Clash erupts during ABVP-Yuva Morcha protest against Minister Sivankutty
A protest taken out by activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Yuva Morcha against General Education Minister V. Sivankutty over the 'Bharat Mata' issue led to a clash between the police and the activists at Tali in Kozhikode on Saturday (June 21). The involvement of activists from the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) escalated the situation. The police brought the situation under control by arresting the ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists.
Minister V. Sivankutty was in Tali to inaugurate a seminar in connection with the National Conference of the SFI at the MAM Jubilee Hall at Kandamkulam, as well as a departmental event at the Zamorin's Higher Secondary School nearby. ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists attempted to block his convoy near the Tali Mahadeva Temple by raising black flags. The police intervened to control the protest and clear the way for the minister. Meanwhile, SFI and DYFI activists allegedly attacked the ABVP and Yuva Morcha members even while they were in police custody.
Meanwhile, P. Reghunath, president of the BJP (North Zone), Kozhikode, alleged that the police attacked the ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists without provocation as they were leaving the BJP District Committee office, located just a few metres from the Jubilee Hall. He claimed the activists were heading towards Kidson Corner, where the party had already planned a protest on the 'Bharat Mata' issue. He further alleged that the police had created an opportunity for the SFI-DYFI activists to attack the ABVP-Yuva Morcha activists. He demanded that the police take action against the SFI activists who were reportedly involved in the attack.
Later, activists of the Fraternity Movement took out a protest against the Minister, demanding more Plus Two seats, which led to a minor scuffle between them and SFI activists.
Earlier, speaking to the media at the Government Guest House, Mr. Sivankutty alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had instigated ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists to obstruct him at every turn. He also claimed that activists had destroyed the National Flag displayed on his car during a protest in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Sivankutty's remarks about the use of a portrait of 'Bharat Mata' at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram during an official programme had earlier triggered the controversy.

Adarsh M Saji elected SFI All India president, Srijan Bhattacharya general secretary
KOZHIKODE: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has elected Adarsh M Saji as its new all India president and Srijan Bhattacharya as the general secretary at the 18th All India Conference, held at Sitaram Yechury and Nepaldev Bhattacharya Manch in Palestine Solidarity Nagar (Aspin Courtyard), Kozhikode on Sunday. Both leaders were previously serving as all India joint secretaries in the outgoing central committee and bring years of organisational experience and student leadership to their new roles. Adarsh M Saji hails from Chathannur in Kollam. He is currently a final-year LLB student at Janhit Law College and serves as a member of the CPM Kollam District Committee. Prior to this elevation, he held the positions of SFI state vice-president and all India joint secretary. Srijan Bhattacharya, the newly elected general secretary, is a native of Jadavpur in West Bengal. A postgraduate in history, he is also a member of the CPM West Bengal state Committee and previously served as the SFI West Bengal State Secretary. He contested in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as the CPM candidate from the Jadavpur constituency.

Don't dictate terms: Min on Zumba row

If anyone has any issues, they should discuss them with the govt. He stated that he would not accept any threat or warning from anyone regarding the Zumba row. "There is an elected govt to decide on academic and non-academic matters in govt schools," Sivankutty told reporters in the capital. The govt is ready to have a discussion on the steps taken, but on issues commonly known to all, the govt won't allow anyone to dictate terms that go against the secular nature of the country, he added. The comments and behaviour on Zumba actually ridiculed lakhs of students and teachers who take part in the dance. "There is controversy on school uniforms, on dress code, and that boys and girls are dancing together. There are associations to decide the dress code of sportspersons; school uniforms are decided by the PTA," he said. "There were requests not to hold exams on Saturdays because some groups said they can't use pen and paper on that day. Such things will inconvenience a large number of people. We're ready to bring changes that are justified." The Zumba Association held a Zumba flash mob protest in front of the Secretariat against the attempts to target the fitness cardio programme in the name of dressing and terming it DJ entertainment. Minister Sivankutty took part in the protest. Differences among Muslim bodies Some Muslim organizations which had stringently opposed the introduction of Zumba in schools appear to be softening their stance now even as differences of opinion have emerged among other Muslim bodies over the matter. Kerala Naduvathul Mujahideen (KNM) state president T P Abdulla Koya Madani said on Sunday the controversy was unnecessary and suggested that it was created by those who heard Zumba for the first time now. Madani said KNM did not support stoking controversy over the issue, especially at the very start of the academic year, in a way that risked communal overtones. "At the organisational level, we are sad over the moves which have taken place at the commencement of the academic year itself, making people think about it in a communal manner," he said, adding that the state govt was the one which was open to examining the matter and holding discussions if there was anything in Zumba which should be opposed. Asked whether KNM opposed introduction of Zumba in schools, Madani said KNM did not have a stand of completely opposing any new reform. "It can be examined if there is anything in it which should be opposed. Creative suggestions can be put before the govt," he said. IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty said no religious organization was against organizing physical activity in schools. "The organizations had only sought clarity on some doubts and concerns over the matter. The govt has now clarified that Zumba is not compulsory and is optional. I spoke to the education minister and he said that steps would be taken to clear the doubts," Kunhalikutty said. He said instead of providing clarifications on the points raised, it is improper to brand the organizations as extremists. EK Sunni leader Nasser Faizi Koodathayi said there was no need for opposition if there is an option to engage in exercises without mixed-gender format and by upholding one's own culture. "Our issue is when it is forcefully imposed," said Koodathayi.

Adarsh M Saji elected SFI national president, Srijan Bhattacharya general secretary
Kozhikode: Adarsh M Saji from Kerala and Srijan Bhattacharya from West Bengal were elected national president and general secretary, respectively, of the Students Federation of India (SFI) at the national conference of the organisation in Kozhikode on Sunday. Saji hails from Chathannoor, Kollam. He was previously SFI state vice president and national joint secretary. He was the general secretary of the Kerala University student's union and a member of the university's academic council. Bhattacharya, who served as national joint secretary, hails from Jadavpur, West Bengal. Holding a postgraduate degree in history, he is also a member of the CPM West Bengal state committee. He contested the Singur Assembly seat in the last state election and was the Left Front candidate from Jadavpur in the Lok Sabha elections. The meeting also elected an 87-member central executive committee. SFI has called for a strong resistance against the central govt's move to distort history and saffronise and communalise the country's education sector, and to build an alternative to the flawed National Education Policy.
