Delhi to replace 80-year-old pipelines under new Water Master Plan: Minister
During a constituency visit, the minister highlighted the urgent need for upgrades, pointing to pipelines that are 40 to 80 years old as a key cause of water contamination and supply disruptions.
'There are many places in Delhi where people face issues of polluted water. It is because water pipelines are decades old," Verma said.
He also criticised the previous government for neglecting infrastructure improvements. 'They did not lay even a single new pipeline," he claimed.
There was no immediate response from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The minister said the current administration has already taken concrete steps to address the crisis. 'The budget has been passed, tenders approved, and work has begun in some areas," he stated.
He assured residents that the efforts go beyond announcements, with visible progress underway in parts of the city.
'This government is only five months old, but in one year, Delhi's face will change," he added, promising timely and transparent execution of all projects.
As part of his public outreach, Verma visited areas including D-Block Gole Market, Gurudwara Flats in Rakabganj, and Type-II Flats in Sarojini Nagar. PTI SSM HIG HIG

India has secured the right to impose temporary trade safeguards under its newly signed free trade agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom, the commerce ministry confirmed on Saturday. The India-UK trade deal was signed in London on Thursday in the presence of senior leaders from both nations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart Keir Starmer. 'In this agreement, there are bilateral safeguard measures,' the ministry said in an official statement, as per news agency PTI. 'It allows India to temporarily increase tariffs or suspend tariff concessions on certain goods if there is a significant surge in imports from the UK that causes or threatens to cause serious injury to Indian domestic industries.' The safeguard provisions are initially valid for up to two years but may be extended for another two years if a formal investigation finds that continued protection is necessary for the affected domestic sector to recover and adjust. 'Thus, the total maximum duration of a bilateral safeguard measure is four years,' the ministry said. According to the agreement, if India applies these safeguards only for two years, the UK cannot take retaliatory measures. However, if extended to four years, Britain will have the right to respond. The pact also includes a provision for provisional safeguards in urgent or emergency situations. 'Provisional measures can be used in critical or emergency situations to prevent irreparable harm to domestic industry,' the ministry said, adding these can be enforced for up to 200 days based on preliminary findings, but must be followed by a comprehensive investigation. 'We have protected all the sensitive sectors of India... we have not opened for the UK (those areas).... Zero compromise and extensive benefits make it a phenomenal free trade agreement (FTA),' Goyal said, as per PTI. The minister also highlighted that the agreement would give a significant boost to exports of labour-intensive sectors like footwear, textiles, and gems and jewellery.

‘Serve country at borders, we'll take care of your family': Govt launches legal aid for soldiers
The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) unveiled a scheme on Saturday to provide free legal aid services for soldiers and their families under the 'Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana'. Under the scheme, legal service clinics will be set up in Sainik Welfare Boards across all states.(PTI) The scheme, which has been unveiled on the Kargil Vijay Diwas, was inaugurated at a conference in Srinagar by Justice Surya Kant, Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Under the NALSA scheme, legal service clinics will be set up in Sainik Welfare Boards across all states, PTI quoted Kuldeep Sharma, Secretary and Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of District Legal Services Authority, as saying. The free legal aid at these clinics will be provided to both retired and serving soldiers and their family members. The clinics will also have panel lawyers and para-legal volunteers of the legal services authority. This is the first time in the country's history that free legal assistance has been specifically provided to the families of soldiers. The decision has been taken in order to relieve soldiers from domestic legal burdens while they serve the country in harsh conditions, NDTV reported. The message for the scheme is: You serve the country at the borders, we will take care of your family at home. Soldiers posted at distant and inaccessible locations face difficulties following through on their legal cases involving domestic or property disputes, or land matters. Therefore, the NALSA will intervene in such matters to ensure that the soldiers receive proper representation in courts across the country. The launch was attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and J&K Governor Manoj Sinha. Following Operation Sindoor, Justice Surya Kant was moved by the sacrifices made by the armed forces, NDTV quoted sources as saying. He began looking into ways the judiciary could facilitate their well-being, thus leading to the decision. The NALSA Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana will be launched by Justice Surya Kant before he takes over as the next Chief Justice of India on November 24.

Akal Takht Jathedar summons Punjab minister Harjot Bains over Srinagar programme
Amritsar/Chandigarh, Jul 26 (PTI) Akal Takht's officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj on Saturday asked Punjab Minister Harjot Singh Bains to appear before five 'Singh Sahiban' (high priests) on August 1 in the wake of a controversy over a programme to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary the ninth Sikh Guru Guru Teg Bahadur in Srinagar. The development came a day after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) took strong objection to 'entertainment performances" at the event on Thursday held by the Punjab Government's Language Department, calling it a direct affront to Sikh religious values. The Jathedar of the highest temporal seat of Sikhs on Saturday also summoned the director of the state language department, Jaswant Singh. Meanwhile, Education Minister Bains said he will appear before the Akal Takht and will be bound to obey every order while accepting his moral responsibility. He said that whatever happened due to the negligence of the organisers, knowingly or unknowingly, in the event, he, as a Sikh cabinet minister, seeks forgiveness. Jathedar Giani Gargaj said that despite the passage of considerable time, neither the minister nor the director has clarified their position, nor have they issued any apology for hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community. In a statement, Gargaj emphasised that individuals holding constitutional positions have a greater responsibility towards society, and the silence of state officials on such a sensitive matter raises serious concerns. He said that it is for the first time in history that an event commemorating the martyrdom Shatabdi (centenary) of a Guru Sahib began with songs, dance, and entertainment, something entirely unacceptable.
