How ‘no tax on tips' could help, hurt Ohio workers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – On the campaign trail, then-candidate Donald Trump touted his plan to end taxes on tips; now, millions of workers across the country are reaping the benefits of Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' as 'no tax on tips' takes effect. Under this temporary tax exemption, tipped workers can now deduct up to $25,000 of tipped income from their taxes. From that point on, tips will be federally taxed. 40-plus cars broken into outside Columbus hotel Cate Rinehart has worked at Stav's Diner since it opened nine years ago. She believes this will benefit her in the long run, as tips are her primary source of income. 'Another $12,000, or whatever it is a year, in my pocket will make a big difference,' Rinehart said. 'I'm a single person. I do everything by myself. I don't have a partner or anything, so it's all on me, so it's going to make a big difference in my life.' Rinehart has been in the service industry for 30 years. 'I basically don't get a paycheck,' Rinehart said. 'We make less than minimum wage, so all of my actual wages go to paying taxes, so I'm only working for tips. That's the only way I can pay my bills.' Halee Wray is a bartender at Boston's Pizza Restaurant & Sports Bar. She also relies heavily on tips. Driver who stopped on I-71 before exit charged in three-car wreck 'We got paid yesterday and I have about $300 deductions that have been taken out that my hourly did not cover because of the taxes that I'm paying on my tips,' Wray said. 'But my hourly is not enough to cover that amount, so I already know from the last two weeks, I need to put away $300 because at the end of the year, that's going to come back up on my taxes that I will owe.' Wray said she sees the benefits of no tax on tips. 'I claimed a bunch of money for the last two weeks because I got that on my tax tips,' Wray said. 'But my hourly is $5.25. So that, you know, even if you're working 50 hours, it's not paying enough to make up for the tips.' Wray said she's concerned this move has caused a lot of confusion. 'To hear the words and the lingo 'no tax on tips' does not mean we're not paying our taxes, and I know there's a lot of miscommunication about that,' Wray said. 'People have been writing on their receipts, like, 'Oh you don't have to pay taxes on this.' I'm like, 'I do, though, and only up to $25,000, and if you think that I'm only making $25,000, you're wrong.'' How a typo could mean Ohio's state tree isn't the buckeye Under the bill, both cash and credit card tips are included. Workers can deduct up to $25,000 in tips if they make less than $150,000 a year. 'I've always claimed all my tips, cash and credit card, because you can't buy a house or cars without that,' Rinehart said. 'So, it's going to make a big difference for me.' The tax break applies only to federal income taxes. Payroll taxes, which pay for Social Security and Medicare, would still be collected, along with state and local taxes. This applies for all tipped workers, from servers, to hairdressers, nail technicians, and Uber drivers. 'I think it's going to help, especially a lot of the younger people, in the long run, too, being able to put a little bit more money back to be able to buy homes and things like that,' Rinehart said. 'That's a big chunk of change going out all the time, and when you're not really making a salary or anything, people don't realize how much it does affect us.' It also allows workers to write off overtime pay up to $12,500 per year. Just like tipped workers, the amount they can deduct reduces if they make more than $150,000 per year. Westerville's Antonio's Pizzeria to close after 'irreconcilable differences' with landlord 'A lot of us, as service industry employees, at the end of the year, comes and we owe thousands of dollars back on our taxes because it's just, our hourly is so low that it's not covering our taxes,' Wray said. 'So we're making decent money here, but at the end of the year, we're saving to pay our taxes.' Wray said she has already scheduled an appointment with a tax expert because she anticipates more hurdles when filing for taxes next year than in years past. The provision is in effect from now through 2028. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Felon leads cops on 4-hour long slow motion chase with speeds of 7 mph in stolen car

A police chase went at a snail's pace early Tuesday morning when an armada of cop cars – their sirens blaring and their lights flashing – followed a fleeing felon in Tennessee at speeds as slow as 7 mph, authorities said. Video captured by Fox17 shows the surreal scene as the fleeing suspect, Katlyn Wray, 28, putters along on apocalyptically empty highways in Nashville while a fleet of police cars crawls behind her. When officers finally caught up with Wray and asked why she didn't just pull over, she replied: 'I'm already on paper for ten years anyway,' according to reports. Advertisement Katlyn Wray was accused of causing a slow-speed police chase early Tuesday morning in Nashville. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department The dramatic but slow-as-molasses chase started just after 3 a.m. when Metro Nashville Police officers found Wray asleep behind the wheel of a stolen Nissan Altima, according to reports. As four officers approached, Wray woke up, threw the car in reverse and motored away, according to WTVF. Advertisement Officers laid out two sets of spike strips to catch her. Wray hit both of them, flattening her front and back tires, but that didn't stop her, according to reports. She continued to drive on the flat tires for nearly four hours while cops calmly pursued her – traveling at speeds anywhere from 7 mph to a whopping 15 mph, according to WTVF. Police helicopters hovering overhead joined in the surreal chase. Department policy prohibits Metro police from applying a PIT maneuver, a police tactic used to spin out a fleeing car, according to Fox 17. Instead, the Tennessee Highway Patrol was called in to execute the maneuver. Advertisement Police arrested Wray after a nearly four-hour chase. Texas Department of Transportation Video taken by Fox17 shows the trooper pitting Wray and officers putting her in handcuffs wearing a pair of pink shorts and a hot pink top. Wray is charged with two counts of vehicle theft, reckless endangerment and four counts felony evading arrest for Tuesday's super slow chase, according to reports. She was on probation for a November 2023 forgery conviction, and has an extensive criminal history including convictions for aggravated burglary, cocaine possession, criminal simulation and multiple theft convictions around Tennessee, according to reports.

