Boring, but essential: Get these things sorted before you turn 60

Real Money, a free weekly newsletter giving expert tips on how to save, invest and make the most of your money, is sent every Sunday. You're reading an excerpt − sign up to get the whole newsletter in your inbox. There are many things in the personal finance realm that fall into the 'boring, but essential' bucket. For example, every time I prattle on about superannuation, or sitting down to do your tax return – hint, hint. They're all things we have to do, but not things we want to do (though joke's on you, I love prattling about superannuation). A prime example of this is estate planning, which has the double whammy of requiring you to both a) think about your impending death, and b) do a lot of dull paperwork. But it's absolutely essential to get your will sorted out, so much so that many experts recommend you write one as soon as you turn 18. Obviously, the vast majority of us don't actually do that because we're too busy partying and being cool, and indeed, if I unexpectedly passed away right now there'd be no documentation on how to distribute my collection of rare Yu-Gi-Oh cards, so that's a pity. Loading What's the problem? Realistically, a lot of us leave it until later in life to think about drawing up a will, usually when we have significant enough assets and dependants to pass those assets on to. This means you might be in your 50s or 60s by the time you actually get around to it; 93 per cent of people in their 70s have a will. We also leave it that late to do myriad other important things that can make a huge difference to our (and our loved ones') quality of life. And I get it, things can get away from you, and, again, no one likes sitting down and doing boring stuff. But once retirement starts to peer around the corner, there are some things you really should get onto. What you can do about it

Prolific Pokémon Voice Actor, James Carter Cathcart Died at 71

A prolific Pokémon animated series voice actor responsible for many iconic characters, James Carter Cathcart, died at 71 this week. The news was announced by the late voice actor's wife, Martha Jacobi. She took to Facebook this week to announce James Carter Cathcart's passing at 71, and she writes 'For those of you who don't know me, I am James Carter Cathcart's wife. JCC died, peacefully, very early in the morning, on Tuesday, 7/8/25, at Calvary Hospital, in the Bronx,' adding 'Thanks to all of Jimmy's fans over the years! Giving you joy was why he worked so hard on his craft. Please know how much he appreciated you!' in the heartfelt post. For over 25 years, James Carter Cathcart was the voice of many childhoods, lending his talents to a slew of animated projects, including voicing many of the instantly recognizable characters in Pokémon. He was the voice behind Ash's rival, Gary Oak, Professor Oak, Team Rocket's James and Meowth, and he even filled in to voice smaller roles like Snubbull in the earlier film, Pokémon: Pikachu's Vacation. Aside from Pokémon, Cathcart was responsible for lending his talents to more dastardly roles, even voicing Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh during that iconic scene where the character discards the five pieces of Exodia over a boat railing. James Carter Cathcart also donned the voice role of Sonic the Hedgehog character, Vector the Crocodile, on the weekend morning cartoon Sonic X in the early 2000's. James Carter Cathcart is survived by Ms. Jacobi; his daughters Nicole Zoppi, 41, and Mackenzie, 30; and his son, Carter, 31. In her announcement post, Martha Jacobi also details funeral arrangements for the late voice actor saying 'The funeral will be in early August, In New York. Memorial designations are still in process, pending conversations with one of the charities that was close to Jimmy's heart. I will post those here when they are in place.' Thousands to attend sold-out Scotland Card Show in Glasgow

Over the past three years, the Scotland Card Show has grown from 300 people in a hall to over 8,000 expected to attend this year's show at the SEC. This year's event will take place in two halls in the arena from June 28 to 29. The show is the brainchild of 27-year-old Jordan Gorman, who set up the event as a lifelong collector of trading cards. Jordan, from Poolewe in Wester Ross, said: "I grew up collecting Pokémon cards and Yu-Gi-Oh cards with my brothers, and over lockdown, I reignited that kind of love for collecting. "After lockdown, I carried on with the hobby and just kind of looked to do a little community meet up with other people around Scotland who also collected. "So, we hired a small hall in Glasgow with the money I had as a school teacher in Edinburgh. "And then 300 people turned up to this small hall with a queue going down the road. "Now it's gone from a little community meetup to a full convention now in Glasgow." Fans will be hoping to find rare cards at the show (Image: Ross Wardrop) READ MORE: HUGE new mural being painted in Glasgow city centre by well-known artist Jorda had never hosted an event before he organised the first show. He said, "I have no experience in event management or event organising. "It was genuinely just booking a hall and putting it on Instagram, hoping people would turn up. "And now it's just turned, and I've kind of learned as I go, and now, after 3 years, I'm still learning as I go. "I'm actually really lucky that the event is now growing so much that I bit the bullet and quit my job at Edinburgh Council in September 2024 to focus on it full time." That gamble has paid off as he's already looking at the show getting bigger again next year. Jordan explained: "We did it last year for one day, and that was just in one hall and then again that sold out. "So then we were like, 'Right, we're going two days and adding that little extra hall beside it.' And now that's sold out. "So now we're adding even another hall next year to have more than like 10,000 people next year. So that's all booked and ready to go." Fans of all ages will be coming to the show (Image: Ross Wardrop) READ MORE: 'Phenomenal': Glasgow flower shop named best in Scotland at top awards Jordan's also managed to secure a roster of seriously impressive special guests, including ex-Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon. He added: "He's actually really enthusiastic about it, and I think he's really excited to meet fans and sign stuff for everyone all day. "So, we hope this is just the start of many footballers joining the card show." Jordan also revealed that ex-Motherwell footballer Tony Watt will be there, as will a host of YouTube and voice-acting stars. There'll be plenty of high-value cards as well as high-profile stars there, with one collector even contacting Jordan to arrange security for cards worth a small fortune. He explained: "People are now making it their business as well because these trading cards can be worth so much. "You're talking like, you know, hundreds of thousands, some of these go for. "And at the card show, you're going to see just how valuable some of these cards are that you probably had as a kid, and sadly ended up in washing machines." They had the league trophy at the event last year (Image: Ross Wardrop) READ MORE: 'Local legend' road sweeper retires after 43 years working for council The card market has seen a massive boost from social media in recent years, and tales of cards making people life-changingly rich will have many hoping to find an extra rare card. However, Jordan's own collection is more personal, and he doesn't have much competition for it. He said: "I'm a Ross County fan. So I've been collecting Ross County cards, and luckily, there's not much demand for that. So I can get them all, and I'm the only buyer for them. "I also collect Pokémon base sets. So that's just kind of what we collected when we were younger. And my favourite Pokémon is Raichu. So that's who I've been going for." Jordan also recently scooped some awards for his work with the show, winning Rising Star at the Scottish Event Awards and then winning another at the UK Startup Awards. The show is sold out, but you can find out more about it here.

