Indiana Fever use recent win to hold strong in CBS Sports WNBA Power Rankings
With Caitlin Clark recovering from injury, the Indiana Fever are still finding ways to win games and remain among the upper tier of WNBA teams. The latest kudos belong to Kelsey Mitchell, who erupted for 35 points in the Fever's recent win over the Chicago Sky. That win pushed the Fever to 14-12 on the season and firmly in contention for the WNBA playoffs with their sights on a deep postseason run with a healthy Caitlin Clark. While Clark recovers, the Fever still belong near the top of the WNBA and CBS Sports' most recent WNBA Power Rankings confirm them, putting the Fever at No. 4 in the league. 4. Fever Caitlin Clark underwent further evaluations on her groin injury in New York which revealed no further damage, but she remains sidelined without a return date. Despite her absence, the Fever closed the week with two wins over the Aces and Sky to climb into sixth place and gain some much-needed breathing room in the playoff picture. Kelsey Mitchell poured in season-high 35 points against the Sky and now has four 35-point games, which is tied for ninth all-time. - Jack Maloney, CBS Sports Holly Rowe, ESPN's reporter, revealed a timeline for Caitlin Clark's potential return, coming in a few weeks, with the Indiana Fever wanting to be much more cautious than they have been in the past to avoid further setbacks. "As you look at their schedule, the third week in August provides a few more practice days where that seems like it's realistic. While she does remain day-to-day, that seems like a better timetable for a possible Caitlin Clark return," Rowe said about when Caitlin Clark could return. Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever hold serve in WNBA Power Rankings after All-Star break
The second half of the WNBA season is upon us, and the Indiana Fever are looking to rattle off some wins to reclaim their spot among the league's best teams with a chance to make a deep postseason run. Unfortunately, Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark is being held out of their first action back from the All-Star break due to injury as she tries to recover for the stretch run. Without Clark, the Fever have been able to stay afloat, battling to a 12-11 record overall, which is not the most indicative of the talent lining their roster. Despite that, the Fever are holding serve in the most recent WNBA Power Rankings from ESPN, coming in at No. 4. 4. Indiana Fever (12-11) Previous ranking: 4 Next seven days: @ NY (July 22), vs. LV (July 24), @ CHI (July 27) How much of the season's second half will Caitlin Clark be able to play? She has been ruled out for Tuesday, which will mark the 11th regular-season game she's missed this year. She was also sidelined for the Commissioner's Cup final on July 1 and the All-Star Game. She is only 23 with many years ahead, so if her groin injury requires significant rest, it's possible the Fever could take a conservative approach and sit her indefinitely. - Michael Voepel, ESPN Caitlin Clark will miss the Indiana Fever's game against the New York Liberty tonight, July 22. Her next chance at a return comes on Thursday, July 24, when the Fever host the Las Vegas Aces. Should the Fever be extremely cautious with Caitlin Clark, her first action could be this upcoming weekend on July 27 when the Fever head to Chicago to take on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever back near top of WNBA Power Rankings after two strong wins
The Indiana Fever are 21 games into their season, and even they may still be trying to figure out just exactly who they are. They have dominant wins under the belt, but they also carry some head-scratching losses, which culminate in a perfectly accurate 11-10 record. After consecutive losses to the Sparks and the Valkyries, which as a 19-point defeat, the Fever have ripped off back-to-back wins over the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings, both by double-digits. The mini-winning streak is seeing the Fever and star guard Caitlin Clark rewarded in CBS Sports' most recent rendition of their WNBA Power Rankings. Entering this week, the Indiana Fever sit at No. 4 in the rankings. 4. Fever The Fever's up-and-down season continued with a blowout loss to the Valkyries followed by double-digit wins over the Dream and Wings. Caitlin Clark returned to action after missing two weeks with a groin injury, and while her shooting slump has continued -- she's now 6 of 42 from 3-point range in her last six outings -- she's been excellent as a playmaker. Her 13 assists against the Wings were a season-high and she has 28 assists to eight turnovers in her first three games back. - Jack Maloney, CBS Sports The Fever get back in action on Tuesday, July 15, when they host the Connecticut Sun, who are 3-18, in a big chance to notch another victory and build their record. Following that, the Fever play back-to-back games on the road against the New York Liberty, who are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference Division, on July 16 and July 22. New WNBA Power Rankings Unkind to Angel Reese, Chicago Sky
