Jaishankar blames Emergency-era deal for fishermen's arrests by Sri Lanka
At BJP Yuva Morcha event, S Jaishankar said that Indian fishermen continue to suffer due to a 1970s Emergency-era pact with Sri Lanka that was passed without parliamentary debate or consensus Rimjhim Singh New Delhi External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said Indian fishermen continue to be arrested by Sri Lankan authorities because of an agreement signed during the Emergency period, which stripped them of fishing rights in certain sea areas, news agency PTI reported. Speaking at an event organised by the BJP Yuva Morcha to mark 50 years of the Emergency, Jaishankar said the agreement would not have happened if Parliament had been working properly back then. 'No debate, no consensus' 'Big decisions were sometimes taken without any parliamentary debate during the time,' he said, highlighting the lack of democratic processes under the Emergency. Referring to the ongoing issue of fishermen being detained by Sri Lankan Navy, Jaishankar said, 'We hear about our fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka. The reason is that an agreement was entered into during the Emergency under which the rights of the fishermen for fishing in some sea waters of Sri Lanka was abandoned.' He said, if the Parliament had functioned genuinely, the matter would have been debated and such a decision would not have been accepted. 'The consequences of this decision are still visible in Tamil Nadu,' he said. India's image suffered, says Jaishankar Reflecting on the broader implications of the Emergency, Jaishankar said the world's perception of India as a vibrant democracy took a hit. 'I heard from my seniors in the foreign service how difficult it was to defend India after the murder of the Constitution and democracy by the imposition of Emergency,' he said. He also shared personal memories from that period, mentioning police raids at Jawaharlal Nehru University hostels and his family's connection with anti-Emergency leaders such as George Fernandes. Criticism of dynastic politics In a veiled attack on the Congress leadership, Jaishankar said the roots of the Emergency lay in prioritising familial power over national interest. 'An Emergency situation arises when the 'family' is kept ahead of the country,' he said. 'Some people keep the copy of the Constitution in their pockets but have other feelings in their hearts,' he added, in an apparent reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The minister stressed on the need for an informed and empowered citizenry to prevent any repeat of such an authoritarian phase. 'An empowered public would never let it happen,' he said. (Full video available on PTI Videos -… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) June 27, 2025 June 25: Samvidhan Hatya Divas Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Thursday that the Union Cabinet has decided to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' (Constitution Killing Day). The decision marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency and aims to remind the nation of the excesses committed during that period. He also criticised the Congress party, accusing it of hypocrisy. 'Those who 'murdered' the Constitution are flaunting a copy of it,' he said, taking a dig at the opposition. Recalling the imposition of the Emergency on the night of June 25, 1975, the minister said that during that period, opposition leaders were jailed, media was silenced, and civil liberties were severely restricted.

"Emergency era a black chapter in Indian democracy": Tripura CM Manik Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 26 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said on Wednesday that the emergency was an unbearable situation all over India and that everyone needs to be aware of it. Chief Minister Saha said that such dark days should never return in the future, and everyone needs to learn from Prime Minister Narendra Modi about protecting democracy and respecting the Constitution. The Chief Minister said this at a program titled Mock Parliament, which the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha organised at Sukanta Academy in Agartala. At the program, CM Saha said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is encouraging the inclusion of youth in the Bharatiya Janata Party, especially those whose families have never been involved in politics. 'This will bring talented youth who can contribute to the country and the state. At that time, there was a turbulent political atmosphere during the 35 years of the CPM and the Congress-alliance era. But stability returned after our Bharatiya Janata Party government was established in Tripura. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat for about 13 years. After taking charge as Prime Minister in 2014, he showed how to run the country. Following him, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government is now running in about 20 states. Keeping in mind the Prime Minister's instructions and the thoughts of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Pandit Deen Dayal, we are also trying to move forward,' said Dr. Saha. The Chief Minister said that young men and women are now joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in large numbers. 'They need to be informed about history. They need to get a proper understanding of democracy. The current generation is unaware of the Emergency period, so they need to know about this history. Today, mock parliaments are being held in different places across the country. I hope that by joining such events, they will be able to learn about the concept of parliamentary politics in the coming days,' he said. CM Saha also said that there will always be a long black chapter of about 21 months in India's history--from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977--and now people often see Congress and Communists taking to the streets, saying there is no democracy. 