Delhi's water lifeline set for overhaul with new master plan

NEW DELHI: To modernise Delhi's ageing water supply system, the Delhi government has launched a new Water Master Plan, which includes replacing old water pipelines, Water Minister Parvesh Verma announced on Saturday. During a visit to his constituency, Verma highlighted that many existing pipelines—some 40 to 80 years old—are a major cause of water contamination and frequent supply disruptions. 'There are several areas in Delhi where people are receiving polluted water, and the primary reason is the decades-old pipelines,' he stated. Verma criticised the previous administration, alleging that it had failed to improve the city's water infrastructure. 'They did not lay even a single new pipeline,' he said. He assured residents that the current government has moved beyond announcements and begun visible work on the ground. 'The budget has been passed, tenders approved, and in some areas, work is already underway,' Verma said, pledging timely and transparent execution of all projects. 'This government is only five months old, but in one year, Delhi's face will change,' Verma added. As part of his outreach, he visited several locations, including D-Block Gole Market, Gurudwara Flats in Rakabganj, and Type-II Flats in Sarojini Nagar. Meanwhile, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) recently launched a project to replace worn-out pipelines in East Delhi, shortly after the Delhi High Court criticised it for supplying 'sewage-mixed' water. The court's remarks came during a hearing on a public interest litigation filed by residents of Yojna Vihar, Anand Vihar, and Jagriti Enclave, who complained of contaminated water in their localities. The Delhi High Court had earlier expressed concern over the Delhi Jal Board's failure and asked how citizens could be expected to consume such unsafe water. It directed that all related work be completed by August, warning that any delay would be taken seriously. The pipeline upgrade initiative followed Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's directive in May, when she chaired a high-level Delhi Jal Board meeting. Gupta had called for urgent steps to overhaul Delhi's outdated water and sewer infrastructure, emphasising clean and safe drinking water as a basic right for all residents.

Delhi govt to come up with new Water Master Plan to replace decades old pipelines: Minister

With an aim to upgrade the aging water supply infrastructure in Delhi and replace all the old pipelines which are 40 to 80 years old, the BJP government is planning a new 'Water Master Plan', Water and Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Saturday. During a visit to various areas in New Delhi, the constituency he represents in the Assembly, Singh made the announcement and also highlighted the ongoing water crisis and deteriorating conditions of water infrastructure in the city. One of the root causes of the city's water problems, he underlined, is the extremely old pipeline system, which has not been upgraded in decades. 'There are a lot of places in Delhi where people face issues of polluted water. It is because water pipelines are 40 to 80 years old,' the Minister said. He also took aim at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, saying, 'The previous government did not lay even a single new pipeline. They neglected one of the most basic needs of the people — clean and safe drinking water.' Singh said that the current government has already taken concrete steps to overhaul the water and sewerage infrastructure across the Capital. 'We are preparing a new Master Plan for Delhi. New pipelines will be placed… the budget is passed and further sanctioned, tenders are passed, and work at some places has already started,' the Minister asserted. He also underlined, 'This government is only five months old, but I want to make you all believe that in one year, Delhi's face will change.' The PWD Minister assured residents that these infrastructure upgrades are not limited to announcements but are visible on the ground, with work already initiated in certain localities. He also instructed the departments concerned to ensure that timelines are met and that the work is carried out with full transparency and without any compromise on quality.

Delhi To Replace Decades-Old Pipelines To Tackle Water Contamination: Minister

Delhi: In order to tackle the rising complaints about water contamination in residential areas, the Delhi government will replace old water pipelines under a new Water Master Plan, Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma said on Saturday. During a constituency visit, Mr Singh pointed to the crumbling infrastructure and decades-old water pipelines as a key reason residents continue to receive polluted water. "There are a lot of places in Delhi where people face issues of polluted water. It is because water pipelines are 40 to 80 years old," the Water Minister told residents. Mr Singh said the current administration has already begun work under a new Water Master Plan. "New pipelines will be placed, the budget has been passed and further sanctioned, and tenders are passed," he said. Slamming the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for ignoring basic civic needs, Mr Singh said, "The previous government did not lay even a single new pipeline. They neglected one of the most basic needs of the people - clean and safe drinking water." Promising progress within a year, he said, "This government is only five months old, but I want to make you all believe that in one year, Delhi's face will change." While many residents welcomed the minister's visit, they also voiced skepticism about similar promises being made in the past. Responding to the long-standing issues faced by residents such as water quality, leakage, and low pressure, Mr Singh said he has directed the officials to stick to deadlines and ensure transparency in the execution of work. "I have asked officials to make sure that the work is done on time and without any shortcuts," he said. The visit comes amid rising complaints across the capital about discolored, foul-smelling water and frequent supply disruptions. As part of his public outreach, Verma visited areas including D-Block Gole Market, Gurudwara Flats in Rakabganj, and Type-II Flats in Sarojini Nagar.

Selangor developing comprehensive plan to secure water supply, says MB

KUALA SELANGOR: Selangor is developing a master plan to address various aspects of the state's water supply, including storage and catchment pond locations. The master plan will serve as a guideline to manage both dry and rainy seasons. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the Water Master Plan would cover all matters related to water supply comprehensively, including a long-term flood control system. According to Amirudin, the plan is expected to be completed within a year. "If there is less water, we will face supply problems, and if there is excess water, there will be floods. "This master plan will look comprehensively into both aspects," said Amirudin at an event where the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Package A and C project was handed over to Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd. Amirudin added that more than 100 water catchment ponds have been identified throughout Selangor, with most currently in the process of being gazetted as strategic storage areas. The state government's SJAM implementation will also be part of the Water Master Plan, with SJAM expected to ensure sufficient water supply for at least the next 50 years. On another matter, Amirudin said the Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) enactment would be streamlined to punish those caught polluting the environment. He added that punishment could include fines up to RM1mil and a mandatory jail term not exceeding three years. Amirudin noted that despite identifying pollution causes, the burden of proof often results in offenders escaping legal action. "Smell pollution, for example, takes more than 18 to 24 hours to reach the Selangor dam. "Meaning that if anything occurs in Batang Kali it would take 15 to 16 hours for it to reach here, and evidence becomes erased. "That is one of the challenges we face," he added. He said the streamlining of the enactment would allow state government enforcement to carry out thorough investigations and prosecutions. Amirudin mentioned that sometimes pollution is detected, but the source cannot be identified when the party causing the pollution stops the act. "So, we can counter the pollution, but unfortunately we cannot detain and prosecute," said Amirudin. On the SJAM, Amirudin said handing over the two packages complemented two other packages already in operation, guaranteeing continuous water supply to four million residents of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya. He added that RM320mil has been spent on the SJAM to ensure water supply to 1.2 million consumer accounts, even in the event of pollution.
