New WNBA Power Rankings Unkind to Angel Reese, Chicago Sky

The 2025 WNBA season is still in its early stages, but the top teams are beginning to separate themselves from the chasing pack.

Some may argue that the 9-0 Minnesota Lynx and the 8-0 New York Liberty already are on course to meet in the WNBA Finals for a second successive season, and it is no coincidence that these two teams are first and second respectively in ESPN's new WNBA Power Rankings published Tuesday.
At the other end of the spectrum are struggling teams that are trying to reload for the future. The 1-9 Dallas Wings, without star rookie Paige Bueckers as of late, sit last in the new power rankings – and Angel Reese's Chicago Sky are situated 12th, one spot above the Wings.
In Reese's second season, the Sky have started 2-5 under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. Though Chicago plays with the second-fastest pace in the WNBA, the Sky have the second-worst net rating in the league, averaging 94.9 points per 100 offensive possessions (12th in The W) while allowing 111.1 points per 100 defensive possessions (also 12th).

"The Sky are averaging 77.4 PPG, which is exactly where they finished last season, but are allowing a league-worst 90.1 PPG, up from 82.5 last year," wrote ESPN's Michael Voepel. "Unless they can improve on both ends, it will be tough to compete."
Reese has struggled for consistency under Marsh, who came to Chicago with a strong background in player development from his time with the Las Vegas Aces. Reese is shooting just 30.9 percent from the field and averages 9.1 points per game; both figures are down from her rookie season.
In addition, the Sky lost veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot to a season-ending knee injury on Saturday. Vandersloot, Chicago's all-time leader in games, points and assists, was regarded as a key presence in the locker room, and her absence deprives the team of its most gifted playmaker.
On a more positive note, Kamilla Cardoso, picked four spots higher than Reese in the 2024 draft, holds Chicago's second-best scoring average at 10.9 points per game. The South Carolina product is the Sky's second-best rebounder behind Reese, averaging 6.1 boards per game.

But on the whole, the Sky have a lot of work to do to return to playoff contention with Cardoso and Reese as building blocks.

Sex toy infiltrates 2nd WNBA game, Fever star Sophie Cunningham weighs in

A second WNBA game has been plagued by a flying sex toy. On Friday night, a matchup between the Golden State Valkyries and the Chicago Sky was interrupted in the third quarter when the object flew across the court. The officials stopped the game to remove the lime green adult toy, and play continued. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham issued a PSA after the moment went viral on social media. "Stop throwing dildos on the court… you're going to hurt one of us," she wrote on X. Sky star Angel Reese jokingly blamed Fever guard Sydney Colson for the incident after Colson facetiously said it was her sex toy that had gone across the court earlier in the week. Golden State won the game, 73-66. Veronica Burton had 18 points in the victory. It's unclear whether anyone was ejected from the game, but it's the second instance over the last few days that a sex toy has interrupted a game, particularly a Valkyries game. On Tuesday night, it was Golden State going up against the Atlanta Dream. The Valkyries had rebounded a miss with about one minute left in the game when the object flew from the stands and down onto the court. The object bounced a few times away from the ballhandler and then toward the near sideline. The officials didn't immediately stop play once the object was thrown. The sequence continued until Golden State turned the ball over out of bounds.

Bears QB Caleb Williams detailed recent teaching moment from Ben Johnson

The Chicago Bears hired head coach Ben Johnson to get the franchise back to its winning ways. But he was also brought in to maximize quarterback Caleb Williams' potential. We're still in the pre-season phase of Year 1, but Johnson's already had an impact on the second-year quarterback, who's still learning his way in the NFL. During a recent appearance on ESPN 1000's "Waddle & Silvy," Williams discussed a teaching moment from the first-time head coach. Williams talked about a scenario during practice where he had the offense driving down the field, but the headset inside of his helmet went out. He admitted that it frustrated him. According to Williams, Johnson went up to him and talked to him about always having two or three plays in mind, just in case something like this happens. A franchise quarterback can't be getting frustrated. Otherwise, he will fold when things get hard. Williams believes that Johnson helped him avoid losing sight of his goal in this situation. "We were marching down the field and the headset starting going out on me and I got kind of frustrated," Williams said. "Ben came over to me after and he was like 'have a few plays in mind if that ever happens.' That's more of accountability to me and to this team and having a few plays that if the clock's running down, headset goes out or it's spiking or something - you can't hear the play call - it's a have a few plays, go out there and don't go out there palms up and complain and things like that. Keep going." The headset going out or being unable to communicate well in a loud road building can happen in the NFL. The best quarterbacks are ready for anything, even the most chaotic or stressful situations. Johnson will help Williams get there. This story is one of many examples. Dallas Wings are 0-3 against the Indiana Fever this season after losing 88-78 at AAC

For the second time this season, the Dallas Wings fell to the Indiana Fever at the American Airlines Center, losing 88-78 on Friday night. The game was moved to the AAC in anticipation of a Clark-Paige Bueckers showdown, but Clark missed her 15th game overall and the Fever improved to 8-7 without her. Despite the loss, star rookie Bueckers didn't disappoint the crowd of 17,857 – second highest in Dallas history – with 22 points, her 12th 20-point game as she increased her WNBA record for double-figure games. She was the only player in double figures for the Wings, who now are 8-21 on the season. Arike Ogunbowale had eight points and did not play in the fourth quarter. The Wings could seem to stop the quickness of the Fever's guard Kelsey Mitchell, who put up 23 points, and the frontcourt of Aliyah Boston and Natasha Howard, who had double-doubles. With a 9-0 burst in the second quarter, the Fever pulled away from a 22-22 tie at the end of the first quarter to lead 48-42 at the half. The Fever then upped the lead to 70-57 after three quarters. Dallas cut it to 75-69 in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Indiana scored the next five to all but seal it. Indiana, which tied a season high with 19 turnovers, had 12 3-pointers while Dallas didn't hit one until the fourth quarter and finished 2 for 15 – a season-low 13.3% from beyond the arc. The Wings went 24 for 25 from the foul line for a 14-point advantage, but the Fever were a plus-14 on the boards, plus-10 on the offensive end. The Wings are now 0-3 against the Fever this season. "No excuses. Proud of our resilience in the fourth quarter, but again, we need a toughness right from the tip," Wings head coach Chris Koclanes said during the post-game press conference when asked about the shots not falling in the second half of the game. "They came out stagnating us offensively, and we couldn't do anything or get any type of movement or separation, and on the boards as well. When you're missing shots, you have to play even harder," Koclanes continued. He told the media that his team has areas to continue to improve and grow. Wings forward Maddy Siegrist's return from a knee injury is set for the team's next matchup against the New York Liberty. She was initially expected to hit the floor against the Fever, but was ruled out ahead of the game. Siegrist has missed the last 17 games because of a right knee fracture. Siegrist, the NCAA Division I scoring leader ahead of Clark when she played for Villanova in 2022-23, was limited to 11 games in an injury-plagued rookie season two years ago. She has averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 11 games and had her only double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards in the game before she was injured, an 81-65 loss to Minnesota on June 8. Dallas returns to the road on Tuesday, Aug. 5, to face the New York Liberty. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT. Dallas has a 1-0 advantage in the series against New York. The Wings defeated the Liberty 92-82 on July 28.
