They could also pick high school prospect Ethan Holliday, who's arguably the best player in the draft and the son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday (and brother of former No. 1 pick Jackson Holliday). Red Sox cleanup hitter considered bunt before ‘special' homer vs. old team

NEW YORK — Red Sox cleanup hitter Carlos Narváez considered doing something cleanup hitters hardly ever do before his at-bat in the sixth inning with runners at first and second base and no outs. The Red Sox were trailing the Yankees, 3-2. Advertisement 'I was in my head a little bit to bunt there to be honest,' Narváez said. But he quickly reconsidered and instead blasted a go-ahead three-run home run against his old team. The Red Sox won 11-7 here at Yankee Stadium. I talked to Huddy (third base coach Kyle Hudson) and it's like, 'OK, I'm just gonna be aggressive.' ... I found myself in a two-strike approach.' His goal then became just to put the ball in play. Behind in the count 1-2, Narváez connected on an inside 94.6 mph four-seam fastball from Yankees left-handed starter Carlos Rodón. He pulled it 372 feet to left field. It left his bat with a 101 mph exit velocity. Advertisement 'Just happy I found some barrel,' Narváez said. The Red Sox acquired Narváez in a trade with the Yankees at the Winter Meetings in December. He initially signed with New York as a 16-year-old Venezuelan amateur catcher in 2015. He spent almost a decade in their organization and made his major league debut with the Yankees last season. 'Special,' Narváez described the home run. Manager Alex Cora said he felt like Narváez was 'trying hard the whole weekend.' Cora considered giving the rookie a day off Sunday. 'Today I was a little bit hesitant to play him,' Cora said. 'But decided kind of like, 'You know what? He can play three and then Connor (Wong) can play on Monday.' Put (together) some good at-bats. Went the other way, worked the count and he took a gamble there with that pitch and he pulled it in the air and that was a huge one for us.' Advertisement Narváez admitted he felt 'a little bit' like he was trying too hard early in the series. He went 0-for-6 in the first two games but he also drew three walks and scored three runs. He reached base three times (two hits, one walk) in the finale. 'Anxious a little bit like coming into this ballpark again,' he said. 'To be honest, I only was the first two at-bats (Friday). ... I got my walks in the first two games. That's huge for me. Like I said, I just want to keep the line moving. The walk is a way to do that.' How's ex-Red Sox prospect traded to Yankees for Carlos Narváez doing?

The Red Sox and Yankees will play for the first time this season on Friday at Yankee Stadium. The AL East rivals don't often make trades with each other, although deals between the two sides have been more common this decade. Advertisement Boston and New York traded with each other only twice from 1997-2020. But they have completed four trades since 2021. The latest came at the Winter Meetings in December when Boston acquired catcher Carlos Narváez for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and $250,000 in international bonus pool space. MassLive ran a feature Thursday on Narváez who discussed the Yankees being the only team to offer him a contract when he was an amateur catcher in Venezuela. It initially looked like only a minor trade for a depth catcher who would compete to be the backup catcher on the 2025 Opening Day roster. Narváez not only won a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he's now overtaken Connor Wong as Boston's starting catcher. The 26-year-old is hitting .288 with a .356 on-base percentage, .456 slugging percentage, .812 OPS, five home runs, 12 doubles, 19 RBIs, 24 runs, 17 walks and 43 strikeouts in 47 games (177 plate appearances). Advertisement He's also been one of the league's top defenders behind the plate. He's in the 97th percentile in blocks above average (6), 94th percentile in framing (4) and 81st percentile in caught stealing above average (2). It looks like the Yankees also did well in the trade. Rodriguez-Cruz, a 21-year-old righty who reaches the upper-90s with his fastball, has made nine starts for High-A Hudson Valley this season. He is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 57 strikeouts and 22 walks in 48 innings. He's held opponents to a .177 batting average. Lefties are batting .140 against him while righties are hitting .213. He had 19 swings and misses in a game April 25 against Asheville, leading all High-A pitchers in whiffs that day. He had 17 in a start against Wilmington on April 18. Advertisement Boston initially drafted Rodriguez-Cruz in the fourth round (105th overall) out of Leadership Christian in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Baseball America ranked him the Yankees' No. 16 overall prospect entering 2025. Narváez said Wednesday, 'Super proud to wear this uniform now with Boston. At the same time, I always say that I'm super thankful for what they (the Yankees) did for me. I grew up with them. It was nine years with them. So I'm thankful for what they did for me but at the same time, I've got a new role with a new team. The amazing thing is it's Boston. So super pumped for this trip (to New York).' Red Sox reactions: Carlos Narváez hits go-ahead homer vs. team that traded him

