Can the Eagles defense still fly high?

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and NFL writer Charles McDonald discuss Philadelphia's approach with an up-and-coming young defense that lost a couple of key pieces following last season's Super Bowl run. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Philadelphia Eagles, Charles, why do you have him as your number one defense? Other than that, they were the number one defense last year and they won the Super Bowl. And they, I mean, it's a pretty easy argument to make as well. It's easy to make, but it's also not quite the same defense, you know, they've lost some guys on the defensive line. They've lost Milton Williams, who signed that massive deal with New England. Josh Sweat is in Arizona, but you look at their defense, right? And it's just littered with first and second round picks all over the place, right? The defensive line still is, you know, all the Georgia guys, they've really started to develop. Jordan Davis, I think we'll see what happens this year. He's gotten into incredible shape. Contract year, Jordan Davis could be special. We'll see. Jaylen Carter, we know about that. But Nolan Smith, like when I was skimming through some of my stuff, he has really improved from where he was when he first got into the NFL. Like he was all over the place in the Super Bowl. You get to bring back Zach Vaughan. Like we're talking about a 7-2 Scott Bonner, who was an absolute assassin last year. And sometimes you get these years from linebackers where like, oh, they put up a lot of numbers, but it's pretty manufactured. No, he actually played really, really good football last year. And then we got Quinnen Mitchell on the outside, who's an absolute stud. Cooper DeJean, who's an absolute stud. But they have so many guys on this defense still. I still think they're going to be the best defense in the league because a lot of those guys are so young. Like a lot of these guys are still in their rookie deals or first or second year players. These guys are going to get better. So I'm really excited to see what the next step of all those guys they've drafted in the last two years looks like in year three, because there's hard proof of concept that these are potentially Pro Bowl talented NFL players and they're so young. I just want to see what's next for them. Close

Do the Broncos now have the NFL's best defense?

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and NFL writer Charles McDonald discuss how Denver's stacked secondary may mean the Mile High City is home to football's top defense. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Let's go with your number two team, the Broncos, who were my number one team and Matt Harmon's number one team. I'll let you take the lead. You start looking at the CV room, OK, wow, if those guys play up to the ability that we know they have, that's insane. You get Hofanga, the old 49ers safety on the back end. That's crazy. I'm pumping the brakes a little bit on this Dre Greenlaw stuff. I just, I don't know how anyone can be confident on on what that's going to be. We'll see on that front, but even if he's not that good, this is still one of the elite defenses in the league. They're going to beat up the bad run games. They're going to give him hell. I don't I think they still have some things to prove as far as, you know, you go to Baltimore and you get demolished, and you go to Buffalo in the playoffs and you you get run right off the field again. So you got to improve there, but they just check off so many boxes that it's hard to have much lower than this. I ended with them at number one because it's just momentum from May and just getting excited about what they did and just, yeah, pass rush, pressures, like they can win with four. They can win with blitzes. They do funky stuff that makes it hard on battle lines and young quarterbacks or bad quarterbacks. They have the dude at corner in Pat Surtain, reigning Defensive Player of the Year, who can lock down anybody. Hank is a headhunter. He's a little risk-reward type of safety, but man, he can make some plays. I really like him. I think what you just mentioned about run games that can kind of steamroll people, that's theirthat's the Vance Joseph scheme weakness, I would say, because it's the same discussion we've had with the Cardinals too. It's so funky and so much movement on the front end that if it gets blocked up, it's a gash. And that's the risk-reward of their defensive style. Do they kind of tone it down? We'll see, but it's kind of dance with the one who brought you, kind of thing. That's why I always kind of, you know, I don't know how to decide on those things. But yeah, they have a lot of answers for a lot of different teams on top of speed, versatility, and all the good stuff. Close

Katie Ledecky wins 1500m free at swim worlds on 15-year streak, breaks ties with Phelps, Lochte

