Unmasking family secrets: why 'We Were Liars' is the psychological thriller you can't miss

Shubham Maheshwari, Emily Alyn Lind, Esther McGregor and Joseph Zada in 'We Were Liars'. Image: X When I stumbled across 'We Were Liars', a new release on Amazon Prime Video recently, I wasn't expecting to be left in tears and still thinking about this powerful series, long after the credits rolled. Having not read the young adult novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, I was expecting to escape into a teenage summer romance, much like with shows such as 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' and 'Outer Banks.' But soon into the show, I was also pleasantly surprised to discovered that it resembled Nicole Kidman-esque psychological thriller such as 'The Perfect Couple' and 'Big Little Liars', while also featuring elements from "Succession" - with 'We Were Liars' also centering around a billionaire American family who are desperate for their patriarch's validation. But what truly set this story apart was the devastatingly emotional manner in which it placed family dynamics, greed and racism in the spotlight, forcing viewers to contemplate these and other issues in their own lives. 'We Were Liars' centres around teenager Cadence Sinclair (played by Emily Alyn Lind), the granddaughter of media magnate Harris Sinclair (David Morse) and one of the heirs to his multi-million dollar empire. She appears to be a picture-perfect teen who is arriving with her newly divorced mother, Penny (Caitlin Fitzgerald), to summer at their family's private island located off the Massachusetts coast. Called Beechwood Island, there she meets her grandfather, her grandmother Tipper (Wendy Crewson), her cousins, Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Mirren (Esther McGregor), as well as her aunts Bess (Candice King) and Carrie (Mamie Gummer). Shubham Maheshwari, Emily Alyn Lind, Esther McGregor and Joseph Zada in 'We Were Liars'. Image: X Dubbed 'Summer 16' after her age at the time of her visit, Cadence and her cousins, who are all around the same age as her, kick off the summer festivities. They are joined by their childhood friend, Gat Patil (Shubham Maheshwari), whom Cadence is secretly in love with. They party on the beach, live it up poolside and spend their days being young and carefree. The group formed such a close bond during the annual visits to the island since they were children that the group earned the nickname 'The Liars', given to them by their grandfather as a consequence of their mischievousness. But this image of the perfect family is quickly shattered when a flash forward shows a severely injured Cadence lying naked on the beach, alone and afraid. This disturbing turn of events leaves viewers desperate to know what could have led the teenager to end up in such a state. And more importantly, who could have possibly wanted to harm her? With her family members as suspects, secrets begin to unravel. 'We Were Liars' does a stellar job at discreetly giving viewers clues about each of the characters, allowing them to try and solve the mystery for themselves. Could it have been one of the cousins? Johnny has a drinking problem, and his family wealth is the only reason he isn't behind bars following a violent incident at this private school. Then there is Mirren, an aspiring artist with mommy issues who is always cast into the background. Could she have been envious of Cadene, the oldest grandchild who is eligible to inherit the family's entire fortune? Even Gat, who arrived on the island just days after spending months in India, where he awoke to the idea that he no longer aligns with Sinclair's racist and bullying tactics, is not as innocent as he seems. There are many other factors at play with the adults in her life. Cadence's mother is struggling with a dirty divorce battle with her father. Her aunt Bess's husband is mixed up with some shady business deals and her other aunty is a recovering addict who agreed to take her father's money in return for not marrying her partner, Ed (Rahul Kohli), who is deemed the wrong race by Harris for the Sinclair brood. And as the truth about what happened to Cadence is finally revealed, viewers are left with a reality that is far worse than even I could have imagined. With such a powerful and poignant ending, 'We Were Liars' excels in suspense, keeping viewers constantly guessing. The cast should also be commended, and although many of them are relatively unknown, with King the most familiar of the faces following her role on 'The Vampire Diaries', they each did their characters justice. Meanwhile, the use of flashbacks and flashforwards as well as the inclusion of a young romance to add depth and layer to the story also contributed to the intrigue of 'We Were Liars.' * I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

