Ahead of internal quota report, Parameshwara calls meeting of Scheduled Caste Congressmen

Bengaluru: With the Justice HN Nagamohan Das Commission likely to submit its report on internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SCs) next week, home minister G Parameshwara has called a meeting of Congress legislators and ministers from various SC sub-castes to discuss the way forward. The meeting, tentatively scheduled for Saturday at Parameshwara's residence, is aimed at gathering opinions within the party to avoid confusion and ensure consensus on the sensitive issue. "We plan to have a discussion on various sub-castes and their opinion," Parameshwara said Thursday. "We had such a meeting before the survey. This is a continuation." When pointed out that Congress' high command had previously stopped a similar gathering, Parameshwara said, "We had planned a huge rally then and they asked us to postpone it. They (high command) will not stop meetings of legislators as it is within our authority." Asked whether this meeting would also include dinner, Parameshwara quipped, "Dinner or lunch or coffee meeting, we will do something." A similar dinner meeting in Jan involving SC and ST ministers and legislators had triggered speculation about a leadership shift. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo While Parameshwara and others dismissed it as a preparatory event for an SC/ST convention, the gathering had sparked talk of a possible Dalit chief minister for the state. This discussion has gained fresh traction following recent remarks by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, who expressed disappointment over not being made chief minister in 1999. Parameshwara had recently said: "There was nothing wrong if the party's national president returned to state politics." Meanwhile, BJP MP and former deputy chief minister Govind Karjol Thursday, who is spearheading demand for internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC), said Thursday they would launch a "Do or Die" movement if the state govt fails to act by Aug 11. Karjol said symbolic statewide protests will begin from Friday, and the govt will have until Aug 11 to issue an order providing internal reservation to SC communities. "If the govt does not, we will intensify our agitation from Aug 16. It will be a non-cooperation movement," he said. On Friday, Madiga community members together with other SCs and with support from several organisations, will demonstrate in front of deputy commissioners' offices at district headquarters and tahsildars' offices in taluks. Protesters will submit memoranda demanding internal reservation. Karjol accused the govt of going back on its pre-poll assurance on internal reservation, reiterating that a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Arun Kumar had ruled in 2021 that state govts had the authority to provide internal reservation.

No symptom, 3-mth-old at JJ with drug-resistant TB

Mumbai: Accustomed to treating complicated cases, state-run JJ Hospital's doctors have been left flummoxed by a three-month-old boy. The infant has become the facility's youngest patient of a drug-resistant version of TB that takes roughly 18 months to cure (although shorter 6-month regimens are now available), without showing any symptom. The child was breathing normally, taking regular feeds and gaining weight. Yet, when a doctor treating the child's mother for suspected TB sought his chest X-ray as part of the treatment protocol to screen household contacts for it, he was shocked. "The child's lungs had such increased opacity that it was obvious it was TB," said Dr Sushant Mane, associate professor and nodal officer for paediatric TB at JJ's National Center of Excellence for TB, who was called for advice. Patients with such extensive disease would struggle to breathe, eat and lose weight, but the infant showed none of the symptoms, thereby earning the tag of an unusual TB patient. He didn't even have a persistent cough, one of the telltale symptoms of TB. The family was advised to rush from their home in the western suburbs to JJ Hospital in Byculla. A gastric lavage was done at the seven-bed paediatric TB ward, and it showed that he had drug-resistant TB. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo Incidentally, his mother's TB tests have so far been inconclusive, although doctors have put her on TB treatment due to clinical signs such as coughing. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The child could also be among the youngest to get newer anti-TB drugs such as bedaquiline. "Like we do for every paediatric patient, we got the bedaquiline tablets pulverised at Byculla Pharmacy, which then prepares pudis of the prescribed dosage. Parents have to mix the packet's content with water or mother's milk," he said. (WHO has laid down protocols and dosages for anti-TB meds such as bedaquiline and delamanid for neonates as well, though many countries use dispersible versions of the tablets. ) On Monday, a fortnight after the diagnosis, the mother rushed the child to JJ Hospital as he was coughing. However, doctors didn't find any cause for concern. "He is tolerating the medicines well and has gained weight," said Dr Mane. After three months of treatment, doctors will again collect samples to check if the treatment has worked. Paediatric TB emerged as a challenge a decade ago, especially in Mumbai, which registers over 60,000 new patients every year. Of these, roughly 5,000 patients have the difficult-to-treat drug-resistant variations. "Roughly 8-10% of our patients are children," said BMC executive health officer Dr Daksha Shah. TB specialist Dr Vikas Oswal, who oversees the TB programme at BMC-run Shatabdi Hospital in Chembur, said, "If paediatric cases have increased in recent years, it's due to the availability of better diagnostic methods. " The main concern in paediatric TB, he said, is the dropping age of patients. "Earlier, we would be surprised to see two- or three-year-old patients, but now we see many below the age of 1."

