Kempegowda led a life of Vishwamanava: DKS

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has lauded Bengaluru's founder Kempegowda as a 'Vishwamanava'. Speaking at an event organised to celebrate the 516th birth anniversary of Kempegowda, he said, 'Kempegowda was born a Vokkaliga but he lived a life of a 'Vishwamanava'. He has left an indelible mark on our society.' He also laid the foundation stone for Kempegowda Bhavana and awarded Kempegowda awards. 'Bengaluru is making waves around the world, but we should not forget that Kempegowda was the one who laid the foundation for the modern Bengaluru. He spread the message of secularism by giving opportunities to all sections of the society.' 'I would like to send out a message to our community. Nobody seeks to be born in a particular community. Dharma must be part of politics, but politics has no place in dharma. Kempegowda belongs to all communities, he is an asset of the society.' 'Managing Benglauru is not an easy task. I have been trying to give the city a new shape keeping in mind the scale and size of the city. Tunnel road and elevated roads are getting ready. Projects worth over Rs one lakh are being planned for Bengaluru.' 'We are planning a new 60,000-seater stadium. A land parcel of 50 acres has been identified for the purpose. We are also fighting the garbage mafia. Our government is trying to do whatever it takes to develop the city,' he said. 'We should not forget three Ks- Kempegowda the founder of Bengaluru, Kengel Hanumanthaiah who built the Vidhana Soudha and SM Krishna who built the Vikasa Soudha,' he said. 'We got the approval of the Cabinet for five-acre land for Kempegowda Bhavana in just one week. We have allocated Rs 100 crore for the Kempegowda Bhavana, a few architects have submitted the design concepts. This will be brought to the attention of Sri Nirmalananda Swamiji,' he noted. 'When I was the Energy minister, we worked out the modalities for celebrating Kempegowda jayanthi. Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji cleared the air about the exact date of Kempegowda's birthday. This effort was the prelude to these celebrations today. I would like Kempegowda Jayanthi to be celebrated across the state,' he added.

Writer's Corner: Roopa Pai on ‘Becoming Bangalore…', a tribute to her hometown, captured in print

Many books explore the history, culture, or overlooked facets of Bengaluru. But in terms of its breadth, eclectic range of knowledge, and accessibility, Roopa Pai's Becoming Bangalore: Stories That Shaped A Hometown is a standout. Spanning 75 different articles, the book, launched this January, offers glimpses into almost every chapter of Bengaluru's history – from the Vidhana Soudha and the humble vegetable locally known as 'chow chow' to the city's lesser-known connection to Chhatrapati Shivaji. Each section comes with a personalised introduction by the writer—and contributions from readers who share their memories and musings. Speaking to The Indian Express, Pai says that the foundation of the book began in 2021 with a fortnightly column on the city written for the Hindustan Times. Pai, the founder of Bangalore Walks, which conducts guided walks, says, 'For a long time, I had been sending people links on WhatsApp to read the column. I realised it was something that people enjoyed reading as it came in small, concentrated bites.' Prompted by readers who expressed interest in reading all the columns in one place, the idea of a book began to take shape, says Pai, who pitched the idea to publishing group Hachette India, which usually partners with her on books for children. It was not an easy task, says Pai. 'You start thinking, it is already written, so how long could it take? But I ended up writing 25,000 words more than the columns themselves in little bites, which had to be punchy and intriguing enough for people to want to read,' she explains. Another concern was on how to format the book. The subjects did not lend themselves well to classification by topic, and the columns were not restricted to a particular time or space. After a great deal of back and forth, Pai had a brainwave. 'What defines Bangalore is its flowering seasons – which flowers are in bloom in which season,' she says. The key dates in each column were then chosen to connect to a specific flowering season, like the gulmohar flowering from March to May. An intense editing process followed, and 75 columns were chosen. 'Online, it is impossible to tell how many people have viewed it, which ones went viral. When people not on the mailing list say they have read the column that someone sent to them, you know that it has gone beyond the usual reach. But now (with the book) I find that a lot of young people have enjoyed it…a lot of people who have said they want to read this out to their dad or mom, as they would enjoy it. It has brought up a lot of nostalgia for people from the city, and a lot of wonder from people who are outside,' says Pai. 'People are always trying to find out what it is about Bangalore that draws them…it is difficult to pin down the magic. That is why everyone says the weather; otherwise, they don't know what to say. The weather is just the backdrop. But would you go and live in another city with great weather if it did not have everything else?' she asks.

