Now in its second year, the EA Sports College Football franchise is a good way to get at least a basic, cursory idea of how each college team will be in the season. Or at least how prognosticators feel about the field.
Michigan football will likely have a punishing defense but is revamping the offense -- and there's no telling just how quickly the Wolverines will be able to put together a unit that's significantly more functional than what we saw on the field in 2024. Still, EA Sports has a lot of faith that the maize and blue will be significantly improved compared to last year, with Michigan being ranked at No. 15 overall in the soon-to-be-released EA Sports College Football 26 video game.
The rankings for the top 25 teams were revealed on Friday. Via On3:
In the actual season, Michigan football plays just two of the listed ranked teams -- No. 17 Oklahoma in Week 2 and No. 3 Ohio State in Week 14.
Of course, this is just a barometer for the season, or, if you're playing the video game, shows you the strength of the team if you choose to play as the Wolverines. The new EA Sports College Football 26 game is set to be released on July 10, with the deluxe edition getting a three-day early digital release on July 7.

Seeking first LPGA Tour victories, Schmelzel and Valenzuela team to take Dow Championship lead

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) — Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela took the third-round lead Saturday in the Dow Championship, shooting a 2-under 68 in alternate-shot play to move into position for their first LPGA Tour victories. Schmelzel and Valenzuela had a 13-under 197 total at Midland Country Cup heading into the better-ball final round. They opened with an alternate-shot 68 on Thursday and had a best-ball 61 on Friday. 'You're kind of on pins and needles most of the day, just hoping you don't get your partner in trouble,' Schmelzel said. 'Just super solid. I feel like we had really good attitudes throughout the entire day. I think both of us took every single shot as it came.' The teams of Jin Hee Im-Somi Lee (68) and Manon De Roey-Pauline Roussin-Bouchard (69) were a stroke back. 'I'm very proud of us,' De Roey said. 'We hung in there. We fought until the end.' Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire, the second-round leaders after a 60, birdied the final two holes for a 72 that left them tied for fourth at 11 under with Lauren Hartlage-Brooke Matthews (66) and Sung Hyun Park-Ina Yoon (67) . Kupcho won in 2022 with Lizette Salas. 'Just try and go low and try and post a number early and see what happens.' Maguire said. 'I think it was nice to see two putts go in at the end.' Lexi Thompson-Meghan Kang (68) and Rio Takeda-Miyu Yamashita (67) were 10 under. Defending champions Ruoning Yin and Jeeno Thitikul, both among the top five in the women's world ranking, were 9 under after a 67. Schmelzel and Valenzuela parred the final seven holes. They had four birdies and two bogeys in the round. 'I feel like we had a really good day,' Valenzuela said. 'Our goal in foursomes was just to get a couple under or maybe a little bit better. We had a few mistakes, and that's going to happen in this format. We also did a lot of really good stuff.' ___ AP golf:

EA Sports releases top offenses for College Football 26

EA Sports has given gamers plenty of content this week in the lead up to College Football 26's July 10 release. The video game developer released the toughest places to play in the soon-to-be-released game, as well as the top 25 overall teams. With the top overall teams already known, EA Sports also released the top offenses in the game, and Colorado is not among them. Arizona State leads the way for the conference with a 91 rating, tied for the best in the game alongside national powers such as Texas, Penn State and Ohio State. The Sun Devils are led by quarterback Sam Leavitt and talented wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, so their high ranking is not surprising. BYU (87), Baylor (87), Texas Tech (87) and Iowa State (85) also cracked the list. Despite featuring a dynamic wide receiver corps and former Conference USA MVP Kaidon Salter at quarterback, Colorado was notably absent from the rankings. With the game set to launch in just a few weeks, the Buffaloes could land just outside the rankings with an offensive rating in the low 80s — a respectable starting point, but one that leaves room to improve. There are question marks surrounding Colorado's offense, most notably at running back and tight end, while several projected starters are also unproven at the Power Four level. To improve their standing in the game, Colorado will have to develop at least a mediocre running game and a passing game that at least somewhat resembles last year's talented group. The run game will benefit from a revamped offensive line led by All-American Jordan Seaton and Power Four transfers Zy Crisler (Illinois), Larry Johnson III (Tennessee) and Mana Taimani (Ole Miss). A lackluster offensive line over the past year, plus a bunch of unproven players, likely contributed to EA Sports' ranking of Colorado's offense. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