FBI blocked probe into alleged 2020 election plot by China because it would ‘contradict Director Wray's testimony' to Congress, docs show

The FBI blocked an investigation into an alleged Chinese effort to meddle in the 2020 election to help former President Joe Biden because it would have made then-Director Christopher Wray look bad, documents released by the bureau show. The documents, provided to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) by the FBI and released on Tuesday, detailed the alleged election interference plot which was obtained by the bureau's Albany field office in August of 2020 from a credible confidential source and was subsequently 'suppressed' by FBI headquarters. The source relayed that the Chinese government had produced 'a large amount' of fraudulent US driver's licenses – using data collected from millions of TikTok accounts – that would allow 'tens of thousands of Chinese students and immigrants sympathetic to the Chinese Communist Party to vote for US Presidential Candidate Joe Biden, despite not being eligible to vote in the United States.' 4 The suppressed report detailed an alleged Chinese plot to cast fraudulently obtained mail-in ballots in support of Joe Biden. EPA Information about the alleged plot was circulated in a Sept. 25, 2020, FBI Intelligence Information Report (IIR) – one day after Wray testified to Congress that the bureau was unaware of any 'coordinated national voter fraud effort' – and recalled minutes after it was issued. 'Based on conversations with key individuals involved, it was conveyed that the recall of the IIR was abnormal,' FBI Assistant Director Marshall Yates wrote in a June 27 letter to Grassley. Yates noted that the IIR was recalled at the direction of FBI headquarters after it prompted 'significant attention' within the bureau – and even though it was 'coordinated and disseminated in textbook fashion.' The recall was purportedly issued so the Albany field office could 're-interview' the source, but even after the source was 'reengaged and provided additional context to support' the existence of an election interference plot, 'FBI Headquarters maintained its position not to republish the report,' Yates wrote. 'One reason cited for not releasing the IIR was because 'the reporting will contradict Director Wray's testimony,'' the assistant director informed Grassley. 4 Wray had testified to Congress a day before the Albany field office report was circulated, indicating he was unaware of any massive voter fraud threat ahead of the 2020 presidential election. EPA Albany field officer staffers were told that the recall was issued because the report was deemed by FBI headquarters to be 'not authoritative' – a characterization that was 'met with disagreement by those in the Albany office,' Yates noted. The assistant director further revealed that internal emails within the Albany field office showed staff 'had concerns that suppressing the IIR would be 'dangerous if we cite potential political implications as reasons for not putting out our information,' emphasizing that it was not the role of analysts to align intelligence with public testimony.' Staffers also expressed concern with FBI headquarters under Wray 'assuming the role of sole gatekeeper' for the intelligence community, since suppressing the report would prevent intelligence agencies from corroborating or discrediting the source's information. The Albany field office's report also resulted in a new policy being implemented ahead of the 2020 election, which stated that 'all raw reporting concerning the election will now require HQ coordination, which was not required,' Yates said. 4 Grassley said the documents released by the FBI 'smack of political decision-making.' AP 4 The FBI's China task force appears to have never looked into the alleged election interference plot, since the report was suppressed, according Grassley. REUTERS Grassley argued that the documents 'smack of political decision-making and prove the Wray-led FBI to be a deeply broken institution.' 'Ahead of a high-stakes election happening amid an unprecedented global pandemic, the FBI turned its back on its national security mission,' the senator said in a statement. 'One way or the other, intelligence must be fully investigated to determine whether it's true, or if it's just smoke and mirrors.' 'Chris Wray's FBI wasn't looking out for the American people – it was looking to save its own image.' In his sworn testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee on Sept. 24, 2020, Wray told lawmakers that the bureau has 'not seen historically any kind of coordinated national voter fraud effort in a major election, whether it is by mail or otherwise… [B]ut people should make no mistake we are vigilant as to the threat and watching it carefully, because we are in uncharted new territory.' Last week, the FBI confirmed that it 'found no information' that the bureau's Foreign Influence Task Force (FITF)-China division ever 'aggressively investigated' the alleged election interference plot, according to Grassley. Current FBI Director Kash Patel, who authorized the release of the documents to Grassley's office, has vowed to bring more transparency to the bureau since assuming the helm. 'Now's the time to rebuild the FBI's trust,' Grassley said in a statement. 'Director Patel's willingness to work with me to establish renewed transparency and accountability is a critical part of that process, and I applaud him for his efforts.'