Katie Ledecky extended her 15-year win streak in the 1500m freestyle and broke career medal ties with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte at the World Swimming Championships on Tuesday. Ledecky earned her sixth title in the 1500m free and 22nd world title overall. She clocked 15 minutes, 26.44 seconds in Singapore, comfortably prevailing by 5.35 seconds over Italian Simona Quadarella. 'Each one has meaning, and I love every race that I've had at worlds over the years,' Ledecky said on Peacock. SWIMMING WORLDS: Results | Broadcast Schedule It was actually Ledecky's closest 1500m free at an Olympics or worlds since her first title in 2013. Credit Quadarella, who became the second-fastest woman in history in the event by 7.09 seconds over Dane Lotte Friis' silver medal time from 2013. Ledecky entered the race with the top 24 times in history. She swam the fifth-best time ever Tuesday but leaves with the top 11 times with Quadarella now slotting at No. 12. Ledecky last lost a 1500m free at the 2010 Potomac Valley Championships in her native Maryland — as a 13-year-old to a 17-year-old Kaitlin Pawlowicz. '(Ledecky) was leading and her cap came off,' Pawlowicz said in 2016, according to Yahoo Sports. Ledecky earned her 28th world medal of any color, breaking her tie with Ryan Lochte for second all-time behind Michael Phelps' 33. She won a 21st individual medal, breaking her tie with Phelps for second all-time behind Swede Sarah Sjostrom's 23. Ledecky has two events left at these worlds: the 4x200m free relay on Thursday and the 800m free, the most anticipated race of the meet due to a likely showdown with Canadian Summer McIntosh. That final is Saturday. Also Tuesday, Australian Kaylee McKeown swam the second-fastest women's 100m backstroke in history — 57.16 seconds — to overtake American Regan Smith. Fellow American Katharine Berkoff took bronze in a repeat of the Paris Olympic podium. Smith, the world record holder at 57.13, and McKeown combine to own the top 25 times in history. Romanian David Popovici rallied past American Luke Hobson in the last 50 meters to win the 200m free in 1:43.53. Hobson took silver in 1:43.84, one year after earning bronze behind gold medalist Popovici at the Olympics. Olympic 200m breaststroke gold medalist Kate Douglass gave the U.S. a third silver of the session. She finished runner-up to German Anna Elendt in the 100m breast. Pieter Coetze of South Africa rallied from third at the 50 to take the men's 100m back in 51.85. Coetze matched the third-best time in history in relegating Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon of Italy to silver. Worlds continue all week with preliminary heats at 10 p.m. ET and finals at 7 a.m., live on Peacock. Wednesday's finals feature Olympic champion Bobby Finke in the men's 800m freestyle. Nick Zaccardi, David Popovici of Romania touched the wall just 0.31 seconds ahead of U.S. swimmer Luke Hobson to secure the gold medal in the men's 200m freestyle at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Tadej Pogačar wins his fourth Tour de France in dominant fashion