Kadaba yoga prodigy Akshaya Babubettu shines in capital event

Bengaluru: In a proud moment for rural Karnataka, Grade V student Akshaya Babubettu from the Government Higher Primary School in Yenekallu, Kadaba taluk, was invited as a special guest by the state government to participate in the National Yoga Day celebrations held in front of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presided over the grand event, which saw the participation of over 5,000 yoga practitioners. Akshaya was given a five-minute slot to perform live on the main stage, showcasing her exceptional yoga talent. She was accompanied by her parents and yoga instructor Sharath Margiladka, following an official invitation extended by the government. Akshaya, the daughter of Mohan Kumar and Divya from Baladi in Yenekallu village, has been undergoing training at the Nirantara Yoga Centre and has already amassed an impressive array of accolades. She has won six gold medals, one silver, and three bronze medals in various competitive yoga events, standing out for her dedication and discipline at a very young age. Among her most remarkable achievements is her entry into the World Wide Book of Records and the London Book of Records for holding the Hanumanasana pose for 50 minutes and 20 seconds, a rare accomplishment that sets her apart on the global stage. Her growing list of accolades includes a 6th-place finish at the 9th International Yoga Day Championship held in July 2023 in Koramangala, a 2nd-place win at the B.K.S. Iyengar Memorial National Yoga Championship in August 2023 in Bengaluru, and a 7th-place finish at the World Fitness Federation of Yogasana Sports in the Sub-Junior Girls category. She also holds a record in the International Yoga Book of Records for maintaining the Natarajasana pose for one full minute. She has also bagged several medals in other high-profile competitions. These include a 3rd-place win at the 15th National Yogasana Championship organized by the Yogasana Sports Federation of India, a bronze medal at the Puneeth Rajkumar Memorial State-Level Championship in Shivamogga, and gold medals in the taluk-level event at Bilinele, the Dasara State Meet in Mysuru, the state-level competitions in Moodbidri, and at the Ganga International School in Bengaluru. She also secured bronze medals at national-level events in Rajajinagar and Mysuru, and topped it all with a gold medal at the International Yoga Championship held in Dubai in May 2025. Akshaya's outstanding talent came to light during Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader's visit to Kudmaru village. Her achievements were brought to his attention by her parents, former Taluk Panchayat member Fazal Kodimbala, and local school teacher Khader. Moved by her inspiring story, Speaker Khader personally recommended her name to District In-Charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, which led to her official inclusion in the prestigious state-level event. Speaking to reporters Fazal Kodimbala said, 'It is a matter of immense pride that a government school student from a remote village has been recognized and invited by the Karnataka government to perform at such a significant occasion. Acknowledging such rural talent is vital—it gives wings to many more aspiring children from similar backgrounds.' Akshaya's participation in the Bengaluru event is not just a celebration of her achievements but a strong message about the potential that exists in rural government schools. Her story stands as a powerful testament to how talent, dedication, and timely recognition can break social and geographical barriers, allowing young children to dream big and achieve even bigger.

Bike taxi riders detained during protest at Vidhana Soudha

Bengaluru: A group of bike taxi riders protesting outside the Vidhana Soudha here on Saturday against the suspension of its operations following a Karnataka High Court directive, were detained by the police here. They sought urgent government intervention to lift the blanket ban and introduce a regulatory framework to govern bike taxi services. According to the police, soon after they gathered in front of Vidhana Soudha, they were detained and dispersed from the spot by the police. A case has also been registered against them for violating guidelines and attempting to protest in front of Vidhana Soudha without any prior permission. The riders urged the state government to introduce a clear policy that would allow them to resume operations while addressing safety and regulatory concerns. They stressed that bike taxis are an important part of Karnataka's transport ecosystem, providing jobs to thousands. Riders believe that with the right rules in place, bike taxis can continue to benefit everyone. Earlier this month, a division bench of the Karnataka High Court refused to stay an earlier single-judge order that suspended bike taxi services in the state. The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice Sreenivas Harish Kumar, was hearing appeals filed by Uber India Systems Pvt Ltd, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd (which operates Ola), and Roppen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd (which operates Rapido), among others. The companies had challenged the April 2 ruling that directed them to halt bike taxi services within six weeks. The deadline was later extended till June 15. The single judge had observed that such services cannot operate unless the state government notifies specific rules and guidelines under the Motor Vehicles Act.