NEW YORK — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 11-7 win over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Sunday: 1) Carlos Narváez — who the Red Sox acquired in a trade with the Yankees at the Winter Meetings in December — blasted a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning. His 372-foot shot to left field put Boston ahead 5-3. Narváez initially signed with the Yankees as a 16-year-old Venezuelan amateur catcher in 2015. Advertisement 2) The Red Sox improved to 32-35 while the Yankees dropped to 39-25. Boston took the three-game series, 2-1. 3) Narváez's three-run blast was part of a five-run sixth inning for Boston after the Yankees had gone ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on DJ LeMahieu's solo home run. He connected on a 94.6 mph four-seam fastball from Carlos Rodón. 4) Boston's rally also included a Jarren Duran two-run single (110.2 mph) that made it 7-3. 5) Rookie Kristian Campbell entered with just two extra-base hits in his past 29 games (112 plate appearances) dating back to April 30. But he hit an opposite-field 349-foot two-run home run off Rodón in the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2. Advertisement 6) Red Sox starter Hunter Dobbins went 5 innings and allowed three runs, four hits and no walks while striking out two. 7) Boston's five-run sixth inning could have been extended had Rafael Devers hustled out a slow ground ball to second base. He slowed down and was thrown out at first base for the final out. 8) Abraham Toro — who had offers from only the Red Sox and Yankees as a free agent this past offseason — crushed a 391-foot, 104.3 mph solo home run to right field in the eighth to put Boston ahead 8-5. He also doubled twice. 9) Trevor Story — who has struggled to hit fastballs this season — connected on a 96.8 mph four-seam fastball from Jonathan Loáisiga and hit it over the short porch in right field (353 feet). He went back-to-back with Toro, making it 9-5 in the eighth. Advertisement 10) The Red Sox return to Fenway Park to host a three-game series against the Rays beginning Monday. Righty Brayan Bello will pitch for Boston opposite Rays righty Shane Baz. More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Yankees-Braves Trade Proposal Would Swap Anthony Volpe for $35 Million All-Star

Even as more baseball fans embrace analytics and sabermetrics, consider New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe the prime example of why certain metrics don't always tell the whole story. Advanced statistics have favored Volpe since his 2023 debut, with him posting 8.2 bWAR over his first 364 games. However, the 24-year-old shortstop doesn't always pass the eye test, with his .228 career average and .672 OPS often infuriating the Yankees' loyal fanbase. Advertisement The Yankees have stuck by Volpe throughout his struggles, from missed opportunities at the plate to inconsistent fielding. But if the Yankees ever considered moving in another direction, they'd be wise to call the Atlanta Braves about a potential Volpe-Ozzie Albies swap. To be clear, there have been no credible trade rumors thus far regarding either player. Volpe entered Tuesday with a career-high .745 OPS over 192 plate appearances, and his 1.5 bWAR trails only Aaron Judge (3.7) among Yankees hitters. Albies, a three-time All-Star and lifelong Brave, owns a .225 average, five homers, and 17 RBI in 47 games. The 28-year-old has posted 0.2 bWAR and a career-worst .616 OPS across 204 plate appearances on a Braves team finally finding its momentum—and that in itself could inspire Atlanta to propose a bold trade. Advertisement Albies only has two seasons remaining on the seven-year, $35 million extension he inked in 2019. However, the Braves—or, alternatively, any team that acquires Albies in the coming months—have two team options, each with a $4 million buyout. Trading Volpe, who is under team control through 2028, is incredibly dangerous. The Yankees don't have reliable depth behind Volpe, and the thought of moving starting third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera to short ended last week following a severe ankle injury. Albies has only played second base in the majors, which would likely force Jazz Chisholm back to third. Chisholm, a natural second baseman, primarily played the hot corner after joining the Yankees last summer. Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie AlbiesBrett Davis-Imagn Images Although Chisholm has experience at shortstop, he hasn't played there since 2021. It's unclear whether or not he'd consider moving back to shortstop if the Yankees acquired Albies. Advertisement Trading Volpe also opens the door for top prospect George Lombard Jr. to take the reins at shortstop as early as next year. That's excellent news for Yankees fans, even as Lombard struggled to a 6-for-33 start at Double-A Somerset. The thought of Albies in pinstripes is tempting, especially with the two club options. However, it wouldn't be worth giving up Volpe, at least not this season. Now, if the two teams were to have that conversation at the Winter Meetings, that's a much different conversation...
