Plan backed to encourage more walking and cycling

Worcester City Council has approved a plan to encourage more people to walk and cycle rather than use their cars. The place and economic development committee gave the Active Travel Action Plan the green light on Monday, which will be implemented over the coming three years. The local authority's previous plan introduced the Beryl bike scheme, which saw about 52,000 cycle journeys in the city in the past year. "This plan is about making walking, wheeling, and cycling viable and attractive travel choices in Worcester, particularly for shorter journeys," said councillor Robyn Norfolk, chair of the committee. "The previous Active Travel Plan has shown how a project like the Beryl bikes can encourage active travel across our city." She said it would form part of a wider plan for Worcester, with the aim of making it a "healthy and active city". Proposals include a mobility hub being set up in the Arches walkway at Foregate Street. It would be home to a range of sustainable transport options, the council said. The new walkway links the train station, the Hive and the Riverside, and would have secure parking, as well as a Beryl bike bay. World's largest walking football tournament held in Glasgow

More than 900 players from 92 teams took part in the Walking Football Scottish Cup and Festival on Saturday, June 7, held at Glasgow Green Football Centre. The event, organized by Walking Football Scotland and sponsored by Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS), brought together participants from across the country to compete in multiple categories. It attracted high-profile visitors, including former Scotland manager Craig Levein and ex-players Peter Grant, David Hopkin, and Dougie Imrie. Gary Brewer, director of people and culture at CHSS, said: "It was amazing to see so many people come together and, once again, celebrate the Walking Football Scottish Cup and mark the world's largest one-day walking football event." The tournament is part of a two-year partnership between CHSS and Walking Football Scotland aimed at improving health outcomes for people over 50. Figures from Public Health Scotland have revealed that nearly 11,000 people in Scotland had a stroke last year. This remains one of Scotland's main causes of long-term disability. In addition, coronary heart disease remains Scotland's biggest killer, with 300,000 people in the country living with the condition. Activities, such as walking football, are designed to help people improve their physical activity and maintain a healthy heart. Walking football provides a gentler alternative to traditional football, helping participants stay active while reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Gary said: 'Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is committed to supporting the one in five people across the country with our conditions. "One of the best ways we can do this is by improving health outcomes for people across Scotland and playing walking football is a great way of contributing to reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. "Walking Football Scotland can reach a vast number of players, and we have been able to offer support to clubs, players and their families. "It's great to see the popularity of the sport continuing to rise and we hope our partnership with Walking Football Scotland continues to grow from strength to strength as well." This 30 minute walking technique has been scientifcally proven to 'better' your overall health. Over the years there have been many different fitness workouts or hacks trending, but one that has always stuck around is the goal of walking 10,000 steps a day. However, with work schedules and everyday life getting in the way, this can sometimes feel like an unreachable goal. In order to try and complete this task, some people have found a range of creative ways to integrate the exercise into their lifestyle. Some people choose to incorporate more walks into their free time or breaks, while others are investing in walking pads to use while working or watching TV. ‌ However, if you can't seem to find a way to include this fitness goal into your everyday routine, one fitness coach has revealed a solution. This specific walking method has been proven to be 'better' for your overall health and will only take half an hour, reports the Mirror. ‌ Fitness coach Eugene Teo, who boasted over 401,000 followers on TikTok, has shared a study that suggests another walking technique could be more beneficial for our health and wellbeing. In his video, he said: "You've probably heard that you should walk 10,000 steps a day. But in 2007, Japanese researchers discovered a walking technique that gives you 10 times the benefits in just 30 minutes." ‌ Developed by researchers in Japan, the Japanese Interval Walking Technique - otherwise known as Intermittent Walking or Interval Walking Training - involves intervals of fast and moderate-paced walking. This method is said to enhance your cardiovascular fitness, metabolism and overall health. Eugene explained: "So instead of a 10,000 step target, you switch between three minutes of fast walking and three minutes of slow walking for five total sets. "The results were surprising. Compared to hitting 10,000 steps, this walking protocol showed 29 times boost over aerobic fitness, a ten times improvement in leg strength, and a three times improvement in blood pressure." ‌ According to the study, high-intensity interval walking could combat the increase in blood pressure and decrease in high muscle strength and aerobic capacity that comes with ageing. Eugene went on: "10,000 steps is still a fantastic target, but it takes around one to two hours of intentional movement. This protocol is just 30 minutes. All movement is medicine, but if you're short on time or want to get the most bang for your buck, this is for you." ‌ In the video's caption, he shared: "I know I can't be the only one who looks at my step count at the end of the day and feel like a failure. Some days, I get around 2,000 steps. I still aim for at least 8,000 a day - but sometimes, life just gets in the way. "But even if it's only an extra 3000 steps, this simple 30 minute protocol on my walking pad can make a huge difference." Only uploaded three days ago, the video currently has 5.9million views. After watching the video, some TikTok users shared their thoughts on the new walking technique, while others asked questions. ‌ One user asked: "What speed is fast and what speed is slow?", to which another person replied: "the fast walking normally is fast enough to still keeping a conversation while walking without short in breath. Mine is around 5/6 km/ h." Another person added: "I think this whole thing is getting misconstrued, yall need to be active, like everyday and that will yield fantastic results. Some days you'll hit 5k some days you'll hit 20k just stay active."