The four-timers club: Pogačar is one of just six men to win the Tour de France at least four times, and he's still only 26 years old. One more yellow jersey will tie him atop the leaderboard. 🇫🇷 Jacques Anquetil: 5 (1957, 1961-64) 🇧🇪 Eddy Merckx: 5 (1969-72, 1974) 🇫🇷 Bernard Hinault: 5 (1978-79, 1981-82, 1985) 🇪🇸 Miguel Induráin: 5 (1991-95) 🇬🇧 Chris Froome: 4 (2013, 2015-17) 🇸🇮 Pogačar: 4 (2020-21, 2024-25) Wild stat: Pogačar also finished second in 2022 and 2023, making him the only rider ever to finish on the Tour de France podium six years in a row. (That, of course, does not include Lance Armstrong, whose seven straight victories were stripped for doping.) One-sided rivalry: Vingegaard, a two-time champion himself (2022-23), could have been cycling's dominant force in any other era. Instead, he finished as the runner-up to his Slovenian rival yet again, just as he did last year and in his 2021 debut. Go deeper: Tadej Pogačar and the boredom of perfection (Patrick Redford, Defector) ⚾️ The Big Amish's historic night A's rookie Nick Kurtz authored perhaps the single greatest offensive performance in MLB history on Friday as he continued a red-hot start to his big league career. By the numbers: The 22-year-old lefty went 6-for-6 against the Astros with 4 HR, a double and 8 RBIs, notching MLB's 20th four-HR game (and first by a rookie) while matching the single-game record of 19 total bases. His double, by the way, came about a foot shy of going over the fence, too. Kurtz also scored six runs, which is somehow an even rarer feat than hitting four homers. This was just the ninth six-run game in MLB history. Add it all up and he's the first player ever — over an entire career — to have a game with 4+ HR, a game with 5+ XBH, a game with 6+ hits, a game with 6+ runs and a game with 8+ RBIs. And he did it all in one night, at age 22, in his 66th game. What they're saying: "It's arguably the best game I've ever watched from a single player," Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said of "The Big Amish," an appropriate nickname for the 6-foot-5 slugger from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "This kid continues to have jaw-dropping moments." Zoom out: As unbelievable as Friday's feat was, it hardly came out of nowhere. Kurtz was the No. 4 pick in last year's draft, raced through the minor leagues and is now off to one of the best starts in MLB history. His 23 HR are tied for the most among 1B despite playing just 67 games, and his 1.061 OPS since debuting on April 23 trails only Aaron Judge (1.138) during that time. A July for the ages: Kurtz's 1.052 slugging percentage this month trails only Barry Bonds in April 2004 (1.132) for the highest ever in a calendar month (min. 75 PA). ROY favorite: Kurtz's scorching run has made him a massive betting favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year (-1600 at BetMGM), surging past teammate Jacob Wilson (+700). ⚽️ The Lionesses are back on top England held off Spain in a shootout on Sunday to capture their second straight Women's Euro title, while also getting revenge for their loss in the 2023 World Cup final. ICYMI: Spain took an early 1-0 lead on a header from Mariona Caldentey, but England returned the favor in the 57th minute with an equalizer off the head of Alessia Russo. Neither side found the net again, and the Lionesses ultimately prevailed, 3-1, in penalties. England's grit on Sunday mirrored how they responded to adversity all month long, starting back in early July when they became the first defending Women's Euro champion to lose their opener before dominating the rest of the group stage. In the quarterfinals, they trailed Sweden, 2-0, before scoring twice in the closing minutes and winning in penalties. And in the semis, they trailed Italy, 1-0, before tying it up late in stoppage time and winning on the latest goal ever scored in the tournament (119th minute). Are you not entertained? Sunday's finale capped a knockout round full of thrillers. The largest margin of victory across seven matches was 2-0. The other six games: three shootouts, two extra-time wins and a 2-1 victory in the 90th minute. 📸 The world in photos 🇺🇸 Cooperstown, New York — Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner, Dick Allen and Dave Parker were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, the latter two posthumously, increasing the membership to 351. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Troon, Scotland — Lottie Woad, 21, notched a three-shot victory at the Women's Scottish Open, joining Rose Zhang (2023) and Beverly Hanson (1951) as the only LPGA golfers to win in their pro debut. 🇸🇬 Singapore — Canada's Summer McIntosh is aiming to match Michael Phelps' record of five individual golds at the swimming world championships, and her first one came Sunday in the 400-meter freestyle. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Blackpool, England — Luke Littler, 18, took the World Matchplay crown on Sunday to become the fifth player to complete darts' Triple Crown (Matchplay, Premier League and World Championship). ⚾️ MLB trivia Mike Trout reached 1,000 career RBIs on Sunday, becoming the ninth active player to reach the milestone. Question: How many of the other eight can you name? Hint: Five NL, three AL. Answer at the bottom. 🏀 Coming tomorrow The 2025-26 Clippers are on track to be the oldest team in NBA history. Could this work out in LA's favor? Or are they already toast? We'll dive in tomorrow. Trivia answer: Freddie Freeman (1,284); Paul Goldschmidt (1,224); Nolan Arenado (1,175); Andrew McCutchen (1,127); Carlos Santana (1,126); Giancarlo Stanton (1,123); Manny Machado (1,115); Bryce Harper (1,019) We hope you enjoyed this edition of Yahoo Sports AM, our daily newsletter that keeps you up to date on all things sports.