Massive Nintendo Switch game sale live from $7 — 17 deals I'd shop from Nintendo, Amazon and more

Waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2's release has been tough. But you can always distract yourself by shopping these deals on some of the best Nintendo Switch games, and fill out your library with awesome titles for less! Nintendo is offering some massive discounts on Switch games right now. For example, you can grab Immortals Fenyx Rising on sale for $7. This is an awesome game that plays similarly to the super popular Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, so it's a must play if that game left you hungry for more. Over at Amazon you can score Nintendo Switch games on sale from $19. Or you can grab deals like Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom on sale for $44 at Woot. My favorite Nintendo Switch game deals are listed below. Plus, check out our Memorial Day sales coverage. Get in the groove to a collection of 40 songs in Samba De Amigo Party Central. You need to shake your Joy-Con controllers to the beat to get the best score, whether you're playing alone, with a friend or with up to 20 players online. You can even customize your character with unlockable costumes and accessories. The sequel to 2017's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Sparks of Hope once again reunites the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom with the zany Rabbids. This time the unexpected allies are venturing into the stars for an intergalactic adventure. Offering colorful strategy combat, and plenty of planets to explore, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is one of the most overlooked games on Nintendo Switch. A full remake of the original Super Mario RPG released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), this role-playing game sees Mario, Bowser, Peach and some new friends embark on an adventure to repair a wish-granting star. With updated graphics, gameplay and new cinematics, Super Mario RPG has never looked (or played) this well, but the original game's charms have been carefully retained as well. Persona 5 Royal is part turn-based RPG and part high-school simulator. You play as a new student who has recently moved to Tokyo. Soon you discover the ability to transverse a strange alternate reality and form The Phantom Thieves in an effort to fix the corrupt society around you. Just be warned, Persona 5 Royal will consume all your free time once it gets its hooks in. Take up arms against the forces of evil in Blizzard's action-packed loot-collecting slasher. You and up to three friends can slay your way through both the core game and Reaper of Souls collection as one of 7 different fantasy classes. If you have fond memories of the classic Yu-Gi-Oh video games, you'll definitely want to pick up this Nintendo Switch game. It features an extensive collection of 14 remade Yu-Gi-Oh games, which is an awesome nostalgia trip for fans. This pack even includes an exclusive Harpie's Feather Duster trading card to add to your deck. Another classic RPG collection makes a welcome addition to your Nintendo Switch library. With improved visuals, music and art, Suikoden has never looked or played better. If you're getting through Mario games faster than Nintendo can make them, then this is the game for you. Build your own levels in the style of several different 2D Mario games, share them online and then test out others. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the highly-anticipated sequel to Breath of the Wild, and it doesn't disappoint. Step back into the world of Hyrule, and embark on Link's most perilous quest to date. You'll need to master new abilities such as Ultrahand and Fuse in order to unravel the mystery of what happened to Princess Zelda and defeat the sinister Ganondorf. This side-scrolling adventure is a wonderfully refreshing spin on the classic Mario formula. Venturing to the Flower Kingdom, you'll discover stage-altering Wonder Flowers which can warp levels, create new platforming challenges and even turn Mario into an elephant. Playable in up to four-player co-op, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a platforming marvel for the entire family and one of the very best Nintendo Switch games you can play now. If you can't get enough of farming sims, Fae Farm should be the next game on your list. Featuring super-cute visuals and solid farming gameplay, this is a great title for those who want to relax. You can also decorate, tend to animals and hunt for rare items in the mines.
