At Chilla border, Noida police starts checks for old vehicles entering city

Noida: As fuel stations across Delhi started refusing service to end-of-life (EOL) vehicles, traffic police on Tuesday launched an enforcement drive at the Chilla border to seize any such cars entering Noida, and impounded 23 from across the NCR city. Police officials said they will scale up the drive in the coming days. Diesel vehicles more than 10 years old, and petrol ones older than 15 years are categorised as EOL. They did not find any EOL vehicles at the Chilla border, though a Delhi-registered hatchback with an illegally installed CNG kit was seized. The car's owner Narendra Bansal, who lives in Jawahar Nagar in the capital, said he was driving a 2012 model and was planning to buy a new vehicle before his i10 crossed the 15-year mark in 2027. "We have started checking end-of-life vehicles coming from Delhi to Noida. If any such vehicle is found, we will seize it as per the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directions," a traffic police officer said. He added that the drive will continue, and similar checks will be introduced at other city borders with Delhi. Separately, Noida police used the integrated traffic management system (ITMS) to identify EOL vehicles across the city and in Greater Noida. "We seized 23 vehicles — 10 petrol and 13 diesel — in the city as a drive was carried out. It will continue," said Vinay Tomar, a traffic sub-inspector at ITMS Noida. Apart from weeding out EOL vehicles, Noida police's drive is a precursor to broader implementation of the ban that was enforced in Delhi from Tuesday. In Noida and four other NCR cities (Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Sonipat), petrol pumps will stop selling fuel for EOL vehicles from Nov 1. UP Police are planning to install automated number plate recognition cameras at 101 petrol pumps in Noida and 121 in Ghaziabad by the end of Oct. These cameras will be used to identify EOL vehicles at the filling stations, so fuel can be denied. Between Noida and Ghaziabad, there are an estimated 4 lakh end-of-life vehicles. Data by transport authorities shows there are nearly 1.7 lakh lakh petrol-run EOL vehicles, and 40,000 diesel-run ones in Noida. In Ghaziabad, 1.9 lakh end-of-life vehicles are fuelled by petrol, diesel EOL vehicles are logged at 50,000. Despite these figures, EOL vehicles aren't off the roads. Just over 3,000 EOL vehicles were impounded across UP in 2023, and this count was even lower — at 1,934 — in 2024. The ban on EOL vehicles was first mandated by the National Green Tribunal in 2015 and reinforced by the Supreme Court in 2018 to deal with the region's years-long air pollution crisis. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR announced earlier this year that petrol pumps in the capital city will need to refuse fuel to EOL vehicles from July 1. Owners of older vehicles said they had no option but to buy a new car. "I have a 2010-model diesel-powered Hyundai Verna. This car is still in good condition. However, due to the NGT and govt restrictions, I was worried about getting challaned or having my vehicle impounded. So, I decided to replace it," said Harinder Bhati, a resident of Sector Beta 1 in Greater Noida, who recently bought a Kia Seltos. Bhati said he could afford a new car, but many families in NCR would not be able to. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

E-rickshaw driver slapped with Rs 22k challan for overloading

Noida: Noida traffic police imposed a Rs 22,500 fine on an e-rickshaw driver for overloading on FNG Expressway. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed the vehicle near Parthala Chowk carrying furniture dangerously protruding from both sides and stacked on the roof. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The clip sparked online comments, with many users expressing concerns about traffic violations. Meanwhile, others empathised with the driver. "This man probably cannot afford to pay such a heavy fine. He should be warned and a nominal penalty should be imposed," wrote another user, Sanjay Kumar. After the video surfaced online, traffic police issued a challan of Rs 22,500 after scanning its registration number. The fine was imposed under sections 184 (dangerous driving) and 179(1) (disobedience of any direction given by authority) of the Motor Vehicle Act. GB Nagar has nearly 20,000 registered e-rickshaws that play a critical role in last-mile connectivity across the city in the absence of a city bus service. Data from the traffic police reveals that between Jan and May this year, over 24,000 challans were issued to e-rickshaws and nearly 2,100 were seized for various violations in the district. Vinay Tomar, a traffic sub-inspector, said this is the highest amount levied on an e-rickshaw driver for a traffic violation in Noida so far. "We usually do not impose such heavy penalties on e-rickshaw drivers, but in this case, the manner in which the vehicle was being driven created serious safety threats," Tomar said. On April 8 this year, a 40-year-old man and his minor son sustained injuries after their car crashed into a footpath near Botanical Garden metro station while trying to dodge an oncoming e-rickshaw driving on the wrong side. In another incident on May 15, 2024, two people died and three others were injured after a car collided with an overloaded e-rickshaw in Sector 33. All five passengers in the e-rickshaw suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Bike stunts on Noida Expressway trigger city's highest traffic fines

Noida: Traffic police fined a man Rs 53,500 for violating norms after a video surfaced of him and a woman performing a dangerous stunt on the Noida Expressway. This is the second highest challan issued to a biker for violations in Noida. Earlier this month, a man was seen doing stunts on a bike in Sector 112, and later issued the highest fine issued for traffic violation. "In that case we issued a challan of Rs 63,500 – which is the highest so far," said traffic sub-inspector Vinay Tomar. The rider was fined for dangerous driving, violation of traffic rules, disobedience of any direction lawful given by authority and violation of PUC norms. The five-second clip of the most recent incident, which was widely circulated on social media on Sunday, showed the duo riding without helmets, with the woman seated reverse on the fuel tank facing the man, while holding a helmet behind the driver's back. CCTV cameras installed on the expressway also recorded the act. Cops took suo-moto cognizance of the video and, based on the footage, traced the vehicle using the number plate and issued an e-challan around 1.40pm on Sunday. DCP (Traffic) Lakhan Singh Yadav said that the challan of Rs 53,500 was issued under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, including 181, 184, 184A, and 194D, which pertain to dangerous driving, riding without a helmet, disobedience of lawful directions, and other traffic violations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Police said that such reckless behaviour not only endangers the lives of the riders but also puts other commuters at risk. Strict enforcement measures are being taken to discourage stunts and rash driving on expressways, cops added. Between Jan and May this year, Noida traffic police issued nearly 11 lakh challans, of which over 6 lakh were for riding without helmets – a stark reminder of the ongoing challenge to enforce road safety regulations across the city. In 2024, traffic police issued 27 lakh fines – nearly 7,000 per day. The maximum number of fines were issued to bikers without a helmet (17 lakh), followed by jumping red light (1 lakh) and speeding (86,000). During the same period, 966 people were injured and 462 died in 1,165 road accidents in the district. Anurag Kulshrestha, president of road safety NGO TRAX, said that there needs to be stricter enforcement of traffic norms on the roads to prevent violations. "Also, the penalty should be high enough to make a deterrence among road users. Then if the challans are issued, there should be a proper recovery mechanism. In the current scenario, the issued challans remain pending and people continue to drive. In comparison, in foreign countries, in three violations the driving licenses are suspended for two years. Similar enforcement measures should be applied here," he said. Recently, a trend has emerged of bikers racing on the Noida Expressway during the weekends. Police usually stop these bike racers, who come here from Delhi and Gurgaon, and travel to the Zero Point via Noida Expressway. The high-speed bikers not only endanger their own lives but also raise safety concerns for others too while participating in an unconventional racing format on expressways, police said.