We Were Liars Season 2: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far

If you're still trying to emotionally recover from that We Were Liars Season 1 finale on Prime Video, you're not alone. Based on E. Lockhart's bestselling YA novel, the show had us hooked from the start—with its sun-drenched mystery, twisted family secrets, and that jaw-dropping twist. And now that all eight episodes have dropped, fans are asking the big question: Are we getting a Season 2? Let's break down everything we know (and what we're hoping for) about a potential second season—casting clues, release date buzz, and where the story could go next. Is 'We Were Liars' Season 2 Happening? As of June 2025, Prime Video hasn't officially renewed the series yet. But don't freak out just yet—things are looking pretty promising. The show shot straight to No. 1 on the platform after it premiered on June 18, and the creators are definitely interested in doing more. Showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie have said they've had 'endless conversations' with Prime Video about continuing the story. In an interview, Plec mentioned they're just waiting on viewership numbers to roll in before getting that green light. 'We're looking forward to the data working in our favor,' she teased. When Could We Were Liars Season 2 Arrive? Assuming Prime Video gives the go-ahead soon, a new season probably wouldn't drop until late 2026 or early 2027. Here's why: Season 1 started filming in June 2024 and premiered a year later. So if Season 2 starts production by mid-2026, we're looking at a similar release window. We Were Liars' Season 2 Expected Cast That totally depends on where the story goes. But here's what we can say based on that emotional finale. In Season 1, we followed Cadence Sinclair Eastman (played by Emily Alyn Lind ) as she unraveled the dark truth behind a fire that killed her cousins and boyfriend during one tragic summer on Beechwood Island. In the end, we learned she'd been seeing ghosts the whole time—Johnny, Mirren, and Gat were long gone, and Cadence had blocked out the truth. But then came the twist: Carrie (Cadence's aunt, played by Mamie Gummer ) also sees Johnny's ghost. That tiny moment totally changes the game—and hints at a Season 2 that dives into Carrie's story, addiction, and grief. So, we could definitely see Mamie Gummer and Joseph Zada (Johnny) return in a big way. Even though Johnny's dead, his ghost might be sticking around for more emotional haunting. Also likely to return: Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence, Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny, Candice King as Bess, and possibly Rahul Kohli, David Morse, and others—depending on flashbacks or timelines. That said, if Season 2 follows Lockhart's prequel novel Family of Liars (more on that in a sec), we may get an entirely new cast playing younger versions of the Sinclair sisters back in the 1980s. We Were Liars' Season 2 Potential Plot Season 1 covered the whole We Were Liars novel, following Cadence as she unraveled the truth about the fire. That final scene with Carrie and Johnny's ghost pulls straight from Family of Liars , so Season 2 seems poised to dive into that prequel. Set in 1987, it's Carrie's turn to spill her secrets, telling Johnny's ghost about a summer that shaped the Sinclair sisters' lives. Think family dysfunction, a mysterious death (their little sister Rosemary's drowning), and plenty of those dark, beachy vibes we love. But don't count out Cadence's story. Emily Alyn Lind hinted to Variety that Cadence's baggage doesn't just vanish, and her grandfather's threat to expose her could loom large. Plec called Family of Liars the 'Sinclair sister villain origin story' in Swoon , but they might weave in present-day drama too. There's also We Fell Apart , a new Lockhart novel out November 4, 2025, with new characters in the same Gothic world. It's not a direct sequel, but it could inspire some fresh twists. And are those ghosts real or just in their heads? The showrunners are keeping us guessing, which only makes me more excited. Ahmedabad Plane Crash

Loved 'We Were Liars'? There's A Prequel, 'Family Of Liars' — And It Could Be The Plot Of Season Two

This article contains spoilers for the ending of 'We Were Liars' For many viewers, the grown Sinclair sisters were one of the highlights of We Were Liars. And now, if that final scene of the series is anything to go by, we could be getting a lot more of them if a season two happens. Following the success of the 2014 book, We Were Liars, author E. Lockhart decided to expand the 'Sinclair universe' and wrote a prequel, Family Of Liars. The book tells the story of the Sinclair sisters when they were younger, notably the summer that older sister Carrie (Mamie Gummer) turned 17. The story is framed around Carrie talking to the ghost of her dead son, Johnny (Joseph Zada) — one of The Liars from We Were Liars — and telling him everything that happened. While a second season of We Were Liars has yet to be confirmed, the final scene of its first outing, shows Carrie turning back to addiction and talking to Johnny, which seems to confirm that any follow-up would be faithful to the plot of the prequel book. Further, one of the showrunners for the screen adaptation, Carina Adly MacKenzie, hinted to Variety that any future series would involve the prequel book: 'The great thing about this show is that the first season has a satisfying, powerful ending. So I want people who generally don't tune in to the first season because they're afraid it's going to get canceled, to know that they're safe to watch this show, and if it doesn't get a second season, you've still got a whole story. But also, Emily wrote three books and we love this world. We love our cast. We'd love the opportunity that exists for more story, so we're hopeful that we'll get to come back and do more. But also, should this be a limited series, I think it's a beautiful story.' The third book MacKenzie noted is We Fell Apart, an upcoming novel which will be released in November. The story finds eldest sister Carrie telling her son, Johnny, stories of when she was young - before explaining to him the summer she turned 17, and the Sinclair sisters themselves became liars. Telling the story of how Carrie became addicted to medication after a routine jaw operation, the tale picks up just after the death of the youngest Sinclair sister, Rosemary, with the whole family reeling privately, but, in true We Were Liars fashion, trying to put on a front as 'American royalty'. The story continues to flesh out the secrets of the Sinclair family that are hinted at in We Were Liars' first season and shows the reasons the sisters are the way they are — it's a must-read for fans of the first book (and show).
