Wanderers veteran earns Comrades triple green number

The Citizen21-06-2025

Long-time Wanderers Athletics Club member Mark Hoffman crossed the finish line of his 30th Comrades Marathon on June 8, earning the coveted triple green permanent number, a milestone that reflects three decades of grit, sweat, and heart.
Hoffman's running journey started with a dare at the Long Bar after a few pints back in 1993. What followed was a lifelong passion marked by over 165 marathons and ultra-marathons. Despite battling a foot injury this year, and painful blisters mid-race, he powered through the 87 gruelling kilometres from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

'The race becomes incredibly tough around the 50km mark,' he said. 'But mind-power, and the support of fellow runners and spectators, carried me through.'
Though Hoffman didn't run with fellow Wanderers members this year, he never felt alone. 'Over 30 years I've made so many friends, and every year, new ones too.'
After 11 hours and 41 minutes on the road, Hoffman crossed the finish line with tears of joy, cheered on by his wife Estelle, his steadfast supporter for 23 of the 30 races.
Now, looking ahead to the 100th Comrades in 2027 and his 30th Two Oceans, Hoffman says he might take a break, but his story is far from finished.

Ouch! Checkers shades Pick n Pay's Springboks kit in cheeky ad

Two years after that, Checkers Sixty60-inspired Springboks away kit went viral for all the wrong reasons at the Rugby World Cup, the supermarket chain has mocked its rival Pick n Pay's controversial jersey design. The Boks unveiled their new look jersey, plus a colourful training one, at their first match of the year against the British Barbarians. Earlier this year, Pick n Pay became a tier-one sponsor of the national rugby team. However, the public's response has been less than favourable. In a social media post on Saturday, 28 June, Checkers threw shade at Pick n Pay over its Springbok match day design. Without mentioning them, the supermarket chain joined many rugby fans in criticising the new look. In the cheeky ad, a Checkers employee delivers 'kit feedback' to his manager. Addressing his superior, he says: 'The response to the new kit is not great. Someone told me it looked like a bumper sticker, but on the front! It seems like it was designed in paint during load shedding'. Checkers captioned the post, 'We're backing our boys no matter what', referring to the Springboks. Take a look at the ad… Meanwhile, the Springboks' colourful training kits on match day left much to be desired by South African rugby fans. Here's what a few X users had to say about it… @Jenmc_: 'These jerseys are going from bad to worse! I think the public should choose a jersey because these clearly cannot be left up to the professionals. Looks like someone took a bunch of hallucinogenics 🥴🫣 Stop making the brand look cheap'. @clueclucks: 'Who chose this jersey? 🙄😲👹🤢🤮' @BrendonWessels: 'That Springbok jersey would be hard to handle on a Brandy hangover'. As reported by H-Metro , Zimbabwean agent Gibson Mahachi recently confirmed that Ngwenya is on the verge of joining a South African club. 'I can confirm negotiations at an advanced stage with one of the PSL Clubs. An agreement likely to be reached any day from now,' Mahachi said.
