away from me! Malviya emphasised that the Modi government's reforms have strengthened SEBI's transparency and independence. He pointed out that major financial scandals occurred during Congress rule, citing Harshad Mehta, Ketan Parekh, and the UTI incident. The BJP representative highlighted India's stock market growth, noting a USD 1 trillion increase in market capitalisation since March 2025. He detailed the mutual fund industry's 576 per cent growth over a decade, with AUM rising from Rs 8 lakh crore to Rs 54 lakh crore. Referring to Gandhi as "Balakbudhhi", Malviya criticised him for spreading market misinformation whilst maintaining his own investment portfolio. He cited increased SIP contributions and successful IPO launches, benefiting ordinary investors. Malviya concluded by questioning Gandhi's understanding of market operations, suggesting that the Congress party's credibility was diminishing while India's markets continued to provide opportunities for millions of new investors under the Modi government's leadership.

He also warned of legal action against those taking the law into their hands over the issue. For the first time in two decades, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray held a joint rally on June 5 to mark their 'success" in getting the Devendra Fadnavis dispensation to withdraw two government resolutions (GRs) on the three-language policy under NEP 2020 and teaching of Hindi from Class 1 in English and Marathi medium schools. At the event, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, respectively, had vowed to oppose all attempts by the government to 'impose" Hindi and 'sideline" Marathi in the state.