'We need to learn from our famous Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, how to protect democracy and respect the Constitution. On this day in 1975, Emergency was declared without regard to the Constitution. Starting from our leader Lal Krishna Advani to Jayaprakash Narayan, RSS and Jana Sangh leaders were arrested and taken to jail at that time. What an unbearable situation the whole country was in. So everyone should know about these events. May such a dark day never come again,' he added. The event was attended by Bharatiya Janata Party State President and MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Yuva Morcha State President Sushanta Dev, Yuva Morcha Vice President Vicky Prasad, General Secretary and MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma, Bharatiya Janata Party State Vice President Tapas Bhattacharya, and other top leaders as distinguished guests. Minister Sivankutty's visit to Kozhikode marred by black flag protests
KOZHIKODE: Tension flared up in Kozhikode on Saturday during the visit of General Education Minister V Sivankutty as the Yuva Morcha - BJP workers protested over the Bharat Mata row. Yuva Morcha workers who staged a black flag protest against the minister were stopped by SFI workers which resulted in a clash. On Saturday, when the minister arrived at Jubilee Hall in Tali to attend a programme related to the SFI national conference, Yuva Morcha workers waved black flags at the minister. The protesters were stopped by SFI workers leading to a clash between both outfits. Following this, the police intervened and took the workers into custody. Soon after, when Fraternity workers also came to protest there in connection with the Plus-I seat crisis in the Malabar region, SFI workers stopped them too and a clash broke out again. Police intervened in this too and took members of both groups into custody. Protesting the incident of SFI workers attacking Yuva Morcha workers, BJP members burnt the minister in effigy. BJP leaders alleged that police were helping SFI members to attack Yuva Morcha workers. 'Our workers were beaten up by CPM workers and the police. If the police do not arrest the criminals, we will retaliate,' said BJP Kozhikode district president K P Prakash Babu. Meanwhile, Sivankutty said, 'Scouts and Guides is a secular, non-political association. Secularism is important in the approach to students.' Recently he had walked out of Raj Bhavan during an official function in protest against the display of an image of Bharat Mata. 'When I reached Raj Bhavan, I was welcomed by a portrait of a woman holding a saffron flag. I left because I am loyal to the Constitution', said Sivankutty. He also claimed the ABVP's black flag protest was staged on orders from RSS-ruling Raj Bhavan. Earlier in the day, when the minister was leaving Kozhikode Guest House to attend the SFI programme, a black flag protest was held under the leadership of the KSU district committee, led by district president V T Suraj, over the Plus-I seat issue. KSU workers jumped in front of the minister's vehicle, but police arrested them and shifted them. SFI national president and CPM state committee member V P Sanu said, 'The minister was attending a private event, not an official function. Yuva Morcha doesn't know what democracy is.'

Clash erupts during ABVP-Yuva Morcha protest against Minister Sivankutty
A protest taken out by activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Yuva Morcha against General Education Minister V. Sivankutty over the 'Bharat Mata' issue led to a clash between the police and the activists at Tali in Kozhikode on Saturday (June 21). The involvement of activists from the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) escalated the situation. The police brought the situation under control by arresting the ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists. Minister V. Sivankutty was in Tali to inaugurate a seminar in connection with the National Conference of the SFI at the MAM Jubilee Hall at Kandamkulam, as well as a departmental event at the Zamorin's Higher Secondary School nearby. ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists attempted to block his convoy near the Tali Mahadeva Temple by raising black flags. The police intervened to control the protest and clear the way for the minister. Meanwhile, SFI and DYFI activists allegedly attacked the ABVP and Yuva Morcha members even while they were in police custody. Meanwhile, P. Reghunath, president of the BJP (North Zone), Kozhikode, alleged that the police attacked the ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists without provocation as they were leaving the BJP District Committee office, located just a few metres from the Jubilee Hall. He claimed the activists were heading towards Kidson Corner, where the party had already planned a protest on the 'Bharat Mata' issue. He further alleged that the police had created an opportunity for the SFI-DYFI activists to attack the ABVP-Yuva Morcha activists. He demanded that the police take action against the SFI activists who were reportedly involved in the attack. Later, activists of the Fraternity Movement took out a protest against the Minister, demanding more Plus Two seats, which led to a minor scuffle between them and SFI activists. Earlier, speaking to the media at the Government Guest House, Mr. Sivankutty alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had instigated ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists to obstruct him at every turn. He also claimed that activists had destroyed the National Flag displayed on his car during a protest in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Sivankutty's remarks about the use of a portrait of 'Bharat Mata' at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram during an official programme had earlier triggered the controversy.