Widow of martyr seeks euthanasia over ongoing land dispute

1 2 Jhunjhunu: In a plea for justice, widow of an Army martyr reached Jhunjhunu collector's office Tuesday to return her honours and request permission for euthanasia. Om Kanwar, the 55-year-old widow of Naik Surendra Singh, hailing from Chinchdoli village in the district, expressed her despair over an unresolved land dispute that has persisted for eight months, leaving her feeling harassed and neglected by the local authorities. Naik Singh was a member of the Indian Peace Keeping Force, who lost his life in Sri Lanka on May 29, 1998. In her memorandum to the administration, Kanwar detailed a troubling incident that occurred on July 19, 2025, when neighbours allegedly invaded her agricultural field with the intent to seize it. Despite filing an FIR, she claimed that the police have taken her case lightly, demanding witnesses that she, living alone, cannot provide. Kanwar's situation deteriorated further when a false molestation charge was filed against her elder brother-in-law's son shortly after she protested the encroachment. In her emotional memorandum, she wrote, "I am completely broken, exhausted from running around police stations and offices in the hope of justice." She reported ongoing threats from the encroachers, who have allegedly begun constructing buildings on her land despite a stay order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo The widow's anguish was palpable as she highlighted the struggles faced by a lone martyr's widow against powerful adversaries. "How can I, a lone martyr's widow, fight against these people?" she lamented. She requested that if justice is not served, the school named after her martyr husband in the village should be renamed, signifying her disillusionment with the system. Additionally, Kanwar requested permission for her son, Havildar Narpat Singh, currently stationed in Gulmarg, to visit her, as well as the right to have her last rites conducted on her land. "I have been wandering for justice for eight months. Now, I see no option other than euthanasia," she stated. Jhunjhunu Superintendent of Police, Brajesh Jyoti Upadhyay acknowledged the ongoing land dispute, confirming that cases had been registered from both sides and that the matter was currently under investigation. As the situation unfolds, the plight of Kanwar raises critical questions about the support and protection afforded to the families of martyrs in the state and the efficacy of the justice system in addressing their grievances.

"You got to check those boxes' — Kendrick Perkins leaves Chris Paul out of his top 10 point guards list

Chris Paul is a promising player (Image via Instagram / @cp3) A prominent NBA analyst's list of the top ten guards in the league did not include Chris Paul, the recently acquired star of the Los Angeles Clippers. Even though ESPN's Kendrick Perkins, who played against the said player in the AAU and then the NBA, considers him to be the real "point god," he places him in his Top 15 rather than the top 10. Recently, the analyst opened up about the same thing. Kendrick Perkins explains why Chris Paul falls outside his top 10 point guards The Los Angeles Clippers ' Chris Paul is seen by most as one of the greatest point guards ever in NBA history. The 40-year-old is now close to the end of his career as he begins his 21st season in the league. Kendrick Perkins made one comparison apparent, but he didn't provide a comprehensive list of those who rate higher than CP3. He has a higher opinion of the former Oklahoma City Thunder player Russell Westbrook. He stated during the most recent podcast episode Road Trippin': "I don't have CP3 ranked above Russell Westbrook. Like CP3 does a lot of things, changes the franchise, win a lot of games and things? Yes, absolutely. I would never take that away from him. Since he was drafted by the Pelicans, he changed that franchise…' He continued: "He goes to the Clippers, winning organization. Goes to the Phoenix Suns, winning organization. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo But when it comes to rankings, you got to check those boxes and you got to have the accolades. And when I say accolades, yes, championships and Finals MVP. But CP3 don't have one MVP." Originally broadcast on Basketball Network, Kendrick Perkins discussed why he does not consider Chris Paul to be one of the top ten point guards in NBA history: "I don't have him ranked above Russell Westbrook.' Chris Paul recently joined the L.A. Clippers (Image via Instagram / @cp3) He further stated that Russell Westbrook's triple-double record-breaking games and MVP run stand out. The Milwaukee Bucks came back with four straight victories after CP3 led the Phoenix Suns to within two games of the 2021 NBA championship. After winning Game 1, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder made it to the Finals in 2012 as well. However, it is not certain what additional accomplishments Kendrick Perkins wants for Chris Paul aside from a championship or a regular-season MVP. Meanwhile, the new L.A. Clippers' player will always be regarded as one of the NBA's most knowledgeable and significant point guards, regardless of this comment.