New WNBA Power Rankings Unkind to Angel Reese, Chicago Sky originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 WNBA season is still in its early stages, but the top teams are beginning to separate themselves from the chasing pack. Advertisement Some may argue that the 9-0 Minnesota Lynx and the 8-0 New York Liberty already are on course to meet in the WNBA Finals for a second successive season, and it is no coincidence that these two teams are first and second respectively in ESPN's new WNBA Power Rankings published Tuesday. At the other end of the spectrum are struggling teams that are trying to reload for the future. The 1-9 Dallas Wings, without star rookie Paige Bueckers as of late, sit last in the new power rankings – and Angel Reese's Chicago Sky are situated 12th, one spot above the Wings. In Reese's second season, the Sky have started 2-5 under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. Though Chicago plays with the second-fastest pace in the WNBA, the Sky have the second-worst net rating in the league, averaging 94.9 points per 100 offensive possessions (12th in The W) while allowing 111.1 points per 100 defensive possessions (also 12th). Advertisement "The Sky are averaging 77.4 PPG, which is exactly where they finished last season, but are allowing a league-worst 90.1 PPG, up from 82.5 last year," wrote ESPN's Michael Voepel. "Unless they can improve on both ends, it will be tough to compete." Reese has struggled for consistency under Marsh, who came to Chicago with a strong background in player development from his time with the Las Vegas Aces. Reese is shooting just 30.9 percent from the field and averages 9.1 points per game; both figures are down from her rookie season. In addition, the Sky lost veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot to a season-ending knee injury on Saturday. Vandersloot, Chicago's all-time leader in games, points and assists, was regarded as a key presence in the locker room, and her absence deprives the team of its most gifted playmaker. On a more positive note, Kamilla Cardoso, picked four spots higher than Reese in the 2024 draft, holds Chicago's second-best scoring average at 10.9 points per game. The South Carolina product is the Sky's second-best rebounder behind Reese, averaging 6.1 boards per game. Advertisement But on the whole, the Sky have a lot of work to do to return to playoff contention with Cardoso and Reese as building blocks. New York Liberty Hanging Tough In WNBA Power Rankings
New York Liberty Hanging Tough In WNBA Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Trying to make some headway toward the top of the WNBA world right now looks like job No. 1 for the New York Liberty. They're still playing great ball early in the season, but so are the Minnesota Lynx. Advertisement New York is 8-0 in play right now, putting them firmly in the No. 2 spot in the latest WNBA Power Rankings, according to ESPN. It's not that Breanna Stewart and Co. aren't putting solid outings together. They are but cannot make any headway against early MVP favorite Napheesa Collier and the Lynx. Still, Stewart goes out all the time and gives 100% effort. In New York's lone game last week, where the Liberty beat the Washington Mystics 86-78, Stewart scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. It was her first double-double this season and, well, won't be the last. What about other Liberty players contributing to head coach Sandy Brondello's offensive schemes? Take a look at Kennedy Burke. She scored 12 points and was a hot 80% from the floor against Washington. Burke has put herself in some early contention for the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year award given out after the season. New York Liberty needs contributions from every player to keep on winning The Liberty dearly want to repeat as WNBA champions. They know that they have the players and team to make it happen. As long as Stewart keeps on rocking and the New York bench can pitch in, good things will keep on happening this season. Advertisement New York has a couple of games upcoming on their schedule. The Liberty hit the road to play the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night, followed by a home game against the Indiana Fever. Liberty fans will be disappointed if Caitlin Clark is unable to play. Clark has been dealing with a concussion lately, so her availability for that game remains up in the air. All the Liberty can do is continue to pile up victories, hoping it all leads to another ring ceremony for the team. The WNBA is in the middle of Commissioners Cup play at the moment. New York wouldn't mind getting that title, too. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 11, 2025, where it first appeared.
