Gastroenterologist explains how fibre can make your constipation worse if you don't follow this key step
Fibre is often a go-to for many people to treat their constipation. But did you know that consuming fibre can go wrong for you if you don't follow an important step? Also Read | Woman who dropped 90 kilos, shares 3 mistakes that slowed down her weight loss: 'Not focusing on nutrition' According to a gastroenterologist, Dr Wendi LeBrett, MD (gastroenterology), fibre can become a concrete block in your stomach if you don't drink enough water with it. In an Instagram video posted on June 6, Dr Wendi explained how fibre harms you more if you don't consume it the right way. In the video, Dr Wendi showed a glass filled with psyllium fibre and demonstrated that when there is not enough water, it turns into a hard, concrete-like substance. She did this by overturning the glass of psyllium and showing that it didn't move even a smidge inside the glass. A post shared by Dr. Wendi (@socalgastrodoc) According to the gastroenterologist, psyllium fibre is her favourite way to treat constipation. But, she cautioned that if you don't take enough water with it, it forms this concrete-like substance in your gut and just makes your constipation worse. She explained, 'Fibre supplementation is one of the best ways to treat constipation, but often people experience bloating, gas, and constipation - not drinking enough water is often the culprit.' According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), dietary fibre interacts with water by means of polar and hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding and enclosure. The results of these interactions vary with the flexibility of the fibre surface. So, what happens when you consume dietary fibre that is soluble? Per the Mayo Clinic, soluble fibre, which dissolves in water, forms a gel-like material in the stomach that slows down digestion. Per a report by Johns Hopkins Medicine, this gel also acts as a natural stool softener, making bowel movements easier and more comfortable to pass. Meanwhile, soluble fibre is found in oats, peas, beans, apples, bananas, avocados, citrus fruits, carrots, barley and psyllium. It can help lower cholesterol and blood sugar. Gastroenterologist shares 4 ways you can reverse fatty liver: Drinking coffee to weight loss
Can fatty liver be reversed? According to Dr Wendi LeBrett, MD, gastroenterologist, reversing fatty liver is possible. But one has to practise a few lifestyle changes to make it possible. For the uninitiated, fatty liver disease is a condition in which there is an increased build-up of fat in the liver. Also Read | Nephrologist shares signs to know if your kidneys are not healthy: 'Weight loss and poor appetite to swelling in…' In a video shared on March 9, Dr Wendi talked about four things you can do to improve your fatty liver. She also demonstrated what a healthy liver looks like, what happens when you start to accumulate fat in your liver and develop fatty liver, and what happens as your liver starts to scar from having fat in it. A post shared by Dr. Wendi (@socalgastrodoc) According to the gastroenterologist, there are two main causes of fatty liver. 'The first is alcohol use, and the second is metabolic syndromes, conditions that predispose you to having excess fat on your body,' she stated. So, what can you do for fatty liver? Here are the steps Dr Wendi suggested: According to the gastroenterologist, even if it's just once in a while, one or two drinks a week, you need to stop. According to the NHS (National Health Service), drinking a large amount of alcohol, even for just a few days, can lead to a build-up of fats in the liver. This is called alcoholic fatty liver disease, and is the first stage of alcohol-related liver disease. Dr Wendi explained that weight loss has been shown to improve fatty liver. Per the expert, exercise independent of weight loss has been known to reverse fatty liver. 'Even if you don't lose weight, exercise itself can improve fatty liver,' she added. Research studies have shown that drinking coffee, whether decaf or regular, can prevent fatty liver from progressing to fibrosis, she stated. According to a May 2015 study that researched how coffee prevents liver fibrosis, coffee consumption provides protection against liver fibrosis induced by well-established chemical models. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the estimated global prevalence of NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) among adults is 32 percent and is higher among males (40 percent) compared to females (26 percent). Therefore, it is necessary to take lifestyle measures that can help you reverse or prevent the disease. Orange Cat Carries Around Tiny Stuffed Animal in His Likeness and It's Too Sweet
Just like kids, sometimes our pets have security blankies or toys they carry around everywhere. Leroy Brown is an orange cat who has a favorite stuffie - it's an adorable little kitty that looks just like him! The video starts with Leroy walking down the stairs with his emotional support kitty in his mouth. His mom, Wendi, says he always has his baby, and we absolutely love this cute video! Wendi has posted other videos of Leroy with his baby, too. He really does always have his emotional support with him, and it's so sweet to see how gentle he is with it. @Madison <3 agreed, "Awww I didn't realize it was a stuffed kitten until the end MY FREAKING HEART!!! He needs a kitten ASAP!!!"Orange cats have big, quirky personalities and are really like the class clowns of the cat world. While we all refer to them as orange cats, they are not a distinct breed. They're actually just orange tabby cats, but tabbies aren't a breed of their own either! When people refer to tabby cats, they're really talking about their common coat pattern - their striped coats. Do all orange cats look the same? There are some characteristics to look for. shares, "Though each orange tabby is different, tabbies in general have specific characteristics that are easily identified. These include banding on the legs and tail, an M-shaped marking on the forehead, white or dark lining around the eyes, pigment on the paws and lips, thin 'pencil' lines on the face, and a pale color on the chin and belly. Did you know that most orange cats are male - about 80% of them are. explains the 'Ginger Gene', 'The captivating orange fur of these cats is due to a gene called 'O' (for orange), which is located on the X chromosome. This gene determines the production of orange pigment, called pheomelanin, in the fur. Interestingly, male cats only need one copy of the 'O' gene to display an orange coat, while females must have two copies. This unique genetic arrangement results in the majority of orange cats being male.' We hope Leroy's mom keeps sharing cute videos of him. He always makes us smile with his antics!
