Samsung's Project Moohan XR headset could be similar to Vision Pro in more ways than one
Lanh Nguyen / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung will reportedly procure some displays for its upcoming Project Moohan headset from Sony. Sony also produced displays for the Apple Vision Pro. Samsung's display arm will also develop some of the headset's displays, in a bid to cut dependence on Sony. Samsung and Google are openly collaborating to create the first extended reality (XR) headset based on Android. The headset, codenamed Project Moohan, is expected to be unveiled some time in 2025, and Samsung has now taken a major step in its manufacturing. Korean outlet The Elec has revealed crucial bits about Samsung's upcoming XR headset, including plans to source some displays from Sony. Besides sourcing the initial batch of displays from Sony, Samsung Electronics also plans to commission its sister company, Samsung Display, for more displays. Per the report, Samsung will reportedly deploy tiny OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon), aka Micro Si OLED, displays for each eye. Compared to a traditional OLED, an OLEDoS offers increased sharpness by more tightly packing pixels along with a compact layout. Notably, Apple's Vision Pro also uses OLEDoS displays measuring 1.42 inches in size. With its XR headset, Samsung is reportedly using slightly smaller 1.3-inch displays per eye, but with a higher pixel density. By relying on two display manufacturers instead of one, Samsung may not only avert Sony's monopoly, but also gain the necessary expertise for supplying XR displays to other manufacturers in the future. Samsung has its ambitions in check In terms of demand, Samsung plans to ship only around 100,000 units of Project Moohan in 2025. The conservative approach dictates caution towards the new segment of products, especially with even Apple failing to truly appease fans with its $3,000 XR headset. Samsung's XR headset is not expected to be cheap in any regard, which may delay wider adoption. However, Samsung is not cutting back on its sense of luxury, as our editor C. Scott Brown witnessed at Google I/O 2025. Meanwhile, Samsung's experience with producing its own XR displays could help it refine other XR headsets in the pipeline, including devices codenamed 'Haean' and 'Jinju,' which, as per another report by ET News, could launch sometime next year. These might also be relatively cheaper than Project Moohan. Based on other rumors, the Galaxy XR headset is likely to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and have 16GB of RAM. HTC Partners with NTT Com to Forge a New Model for Immersive Entertainment in Japan
TOKYO & TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HTC Corporation, a global leader in innovative smartphone and virtual reality platforms, today announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the leading Japanese ICT solutions provider for telecommunications and smart venue infrastructure. The two companies will join forces to promote the development and application of large-scale immersive location-based entertainment (LBE) across Japan, paving the way for a new era of immersive experiences. LBE is a rapidly growing type of immersive entertainment that brings extended reality (XR) headsets into physical spaces, allowing guests to enjoy virtual experiences together. LBE can deliver a range of experiences across culture, entertainment, education, and tourism. For LBE venue operators, HTC's lightweight deployment solutions allow for quick setup without major renovations, which enables flexible planning and improved venue utilization and value. As Japan continues to invest in large-scale sports and concert venues, operators face the challenge of maximizing venue usage in off-peak periods. Reducing operational costs while increasing usage is crucial to the health of these businesses. With HTC's globally leading LBE technology and NTT Com's expertise in smart venue infrastructure and networking, the partnership will develop innovative LBE immersive experiences and help revitalize venue operations. As a pioneer in XR, HTC has successfully launched immersive cultural exhibitions in multiple countries, showcasing the versatility of LBE in large spaces. Notable examples include "Eternal Notre-Dame," recreating the historical splendor of Notre-Dame Cathedral; "Versailles: The Lost Garden of the Sun King," transporting visitors into the grandeur of French royal gardens; and "La Magie Opéra," an operatic XR journey at the Paris Opera. These experiences have received acclaim from international media and audiences alike, highlighting the potential of XR to transcend cultural and technological boundaries. HTC's LBE solution supports multi-user synchronous immersive experiences, allowing free exploration of virtual spaces as large as 1,000 square meters (approximately 33 x 30 meters). These experiences can be adapted for different uses, including cultural exhibitions, performing arts, military and police training, educational outreach, and immersive tourism, offering high scalability and commercial flexibility. Looking ahead, HTC and NTT Com plan to deepen their collaboration by working with popular Japanese IP holders in anime and gaming, cultural institutions, and local governments to expand the scope and depth of immersive content offerings. In addition, NTT Com will explore integrating its advanced technology platforms—such as IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network), IoT applications, and tactile transmission systems—to build a next-generation entertainment model. This will enable real-time multi-site connectivity and highly interactive immersive experiences, driving Japan's LBE ecosystem toward a more interconnected, intelligent future. Samsung is taking a more realistic approach to VR than Apple did
Samsung will most likely unveil its upcoming XR ( Extended Reality ) headset — named Project Moohan — on September 29 this year. Unlike Apple's approach for the Apple Vision Pro last year, however, Samsung is reportedly taking a much more realistic approach with its foray back into XR. According to a recent report ( translated source ), Samsung is only considering 100,000 units for the headset's initial launch. To put that into perspective, even the upcoming Galaxy G Fold — Samsung's tri-foldable phone — will have at least 200,000 units made for its own limited release. This is obviously due to the fact that the XR industry still remains a niche market. Furthermore, according to all of the news that has come in about the hardware powering it, Project Moohan will likely be quite expensive. It might not be as expensive as the Vision Pro, which was $3,499 at launch, but it won't be as affordable as the Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S either. Project Moohan seen at Galaxy Unpacked. | Image credit — PhoneArena Apple was convinced that the Vision Pro would sell out everywhere. Initially, the company thought that they would have sold a million units by the end of 2024. Now, in the middle of 2025, rough estimates point to around half a million headsets having been sold. Enterprise interest in the Vision Pro, something that Apple was heavily banking on, also dwindled soon after release. Samsung has already lowered sales expectations for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 due to the foldable industry's current state. The company has been smart enough to apply that same logic to Project Moohan. Despite that, and that fact that Project Moohan will only come out in Korea at first, I think that Samsung's headset has a lot of potential. If the company is able to provide an experience comparable to the Vision Pro at a lower cost, I can see the headset selling a lot better than its rival. And, obviously, it should come with support for VR games. That was a mistake that Apple made with its headset. Naturally, as it becomes cheaper to manufacture, we'll see more affordable successors pop up in the coming years. But whether it will be able to compete against the smart AR glasses that Meta and Apple are working on remains to be seen. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
